he started one game this season and won. May 9, at TX. Here is recap from ticker:

Texas 4, White Sox 1

ARLINGTON, TEXAS (TICKER) -- Joaquin Benoit filled in just fine for
the Texas Rangers.

Benoit pitched six strong innings in an emergency start and Hector
Ortiz and Frank Catalanotto homered to give the Rangers a 4-1
victory over the Chicago White White Sox and a split of the
four-game series.

Ismael Valdes was scratched from his scheduled start on Thursday due to stiffness in his lower
back. Benoit, a 24-year-old righthander, was recalled from Oklahoma of the Pacific Coast
League and made the most of the opportunity, allowing just one run and four hits with three
walks and three strikeouts.

"He got outs when he needed to. Anytime a pitcher comes up from Triple A and gets a win, it's
tremendous," Texas manager Jerry Narron said. "The pitching set up perfect for us today."

It was the second major league appearance for Benoit, who made a spot start for the Rangers
last August. The native of the Dominican Republic allowed his only run in the second inning on
an RBI single by Mark Johnson and retired the last 10 batters he faced.

John Rocker and Rudy Seanez each pitched a scoreless inning and Hideki Irabu worked the
ninth for his eighth save as the final 19 White Sox batters went down in order.

"That young man (Benoit) pitched well and they had good relief pitching," White Sox manager
Jerry Manuel said. "They had our number."

Benoit was in Oklahoma City when he received the call from the Rangers at 11 p.m. on
Wednesday night. He was at the airport at 5 a.m. and arrived at the park about 3 1/2 hours
before game time.

"It means a lot to me and my family back home. I got to help the team," Benoit said. "I'm going
to go check into my hotel room room and sleep."........

from AP recap:

....Benoit (1-0), who got less than three hours sleep after being called up from Triple-A Oklahoma,
allowed one run and four hits over six innings with three strikeouts and three walks. He retired
the last 10 batters he faced, but left after 105 pitches.

After Magglio Ordonez had a two-out single in the third, the last 19 Chicago hitters were retired.
John Rocker, Rudy Seanez and Hideki Irabu, who got his eighth save in nine chances, pitched
perfect innings.

Benoit was called up from Triple-A Oklahoma after Ismael Valdes was scratched because of
stiffness in his back.

Instead of pitching for the RedHawks, the 22-year-old right-hander spent most of the night
getting to Texas for his second major league start.

``In the first couple of innings, I was trying to do too much, but those last three innings, I was
getting my energy back,'' Benoit said. ``As the game went on, I got more consistent in my
pitches.''

Konerko said Benoit was effectively wild.

``You didn't know exactly what you were going to get,'' Konerko said.....

this is from www.topprospectalert.com:

Joaquin Benoit, P
DOB: 7/26/79, Age: 22, Bats/Throws: R/R, Height: 6-4, Weight: 205
Acquired: Rangers - Signed out of Dominican Republic, 5/96
2000 Stats: (AA - Tulsa) 4-4, 3.83 ERA, 82 IP, 73 H, 30 BB, 72 SO
Like Cedeno, Benoit has the reputation for being injury-prone, however he has enjoyed a healthy and production season in 2001. He started the season at AA Tulsa and after 4 starts was promoted to AAA Oklahoma. In 23 starts at Oklahoma, he's 8-5 with a 4.50 ERA, 122 IP, 110 H, 71 BB, and 130 SO. Strong numbers for a just-turned 22 year-old in the offense-oriented Pacific Coast League. His high walk total is a reflection of his need to refine his command. The Rangers, in their desperation for pitching, rushed him to the majors. He made only 1 start and was sent back down to AAA. Benoit throws in the low 90's with his fastball to go along with a real good slider. His change-up needs work. I think Benoit has the potential to be a top half of the rotation guy, but it will depend on his health and how well he develops his command.

I just played the Ragers +110 for a unit...I think that pitcher will get it done. The bullpen hasnt blown any leads since the Astros game...plus they are swinging the bat well with Pudge back...so Ithink there is very good value to this...Angels 4th series on the road...I like it alot
