Betting the Super Bowl 'Over' and 'Under'

When the Super Bowl rolls around there is plenty of talk about the point spread and all the outrageous Super Bowl props out there as well. With so many different props and Super Bowl Block Pools, the total often gets overlooked.

When betting the Super Bowl ?over/under? there are plenty of things to take into account. The game presents many scenarios that are rare to the NFL.

Along with being the biggest game most players will ever be involved in, the game is also on a neutral site, a very rare occasion for the NFL, there is a 13-day layoff between the championship games and the Super Bowl and players have to deal with extended television timeouts and an extended halftime.

Nerves will likely be an issue for New Orleans, who has never been to a Super Bowl before. A good portion of the Indianapolis Colts? roster remains from the Colts? previous Super Bowl in 2007. Although the Saints have not been to the big game before, they just played in two huge ones and their offense put up points in droves, to the tune of 76 in two playoff games.
In terms of the total, the venue is also key. This is the first Super Bowl to pit two dome teams against each other and it just happens to be outdoors. The last time the Super Bowl was in Miami, the weather played a major factor with constant rains helping keep the field slick and the total ?under?.

One of the first things Peyton Manning said when looking ahead to the Super Bowl while being interviewed in the immediate aftermath of the Colts? AFC championship win was ?I hope it doesn?t rain this year.?

Although it is a neutral venue, both the Colts and the Saints are familiar with the field. Both played in the stadium this season and both games went over with the Colts scoring 27 and the Saints piling up 46 points.

Simply playing outdoors will be a change of pace for both teams. Last time New Orleans played in a meaningful game outside of a dome it was Dec. 6 and for the Colts it was Dec. 17. The ?over? has hit four of six times in the Colts? outdoors games and in the Saints? six outdoors games the ?over? and ?under? each hit three times.

The extended layoff could end up being the biggest factor here. Both offenses have benefited, the Saints especially, from longer than usual layoffs. In Week 1, the Saints scored 45 points, after their bye week the Saints scored 48 points and after a first-round bye in the playoffs the Saints scored 45 again. The Colts scored 42 points the week after their bye and they scored 20 points in their first playoff game after the bye.

Looking at the Super Bowl itself, things have been as even as possible. Both the ?over? and the ?under? have hit 21 times each (there was no total for Super Bowl I). Before the Steelers defeated the Cardinals, 27-23, last year to go ?over? the posted total of 46, the ?under? had hit four consecutive Super Bowls. The number itself is interesting as well. Currently the Super Bowl ?over/under? is 56.5, having risen from the opening line of 55. It is the highest total in the history of the Super Bowl.

There have been seven previous Super Bowls with a total of 50 or more and the ?under? has hit four of the seven times.
