Get rid of the guy
Typical commentary by Walton
Player X is a lazy lazy player--he has no business being out on the court
(Player X makes a basket)
Ohhhhhh and Player X is taking over the game and putting on a show--pure domination!!!!1

i think he is hilarious -i do not think he is supposed to be taKEN SERIOUSLY he took a little to much acid in his day. a guy who is trying to be so smart who says nothing -something about it i find entertaining but i liked dennis miller also. walton kind of reminds me of howard cosell talks alot but does not say much and comes up with some off the wall stuff

I agree Walton sucks. Get rid of him. Replace him permanently with Barkley if you want an ex-player announcer. At least he is entertaining and sticks to his opinions. Walton likes to be a little too dramatic with his words.

So Cal
Say, High Roller, what do you think about your Walton comment now? You still want to slam Walton? Or are you willling to give the "idiot" a little credit for noticing something just a little bit before any of the rest of us? I realize that Walton can really get on your nerves - but he is far from an "idiot" and it looks like he made some others look like the idiots here.

So Cal
me bad. But to call Walton an "idiot" simply because you don't like his style is hardly a class act. Walton can be very irritating, grating, annoying, etc., etc. - but how does that make him an "idiot"? A "schmuck" perhaps, but not an idiot. Now, Barkley, that could be a whole other story. Why can people accept the fact that Barkley can say patently outrageous and ridiculous statements, yet not complain about him? Barkley, in fact, is much like Walton. Half of what he says is for effect - he doesn't mean it and doesn't believe it. But he is seemingly immune from criticism. Maybe I get the benefit of hearing Walton on the Clipper games all year and have learned to appreciate his offbeat sense of humor. Or maybe I am the idiot!

I personally like Walton as a commentator, because of all the crack, ridiculous, and random statements he makes. For example, yesterday after a bad Lindsey Hunter shot, he said:

"Lindsey Hunter makes Devean George look like John Stockton."

He said this after Lindsey Hunter fired up some pathetic and ill-advised jumpers, several minutes after Devean George had done pretty much the same thing. That's a pretty ridiculous statement to make by Walton, but it definitely got a laugh out of me.

I also think Van Gundy is a pretty good NBC commentator. I also like Danny Ainge for TNT/TBS. That guy knows his stuff pretty well too, and doesn't come off as brash as the other commentators.

personally

personally

walton and barkey are prob my two fave players of all time ... (toss in clyde, rodman, ABA Doc J) ...

anyhow, ferdville has a great point, Barkley does make as many, if not more, ridic statements but no one calls him on those cuz of PC issues ...

Walton knows the game, and played it better than any big man I have ever watched ... John Wooden called him his smartest, best player ever several times in roundabout ways (and the wiz was loathe to ever rate his guys)

Bill, makes wild statements for FX, but if you really listen, most of the time there is kernel of complete truth in there somewhere ... he just has seeds to say what other cookie cutter expensive suits dare not ...

and i also aree with Thunder, Dennis Miller is hilarious, and knew the game as well as avg. beer gut sitting at home in Lay-Z-Boy ....

to me, the bottom line is: dont you guys feel you know the game well enuff after 25 years (10-50 whatever years) of watching sports not to need talking heads explain it to you? Why do you even really care what they say, do they really educate you?

The guy who was prob the worst of all-time was Bill Russell; after hearing him 3Xs, he NEVER told me anything new ...

and the anguish of suffering thru Danny Ainge/John Thompson swapping handjobs: DA: "Coach, I dont think they are playing tuff enough perimeter defense." JT: "Danny, I completely agree with you."

Im just glad we dont have to pay to hear any of them ...

OK, just my 2 cents on M-Day ;)

Dial 'em Out

Dial 'em Out

Couldn't agree more with the concept of tuning them out when they bug you.The mute button became my best friend starting in the Brent Musberger heyday on CBS.Bill Russell explained almost everything with the rhythm method,as in "the Lakers need to get in a good offensive rhythm" or "the '76ers need to regain their defensive rhythm."No doubt a bright man,but a very poor announcer.Curiously, though Walton was the undisputed leader on the court of the Ulca teams he starred for,Wooden did not describe him as a leader amongst his teamates in thinking regarding non basketball topics,at least as a collegian. That really doesn't surprise me though as I really think far too much time is spent listening to what athletes think they have to say.The Reggie White stereotyping fiasco at the Wisconsin legislature (asked to comment on his then recent trip to Israel) underlined that point for me.

Dimedaddy

You are not obligated to read this thread as others are not obligated to post because you say so. One suggestion...Using abrasive posts to get your way will not succeed and if you don't enjoy a thread or two on topics in the NBA then I suggest you NOT ENTER THE THREAD or just move on and go to another site.

Good Luck !

Well, you finally got me. I've been reading this post ever since it came out and was not going to comment. I think everyone has a right to their view-point regardless of how I feel. If a person don't like Walton, Barkley or whoever, that's fine. Cossell made me mad everytime I watched him. But you might consider this. Bill Walton made more difference when he was on the floor than any player I can remember. The Portland championship team without him couldn't have beat a good highschool team. To prove my point, in Philly with Walton. they won by I believe 41 points. The next game in Port with Walton hurt and not playing, they lost by I believe, 40 or 41. Is there any player in history worth 80 points. These guys, Ainge, Barkley, the coachs and even Walton were all great players or coaches and if you listen very close, all of them will teach you something that might make you some money in the future. If you get caught up in your own likes and dis-likes you will miss something. Cappin 101--pay attention, it's the little things that make you the money.

oh well it will be alll over after the Finals. Hopefully ABC will have good commentary going for the NBA. We all know that Brent Mussberger will probably the A team or the 1st team as they call it. But I really really hope that they can convince Bob Costase (spelled wrong) will come to ABC/ESPN and at LEAST do the playoffs.
