Why can't the kicking team recover a blocked punt if it goes past the first down marker? Why is this not the same as someone on the receiving team touching it downfield and the kicking team then recovering it?

My take on it...

Can't fumble something you don't have. They don't have possession so there can be no fumble.

Also, I'd hate to see every blocked punt be a free-for-all. If it were a fumble, then the punting team could recover behind the line and get automatic 1st down just for recovering a blocked punt. Hope that helps.

I see what you're saying, but if that were the case, why can it hit someone on the return team in the back or foot and then be a free for all downfield? Maybe the kicking team can't recover a blocked punt because the return team touched it before it crossed the line of scrimmage...I'm not sure.
