these excerpts from R. McKeon of "SF Chronicle":

the Avalanche won the opener of the West Finals last year just three days after eliminating Los Angeles in seven games.

"They're an experienced team, they're the defending champs," Ricci said. "They've been through this kind of adversity before. They're going to be ready,

so we have to be ready also." .......

The Sharks and Avs meet in the postseason for the second time in four years.

The two teams met in the first round in 1999, Sutter's second year behind San Jose's bench. Colorado won the bizarre series in six games.

The Columbine High School shooting massacre took place in nearby Littleton, Colo., on the eve of the scheduled start of the series in Denver. In light of the tragedy, the series was delayed and began with Games 1 and 2 in San Jose.

Colorado won both games, but dropped Games 3 and 4 when the series shifted to Denver. The Avalanche won Game 5 -- the only victory by the home team -- and wrapped up the series with a 3-2 overtime triumph in San Jose two days later.

The two teams split this season's series, each winning twice on road ice. The series broke down like this:

DEC. 14: Sharks 3, Colorado 0 -- In Denver, Evgeni Nabokov set a franchise record with his 11th career shutout. Marco Sturm, Ricci and Thornton scored to support Nabokov's 38 saves.

JAN. 15: Sharks 1, Colorado 0 -- In Denver, Nabokov stopped 38 shots again to record his third shutout in four games the Avs have hosted against the Sharks all-time. Teemu Selanne scored with just less than three seconds left in overtime.

JAN. 19: Colorado 3, Sharks 1 -- In San Jose, Radim Vrbata, Chris Drury and Martin Skoula scored goals while Patrick Roy turned away 22 of 23 shots. Patrick Marleau scored San Jose's lone goal.

MARCH 28: Colorado 3, Sharks 2 -- In San Jose, Drury and Eric Messier scored third-period goals as the Sharks surrendered a one-goal lead after 40 minutes. Roy stopped 30 of 32 shots. Ricci and Thornton scored second-period goals.

"I think it's very evenly matched," center Vincent Damphousse said. "Obviously they get (Peter) Forsberg back, who we haven't seen all year. It's a challenge for us."

Terry Frei of Denver Post predicts a Sharkie win in six sez here..............................http://www.denverpost.com/Stories/0,1413,36%7E104%7E583062%7E,00.html

"Avs Wary, not Weary" claim headline in Rocky Mountain News. this excerpt:

"It was a physical series for them against L.A.," Sharks forward Scott Thornton told the San Francisco Chronicle. "Those guys are a little banged up. In that sense, yeah, it's a good situation for us."

The Avalanche doesn't view it this way. The Avalanche's 4-0 series-clinching victory Monday was easily its best all-around performance of the playoffs, and the team is expected to have a completely healthy lineup for the second game in a row -- and for the second time this season.

Monday was the first time that forwards Peter Forsberg and Milan Hejduk were in the lineup at the same time since Game 7 of last year's second-round series against the Kings.

"It makes a huge difference having those guys," Drury said. "It makes us much deeper. It gives us a lot of firepower up front. It gives us two great players who have been in these situations before."

M Purdy of SJ Mercury News sez rest is best:

"there's the matter of goalie Patrick Roy, whose two middle names are ``Lord'' and ``Stanley.'' Roy's career record against the Sharks is 21-6-4.

I know what you're thinking. How, then, could the Sharks win in six games? Easy. Because they know they can. And they have a golden opportunity tonight in Game 1, an opportunity they need to seize. In the 96 hours the Sharks have had to rest since ousting Phoenix, Colorado has played two games.

No matter what the Avalanche players say, they cannot possibly be as fresh and ready to hit as the Sharks will be tonight. This is a chance for our beloved Los Tiburones to get a jump and bank a victory."

Victor Chi of SJ Mercury News has this bit:

"The Kings tightened up their schemes after track-meet hockey in the first two games left them scorched, a lesson to be learned for the Sharks.

``It became a more physical series,'' Sutter said. ``But by then you're down 2-0 to the Stanley Cup champions.''

Which is why Ragnarsson's badgering and battering of Forsberg is only one crucial element. Marleau has earned kudos because of his scoring down the stretch and into the playoffs, but a key factor in his surge was upgraded physical play on defense.

With potential center matchups against Sakic, Forsberg and Chris Drury, Marleau stressed the need to show up on both sides of the puck.

``We're going to have to be really tight on defense as a team -- and that includes all the forwards -- if we were going to be able to shut those guys down,'' Marleau said."........

"Forsberg, of course, is the X-factor for the Avalanche. After missing the regular season because of various injuries, the most prominent of which was ligament damage in his foot, Forsberg -- whom many consider the world's most complete forward -- supplied Colorado with a caffeine-like infusion with his return.

But the Avalanche defeated the Kings even though Forsberg and Joe Sakic cooled considerably as the series progressed. Sakic had three goals and an assist in the first two games, but he was a no-show on the scoresheet in the final five games.

This mirrored the Sharks' success in their five-game disposal of Phoenix in the first round. Neither Owen Nolan nor Teemu Selanne scored a goal."

D. Pollak of Mercury News reports Sharks working on PP:

"Colorado was the least-penalized team in the first round of the playoffs. And if the Sharks are going to be successful this series, Coach Darryl Sutter said Tuesday, they need to follow that example.

``Both teams are outstanding five-on-five, and that's where they want to stay,'' Sutter said.

The Avalanche averaged 7.4 penalty minutes per game in their series with Los Angeles; the Sharks averaged 12.8 against Phoenix -- more than all but two of the eight teams still playing hockey.

Sutter devoted much of Tuesday morning's skate to the power play. He mixed his defensive pairings on the top unit, putting Mike Rathje with Jillson and Gary Suter at different times. The most difficult personnel decision Sutter has faced in the playoffs is whether to use Jillson in spot duty as a seventh defenseman or scratch him from the lineup so he can have four complete offensive lines."

this bit from McKeon in SF Chronicle:

"Roy is the league's all-time winningest goalie in the regular season (516), the all-time winningest goalie in the postseason (141) and has the most shutouts (21, thanks to two more against L.A.) in the playoffs.

Tonight, however, he faces a team that can score, and he'll oppose Evgeni Nabokov, who has yet to allow a goal after 125 minutes and 76 shots in Denver this season. "
