I'm getting conflicting info on who will start this game if they play. I like the Cards, but would like them much more if Benes pitches. Does any one have any info? Thanks for your respones.

St. Louis Post Dispatch says Wright to pitch

From todays' St. Louis Post Dispatch

Cards acquire Wright from the Brewers

By Joe Strauss
Of The Post-Dispatch

Wright had been scheduled to pitch tonight's Brewers game against the Cincinnati Reds. Instead, he will join the Cardinals in Chicago and, barring a strike, start today vs. the Cubs. That start will, in turn, make Luther Hackman and Andy Benes starters for Saturday's doubleheader.

CINCINNATI - Moving to bolster their rotation even as the game approached shutdown, the Cardinals on Thursday acquired righthanded starting pitcher Jamey Wright and cash from the Milwaukee Brewers for minor-league outfielder Chris Morris and a player to be named.

The trade - the Cards' fourth since July 19 - addresses the team's need for starting pitching.

The trade also provides protection should ace Matt Morris require more than 15 days to recover from a strained hamstring or if either Woody Williams or Garrett Stephenson falters following returns from the disabled list.

Wright, 27, was 5-13 with a 5.35 ERA for the Brewers this season.

A pending free agent making $4.25 million this season, Wright is 2-3 with a 2.62 ERA in his last five starts. Wright has pitched 114 1/3 innings in 19 starts. He has allowed 15 home runs and has been vulnerable to big innings.

A former first-round pick of the Colorado Rockies, Wright possesses a five-pitch assortment, which includes an outstanding sinker. He was 11-12 with a 4.90 ERA for the Brewers last season. This season's numbers were partly inflated early by shoulder tendinitis that forced him to the disabled list.

Wright underwent arthroscopic surgery for removal of bone chips from his elbow last winter. He also has a history of shoulder problems but has remained sound the past several months.

Morris, 23, is a switch-hitter who batted .249 with 38 runs batted in and 55 stolen bases in 114 games at Class A Potomac. Last season, he led the Midwest League with 111 steals at Peoria - the second-highest stolen base total in organizational history, trailing Vince Coleman's 145 with Macon in 1983.

The Cards will likely create roster room for Wright by optioning Nerio Rodriguez to Memphis. During a recent flurry of roster moves, minor-league reliever Doug Nickle was lost on waivers to the Padres, reliever Kevin Joseph was designated for assignment and reliever Gabe Molina was optioned to Memphis.
