The Wolf Pack is heading south this week for the Mountain West Conference basketball tournament, but Northern Nevada hoops fans can still get their fix as the Big Sky Conference tournament begins Monday at the Reno Events Center.

Some of the top men?s players in the Big Sky to watch for include, Quinton Hooker from North Dakota, Jeremy Senglin from Weber State and Jacob Wiley from Eastern Washington.

North Dakota earned its first Big Sky regular-season championship and is the No. 1 seed for the conference tournament.

The men?s tournament begins Tuesday as No. 8 Portland State and No. 9 Northern Arizona tip at 2:35 p.m.; No. 7 Sacramento State and No. 10 Idaho State play at 5:35 p.m. Tuesday; and No. 6 Montana State plays No. 11 Southern Utah at 8:05 p.m.

A few players and coaches with ties to Nevada, almost all Las Vegas, will be participating in the Big Sky Conference tournament.

Most notable is Douglas graduate James Herrick, a junior center at Sacramento State. Herrick (6-foot-10, 254 pounds). He has played very limited minutes for the Hornets though, appearing in eight games this season.

One of his Sac State teammates, Grant Dresser, is from Las Vegas (Palo Verde).

But Sacramento State is coming off a 57-53 upset win over North Dakota.

More players with Nevada connections include Travis Rice, the son of Nevada assistant basketball coach Dave Rice. He is a 6-foot-2, 175-pound freshman on the Northern Arizona men?s basketball team, but has not played this season.

Rice played for state champion Bishop Gorman last season. Northern Arizona also has Las Vegas native Jordyn Martin, senior. And the Lumberjacks? coach is Jack Murphy, who is also from Las Vegas and went to Durango High School.

Also from Las Vegas, Sir Washington is a senior on the Eastern Washington team. He played at Clark in Las Vegas.

Idaho sophomore Nick Blair, sophomore, played at Gorman. And, Idaho assistant coach, Zac Claus, was an assistant at Nevada for a decade up until last season.

Matthew Johnson from Las Vegas (Coronado) is a sophomore on the Southern Utah team.

Northern Colorado has two players from Las Vegas, Jordan Davis, sophomore, and Gerad Davis, junior, although the Bears are not participating in the Big Sky tournament, due to a self-imposed ban.

The men?s championship is at 5:30 p.m. Saturday with the winner earning the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Weber State won the men?s Big Sky tournament last year, beating Montana, 62-59, in the final.

Bobcat men start tourney play against T-Birds

The Montana State Bobcats are looking to start a new winning streak Tuesday night in the first round of the Big Sky Conference men?s basketball tournament.

The Bobcats of third-year coach Brian Fish, who had their five-game winning streak snapped Saturday night in a 76-67 loss to Weber State, are seeded sixth in the tournament and take on 11th-seeded Southern Utah Tuesday night at 9 (FM-102.7) in a first-round game.

The winner advances to meet third-seeded Weber State Thursday night at 9.

The Bobcats, 16-15 overall and 11-7 in Big Sky play, won 83-78 at Southern Utah on Feb. 11. It was the lone meeting between the teams this winter. Southern Utah (5-26, 3-15) has lost four in a row and 15 of its last 16.

The Thunderbirds are led by junior forward Randy Onwuasor, who along with Montana State star Tyler Hall averages 22.7 points per game. Onwuasor, a second-team all-Big Sky Conference selection, also averages 6.6 rebounds per game.

Hall was a unanimous first-team all-Big Sky choice and teams with freshman point guard Harald Frey, who made the all-Big Sky third team, to provide Montana State with a dynamic backcourt. Frey, who averages 12.5 points and 3.3 assists, had 19 points against Southern Utah in Cedar City. Hall poured in 23 against the T-Birds.

Montana State?s team also features Quinton Everett (10 ppg) and Zach Green (9.7 ppg). The Cats average 79.7 points and allow 78.6.

The Bobcats won nine of their last 12 games this season. The Bobcats are 15-27 all-time in the Big Sky tournament and own two championships (1986, 1996). Montana State?s last victory in the league tournament came in 2009, when a team coached by Brad Huse upset both Montana and Weber State en route to a championship game loss to Portland State.
