For the old-timers of the Shoe and Arcaro generation.
On Monday evening, Hartack was found dead in a cabin at a camp near the town of Freer,
in southern Texas, where he journeys each winter to hunt. Hartack?s remains have been
taken to a coroner, and the cause of his death has yet to be determined,
but it is suspected he died of a heart attack, according to the trainer Mike Stidham.
Sorry to hear about Bill (Dont call me Willie) Hartack. He was a great and honest jock.
One fall day at Garden he was riding a horse for a big outfit (Calumet I think) named
Mail Bag and was a 1 to 5 shot. After he warmed the horse up he returned to the saddling
area and refused to ride the horse due to soreness. Another rider was put up and the horse
ran dead last. He said he did not want people to bet on a horse that would have no chance.
He earned alot of respect from alot of fans and detractors (he had many) that day.
