Statistical Scouting Report of Buffalo

Similar to the Jets, the Bills sent some signals out through their offseason moves that they were looking more towards the future than the present. Despite that, they currently sit at 5-2, giving them the fourth best record in the AFC. Here are some numbers to know going into the Thursday Night Football matchup.

+2.0 - The average turnover margin currently sported by the Bills, best in the league by a wide margin (second place Jacksonville is at +1.2). The primary reason is a defense forcing a league-high 2.4 turnovers per game, including 3+ in each of its last four games. The offense has done its part as well. Buffalo has turned the ball over only 0.4 times per game, second best in the league behind Kansas City.

12.3 - Targets per game for Buffalo receivers, more than only the Bears. Three of Buffalo?s top four leaders in receiving yards, Charles Clay (258), LeSean McCoy (242), and Nick O?Leary (170) are not wide receivers.

-4 - The Bills? point differential in three road games this season, where they own a 1-2 record. They?ve dominated at home, going 4-0 with three two-possession victories, but have been noticeably worse outside the state of New York.

3.8 - Yards per carry this season for LeSean McCoy, a career low after setting a career high of 5.4 last year. Despite that, McCoy is still carrying as much weight as ever in his ninth season. His 25.0 touches per game is a career high.

0 - Number of teams besides Buffalo ranked in the top five of both fewest yards per rush allowed (3.5) and lowest passer rating allowed (74.5).

42 - Penalties committed by the Bills this season, tied for the second fewest in the league. These aren?t Rex Ryan?s Bills anymore.

7th - The Bills? rank in special teams DVOA entering Week 9. They?re solid across the board, ranking 12th in FG%, 10th in punt return average, 12th in kick return average, and 5th in punt return average allowed.

3 keys for Bills on defense vs. Jets

The Buffalo Bills enter Thursday?s matchup against the New York Jets on a two-game winning streak. The Bills have won consecutive games in an impressive manner since their bye week.

Buffalo and New York have already played once this season. In the opening game of the season for both teams, the Bills won comfortably 21-12. The defense allowed only allowed 38 total rushing yards to the Jets. In addition, the secondary picked off Josh McCown in the victory.

Here are three keys for Buffalo?s defense for Thursday night in order to replicate the results from Week 1.

Limit the run game

New York employs three capable runners in Matt Forte, Bilal Powell, and Elijah McGuire. This trio is capable of breaking a play or two in the game. Bilal Powell scored on a 75-yard scamper against Jacksonville, while McGuire reeled off a 69-yard run in the same game.

The Bills are third in the NFL in rushing yards allowed per game. With this in mind, the team can continue their dominance against the run. If Buffalo can continue this trend, they will force New York to put the ball in the air. This is a battle that the Bills front four and linebackers need to win.

Force Josh McCown into mistakes

Josh McCown has been efficient this year. While he has not put up massive numbers, he has been able to move the offense adequately. He has tossed 12 touchdowns on the season, and he has thrown seven interceptions. The Jets are twenty-first in the league in pass yards per game. However, they have completed 26 plays resulting in 20-plus receiving yards.

The Jets offensive line has struggled this season in pass protection, as they have already allowed 25 sacks. This would be the perfect game for the Bills? defensive line to make some progress in the pass rush. Buffalo only had one sack against McCown in Week 1 and that was on a safety blitz from Jordan Poyer. Attacking the offensive line will result in mistakes, even from a grizzled 15-year veteran.

Contain Austin Seferian-Jenkins

The 6-foot-6 tight end is the arguably New York?s best option in a weak collection of skill players. With reports of wide receiver Jermaine Kearse being suspended by the team for this upcoming game, Seferian-Jenkins will see more balls thrown his way.

The Bills have had some mixed results against opposing tight ends this year. If Buffalo can contain the imposing tight end, then they will be on their way to having a solid night. If they cannot control him or allow him to break loose, the result could be one which produces a score that is much closer than it needs to be.

Statement games for the Bills..

Have they really taken that step ...

Do you go on the road after back to back home wins scoring 30 and 34 points and take care of business against the weak sister you see twice a year .........

or are you still a weak sister ...........

maybe.......Denver win was a turnover gimme..Atl was 2nd half flat ...Cinc got ya..

and TB and Raiders aren't any good anyway..

time to show up and show off 2017 Bills....Thursday Night...just you vs only the J E T S

who truth be known...should be 1-5...and one of the loses should have been to the pathetic Browns

these two teams play tonite is submitted evidence why the New England Patriots get a cake walk to home field in the playoffs

Taylor has been sacked 5 times in the FIRST HALF..

Coach......we gotta get our QB on the move because our offensive line can't block the NY Jets

ok...

I thought that last TO for Bills, runner was down before ball came out, just what I saw..IMHO. It is what it is...just my observation, bad eyes and all!!

It's all just so subjective...

Good one. The bills defence can't stop the Jets high power offence either. Sure am glad I started the bills D in fantasy this week.

they are just now figuring out the linebacker can't cover the tight end..

problem is the tight end who has great hands doesn't know to play til you hear the whistle..

................

Big loss for Bills...

they have at least 4 more loses on their schedule ..can't score w/the Jets ya damn sure can't score w/the Pats home or away.

bye bye playoffs
