Australia versus England for the Ashes during 02-03 summer.

The number one cricket team in the world playing at home, in what looks like being a stinking hot summer, against one of the worst teams in the world (no offense to the pommy readers!!!)
Expect an absolute whitewash of the series. Poms to wilt under the intense Australian heat. Calling it at 4-0 (I figure the weather might save them once for a draw!!:D)
A lazy few units at $4.25

Pawaqatsi,

With all respect....yes the Aussies are by far the best cricket team in the world at test level. However, I think you are wrong to label England as one of the worst teams in the world. Currently on test form they are probably in the top three of world cricket, but admit are still a long way off reaching the standards od Australia.

However, I think we will surprise a few of you Aussies, and manage to grab a test or at least draw a couple. England have a very sound batting line up, but will struggle with the ball without Gough. However look out for the only Welshman :D ;) in the England team.....he is Simon Jones, a very very quick bowler who has ability and will be able to aim a few bouncers at your arrogant Aussie heads!!! :D

1837, get your house on Australia winning the Series however!!

Crooky

Your boys can't even beat our 'state' sides!!! The injury to Gough will only demoralise your boys even more and expect McGrath to dish out a few of his own "bean balls" as well.
Can't help but be arrogant!!! :D :thefinger

1837
In a word....NONE. Test by test, take the Aussies every time and you can bank on the series win and profit. LOCKED!!
We have no serious rival in world cricket at this time and we generally wrap up these 5 day games in 4 as of late !!!
These Englishmen are like lambs to the slaughter..

(points back over the bowlers (crooky) head....)

Paw, with "modesty":p you're saying you have no rivals in the world in cricket. What about taking the Aussies at 15/8 to win the Cricket world cup??? Is it a good bet if you're saying you're so strong? Should i bet the farm? :p What about South Africa at 3/1? I think these guys can give you a lesson no?:p :)

Yes the South Africans are our 'nearest' rivals world wide.
Mind you we recently went over there and spanked their sorry :moon: in a series on their own turf.

Occasionally we get beaten in the odd one day match but realistically we have no equal.

For the World Cup next year we will play it by ear for odds. Hard to get to the Final but the Semis should be a 'cert'.

Paw or Crooky, have you take a look at OLY lines for the match ups in cricket for the first test? In addition, they have some lines for South-africa and Sri Lanka game and West Indies-India.

For an ignorant  ;) like me in this sport, i was wondering if there were some good lines that would worth a wager...

thanks! :)

1837,

Have not looked at the lines, but South Africa should beat Sri Lanka assuming the game is in South Africa, while the once 'greatest team in the world' West Indies will probably struggle against India, who have the most talented batting line up in World Cricket.

Be cautious about betting on test cricket however, test matches can go on for as long as five days, with the result being only a draw. While you North Americans avoid a draw by playing OT after less than three hours, test cricket is completely different. It can be very negative at times, and factors such as weather, scoring often affects the likelyhood of there being a result or not.

If you was looking to begin an interest in cricket, then the One Day Internationals are far more exciting, where a result is normally always guaranteed. However, there is little more exciting than the Ashes (England-Australia test series), so you are in for a treat!!! ;)

Just took a look at the lines with OLY. Dont know how they compare with the lines here in the UK, but here are my thoughts :

India-West Indies

This is a One Day International as mentioned above. If any team is better than the Aussies then it is the Indians. This format of cricket suits India's batters to the ground. Should be a comfortable India victory here!!

South Africa-Sri Lanka

This game is over five days. Again Sri Lanka would be more suited to the One Day game, and they are actually realatively new to the test format. With home advantage, then South Africa are probably the bet here, although I dislike betting on test matches due to my reasoning from my previous reply.

I suspect Pawaqatsi will add his comments!! ;)

BTW 1837, I would be fairly confident that OLY will price up some rugby this weekend, as there are some big matches!!! :p

England, u.k.
I posted in the community pages that Austrialia will win 3-0, 4-0, 5-0. However, Austrialia have lost at least one game to England in recent encounters. This has been when the series has been won, ie: 3-0 up with two games to play.

-550 is a great bet. I know it's a lot of juice but if 100 games were played between these countries Austrialia with their current players would win 70 games of them with the remaining 30 games split between draws and victories to us pommies.

As prop bets the following are all worth considering;

M. Hayden 3/1 top Aussie bat in series
D. Marten 7/1 top Aussie bat in series

It goes without saying that last year Hayden scored more test runs than anyone else, over1300 runs. Opening the innings gives him more options than the middle order because the Aussies will no doubt during this series be chasing 150 runs in the second innings to win.
Marten has been promoted in the order to bat number four. At 7/1 he represents far better value than Ponting or Waugh who is still being priced on performances of 3 years ago when he was phenominal.

M. Vaughan 3/1 top English bat in series
N. Hussain 11/2 top English bat in series

Vaughan scored 900 runs last summer and is at present our best batsman. He has averaged over 60 for his last 14 at bats and started his tour with 100 runs the other day so is clearly in good form.
Hussain has scored a fifty against the Aussies at every test ground accept the MCC. He will be a prized wicket for the roo's but alot of Englands solid performances have evolved around how well Hussain has played backing up Vaughan and Trescothick.

The best bet however is

G. McGrath 11/8 top Aussie bowler in series

This man seems to have the wood over every batsman in the world. Sheer class and a joy to watch a craftsman at the top of his profession.

I know theres a strong agrument for Warne but the wickets are more conducive to quickies than spin and if Warne is not leading by 4 or 5 wickets after the first test then this bet is lost.

I'd take the Hayden over Langer 1st test match-up (and will!) with a smaller play on Ponting over Lehman.

McGrath for most series wickets overall.

Look around at whichever books you use as I have seen a fair bit of difference at my locals. All the same faves though.

No opinion on the other internationals

Bulldog

As the best cricketing nation at this time (both test and one day) Please have the decency to spell AUSTRALIA correctly !!!!
Australia.....as in World Cup Champions.

Pawaqatsi who are you calling a buffon.

A genuine mistake with the spelling and you start sledging.

I'm not dissputing that you are he best test cricket playing nation, but to say you are the best at one day cricket at present is not accurate. Stop living in the past we know the green caps are world champs. If the world cup was tomorrow India would win in a canter. Why, because they bat down to number 8 and their bowling is suited to the one day format. Australia relay to much on Gilcrist and Hayden. If they fail you struggle to make 220. Look at recent performances especially against Sri Lanka, out played, outclassed. Enough said.
