Howard Dean considering bid to chair Democratic Party

Monday November 08, 2004

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) Former presidential candidate Howard Dean is considering a bid to become chairman of the national Democratic Party.

Steve Grossman, himself a former chairman of the Democratic National Committee, said Dean had told him he was thinking about it.

Dean was traveling today in New York and unavailable for comment. His spokeswoman, Laura Gross, said ``it was far too early to be speculating on that.''

The 240 members of the Democratic National Convention will elect a new chair early next year. Several names are already being mentioned, including former Clinton aide Harold Ickes; Donna Brazile, who ran Al Gore's presidential campaign, and Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack.

Dean has been outspoken since the beginning of his presidential bid in saying that the Democratic Party must establish a separate and unique identity from Republicans.

The next chairman will replace Terry McAuliffe, whose term is ending.

It will be nice to see McAuliffe gone. He clearly did not know how to fight. As for Dean I do not think it would be a bad idea. Especially if this Iraq Diversion keeps going as it is. He can say he was against it. I am surprised no one is on Bush for announcing this attack weeks before it started giving whatever terrorist wanted to leave a chance. Maybe the election had something to do with it? We will never know because McAuliffe never raised the questions loud enough.

He may be right. We need a party that sounds different then the two we got. It's just same -o from both. Like Bush with S/S going more private. Good luck they may need 1 trillion to get it done right. They don't have any place to dig that cash up.

stevie,

long time no talk to.....hope things are well.

i happen to agree with you that it makes no sense that they have been announcing this raid in fallujah(sp?) for weeks. it seems very counter productive.

and i'm sure that it was held off until the election was over for 2 reasons.....

kerry may not have approved of this attack if he won.

and the way the political climate is in this country that during a presidential election, the opposing party that wasn't in office (in this case the dems) would criticize any move that was done in iraq. and that wouldn't look good that this country couldn't be united during this important fight.

and with all respect towards you....but if you feel that it may be good for the dems if dean got the job as head of the dem. party, then i'm afraid that you didn't learn anything about this election. the dem. party, post 9/11 will never get anybody in the white house in our life time if they continue to voice liberal ideas. the dems have to get a few of the red states in order to win.it will never happen with a liberal candidate.

without moving towards the center, the dems will continue losing governors, senators, & congressmen. it has been happening for years now & the democrats refuse to change.

an example of this was in the 2002 election where it was the first time that the incumbent party that held the presidency didn't lose seats in congress. instead the republicans gained seats.

the dem. party have to move moderates like lieberman, & bayh front & center, not push them into the background.

and as far as mccauliffe is concerned.... he is a puppet of bill clinton, who pushed him for this job. and from the beginning kerry & mccauliffe didn't hit it off....because kerry knew that mccauliffe was a clinton man & didn't have kerry's best interest in mind.... and we know that clinton is dreaming of the day that hillary runs for office. and that would have been more difficult with a kerry/edwards victory.

Might see McAuliffe in 08 if Hilliary runs--since they are so tight. I can just see his stratagy now--he will send Slick out on campaign trail in effort to garner the value/character/morale--voters :)

AR things have been better thanks for asking. I hope things are good with you too.
I do not feel that this was lopsided vote. In fact, for much of the day Bush himself thought he lost. Also, if you look at the exit polls a lot of Kerry votes seemed to have disappeared.
Do not forget The Right had there own top rated television network and a radio empire and a ton of newspapers.
That should even out a bit in the next 8 years as the powers that be realize that at least 49% of the voters voted against Bush and a buck can be made doing the opposite of Fox..
I do not think that McAullife brought anything to the plate. He was slow to respond to the Swift Boat Ads and in my opinion never did address them properly. I am glad to see him go.

Just back from 3 days at parents--

"I do not think that McAullife brought anything to the plate. He was slow to respond to the Swift Boat Ads and in my opinion never did address them properly"

Thats the $64,000 question--how do you responde to Swiftboats other then using generic phrase "they were proven wrong" when they could show particular instances that they were in fact proven wrong---and if you think releasing his records wouldn't have done more harm than good do you really think he would not have had them up on his website in 2 seconds flat, Give me one reason why they wouldn't have despite the obvious???? How many unequivical proven lies and contadictions on his military did I put hear since beginning of campaign??????????
