Sportsbetting cappers will get to see a tantalizing NHL matchup on Wednesday night before the NHL pauses for it's Christmas break.

The Southeast Division-leading Washington Capitals will take on the
Northeast Division-leading Buffalo Sabres in a matchup of two first place
teams.

Internet betting cappers were projecting the Capitals to be in first in the
Southeast, especially since their competition is so weak. In a division that
features the Carolina Hurricanes, Tampa Bay Lightning, Florida Panthers and
Atlanta Thrashers, there was no question that the Capitals, who went deep
into the playoffs last year, would run this division once again.

While they were expected to be the best in their class, not many people were
expecting the Buffalo Sabres to be in first place in their division. In a
division featuring the Boston Bruins, Ottawa Senators and Montreal
Canadiens, the Sabres were not expected to be the leading horse.
Nonetheless, they are in first mostly because of the play of net minder Ryan
Miller, who has been playing out of his mind recently.

It should be an interesting matchup between one of the league's best
snipers, Alexander Ovechkin, and one of the league's best goaltenders on
Wednesday night.

Buffalo Sabres @ Washington Capitals

The Capitals will be the favorite at whichever sportsbook opens the line for Wednesdays game.

The Caps are coming off a win against the Edmonton Oilers, which featured
two uninspiring periods by the Capitals and one stellar one. The Caps were
trailing 2-0 heading into the third but Ovechkin put on a clinic with two
goals and an assist en route to the win.

The Capitals are 10-2-3 at home while the Sabres are just 10-5-0 on the
road, so home ice advantage should be in the Caps favor.

Starting fast will be more important to the Sabres than it will be the Caps.
The Sabres are just 2-10 when trailing after two periods whereas the
Capitals are more adept to coming from behind.

The Sabres have a few nagging injuries that could also hamper them. 40-goal
scorer Thomas Vanek is day-to-day with an abdomen bruise and he hasn't been
able to skate as fluidly as usual. The Sabres could really use their best
finisher against the Capitals, who are one of the highest-scoring teams in
the league..
