Jobless rate drops to lowest level in almost three years

The U.S. economy created jobs at the fastest pace in nine months in January and the unemployment rate dropped to a near three-year low, offering a hopeful sign for hiring in the year ahead.:0074

Employers added a net 243,000 jobs last month, the Labor Department reported Friday -- that's the most since April and far better than economists' expectations for a gain of only 150,000.

?It?s a strong number, a very strong number, I would say,? said Vassili Serebriakov, a currency strategist at Wells Fargo Bank. ?It?s consistent with the broad improvement in the U.S. economic data, but I think the extent of strength in today's report is somewhat of a surprise, and this is a good sign for the U.S. employment market and the U.S. economy.?

The nation?s unemployment rate fell to 8.3 percent in January from 8.5 percent in the prior month. The rate has dropped 0.8 percentage point since August and is now at its lowest level in nearly three years, having fallen for five consecutive months -- the first time that has happened since late 1994.

The decline in the jobless rate reflected large gains in employment in the separate household survey from which the jobless rate is derived. Job gains were widespread, with even the transportation and warehousing sector increasing payrolls.

The jobless rate is calculated based on a government survey. A separate survey calculates how many payroll jobs are added. Neither survey takes into consideration how many people are collecting unemployment benefits.

January saw the most jobs added since and April and May 2010, when 277,000 and 458,000 jobs were created. But those months were skewed by massive hiring for the census. Before that, the last month with more job creation was March 2006.

The upbeat tenor of the January jobs report was further strengthened by revisions to November and December payrolls data, which showed 60,000 more jobs created than previously reported. In addition, hiring was widespread across many high-paying industries. And average hourly earnings rose four cents, which should help to support spending.

The report also suggested that expectations of a slowdown in U.S. economic growth in the first quarter were not yet having an impact on companies' hiring decisions.

Vote: Do you think the economy has turned the corner?

The continued labor market improvement could be a relief for President Barack Obama who faces a tough re-election campaign this year.

Speaking at an event in Arlington, Va., Friday, Obama welcomed the strong January jobs report. But, he added, there are ?still far too many Americans who need a job.?

?The economy is growing stronger. The recovery is speeding up. And we have to do everything in our power to keep it going,? Obama said.

Obama also called on Congress to pass a payroll tax extension and avoid sabotaging the recovery.

?Now is not the time for self-inflicted wounds to our economy,? he said, describing his message to Congress as: ?Do not slow down the recovery that we?re on. Don?t muck it up.?

Economic data this week have certainly pointed to an improving economy.

Manufacturing grew at its fastest pace in seven months in January, and fewer Americans sought unemployment benefits last week, showing companies are cutting fewer jobs. Also, retail sales increases last month, carmakers started the year with strong January sales and the U.S. economy expanded at a 2.8 percent annual pace in the final four months of last year. That was one percentage point higher than in the previous quarter.

This is not good for the GOP

Mittster comes out and states that Obama has nothing to do with the economy getting better

and Obama had nothing to do with two bullets to
Osama Bin Ladens brainbob.:142smilie

The Newster is planning some really bad campaign ads . He will knock the Mittster off that high horse.

It really would be better for Newt to win the nomination.

Judge: Obama eligible to be Georgia candidate
ShareThisPrint E-mail By Bill Rankin

President Barack Obama?s name will remain on the Georgia primary ballot after a state law judge flatly rejected legal challenges that contend he can not be a candidate.

Enlarge photo Susan Walsh, AP A Georgia judge rejected a "birther" challenge that claimed President Barack Obama was ineligible for the Georgia ballot.

In a 10-page order, Judge Michael Malihi dismissed one challenge that contended Obama has a computer-generated Hawaiian birth certificate, a fraudulent Social Security number and invalid U.S. identification papers. He also turned back another that claimed the president is ineligible to be a candidate because his father was not a U.S. citizen at the time of Obama's birth.

The findings by Malihi, a judge for the State Office of Administrative Hearings, go to Secretary of State Brian Kemp, who will make the final determination. Last month, at a hearing boycotted by Obama's lawyer, Malihi considered complaints brought by members of the so-called "birther" movement.

With regard to the challenge that Obama does not have legitimate birth and identification papers, Malihi said he found the evidence "unsatisfactory" and "insufficient to support plaintiffs' allegations."

A number of the witnesses who testified about the alleged fraud were never qualified as experts in birth records, forged documents and document manipulation and "none ... provided persuasive testimony," Malihi wrote.

Addressing the other claim that contends Obama cannot be a candidate because his father was never a U.S. citizen, Malihi said he was persuaded by a 2009 ruling by the Indiana Court of Appeals decision that struck down a similar challenge. In that ruling, the Indiana court found that children born within the U.S. are natural-born citizens, regardless of the citizenry of their parents.

Obama "became a citizen at birth and is a natural-born citizen," Malihi wrote. Accordingly, Obama is eligible as a candidate for the upcoming presidential primary in March, the judge said.

Even though Malihi ruled in Obama's favor, he expressed displeasure that the president's lawyer, Michael Jablonski of Atlanta, refused to attend the recent hearing.

"By deciding this matter on the merits, the court in no way condones the conduct or legal scholarship of defendant's attorney, Mr. Jablonski," Malihi wrote. "This decision is entirely based on the law, as well as the evidence and legal arguments presented at the hearing."

That loud noise you heard Friday morning? Cheers from the White House and President Barack Obama's campaign headquarters in Chicago.

Employers created 243,000 jobs in January, according to Friday's Labor Department report. The unemployment rate dropped from 8.5% to 8.3% -- the lowest level since February 2009. Unemployment has now dropped for five months in a row.

The news was far better than most economists expected. Politically, it's gold for an incumbent running in a year when the economy is by far the top concern.

"There are still far too many Americans who need a job ... (but) the economy is growing stronger. The recovery is speeding up," Obama told a crowd in Virginia after the news broke. "I want to send a clear message to Congress. Do not slow the recovery we are on. Don't muck it up. Keep it moving in the right direction."

Alan Kreuger, head of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, said the "employment report provides further evidence that the economy is continuing to heal from the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression."

He added that it "is critical that we continue the economic policies that are helping us to dig our way out of the deep hole that was caused by the recession that began at the end of 2007."

Translation: We're cleaning up George W. Bush's mess. Give us a second term to finish the job.

If you want to follow the other lemmings and continue to believe that the current system works for our coutry, there is nothing anyone can say or write to convince you otherwise.

The majority of people in these threads are locked into backing either the current failed presidency or the past failed presidency...wake up...they were both failures not to mention the Congress that has performed at an even more pathetic level.

You don't think the two parties want Americans spending all of their time blaming each other? Meanwhile, people are locked into selecting a leader from one of the same two cesspools of candidates.

Carry-on my friends and have lots of kids because maybe the next generation will come to a realization that rather than wasting time with the drivel posted above, they have the power to actually change the way things are.

you guys ought to worry more about the country than about me...see the title of this thread.

I've always supported Paul (or the Libertarian).

I choose not to waste my time trying to make points or figuring out who is making more progress as we all swim in this river of sh*t.

Guess what, azbob? Nobody is worried about you; you're just comic relief with your denial of facts, and your preprogrammed Republican spew.

-- like the saying in germany

First they came for the jews i said nothing because I was not a jew

Then they came for the christains and I said nothing because I was not a christain

Then they came for me, and there was no one to say anything, so now I am dreaming.
