Northern NJ - around 420pm our power flickered for about 10 seconds then died completely then came back on in 10 seconds..... then happened again around 4:30pm. But we are back with power with no cell phone. NYC Totally dead .... Mayor Bloomberg was on radio saying NO terrorism involved but it was a problem at a power station near Niagra Falls and that it might take a few hours or longer before anything. ConEd turns theres off automatically because they cant handle it..... hope that helps ...

CNN reporting the outage started in Ottawa.
New York in a state of emergency.

Expect to see widespread looting. The doors of the asylum are open.

Hope everything turns out okay.

In the meantime, WNBA games in NY and Cleveland are postponed. Mets game, too, I believe.

I've watched just a little of this coverage. Here's my question, why is everybody walking around? Did the lack of electricity cause the cars to stop working? Guess I just don't understand mass transit.

Balls Deep
Half of the people who commute to NY take the trains into the city. Now that they are out, I guess people would rather be crammed like sardines on the streets rather than underground or in Grand Central Station. Also, there is most likely a ripple effect of traffic extending in all directions preventing people from even trying to get out of the city. Keep in mind that this is right smack before the end of the workday.

LMFAO!!!

I was watching a stream on MSNBC.com about an hour ago and the anchor man cut over to a reporter at a satelite location. The reporter said, "Yes we have heard a report that there has been a lightning strike at a power grid near Niagra - how would you like Howard Stern's balls on your chin?" He was quickly disconnected...

Not sure how this guy fooled everyone into thinking he was a real reporter, I'm sure Stern put him up to it. I've seen similar public stunts by the Stern crew. I guess Stern will be laughing tomorrow morning!

gardenweasel, I'm not familiar with the Jennings/Michaels incident during the OJ trial. What was that all about?

you guys are laughing?

I was stuck in complete darkness for 10 hours, and without water and electricity for 16 hours up at the cabin, not a pretty thing if you were with me...
