Lubbock, TX (Sports Network) - Texas Tech basketball coach Bob Knight is not expected to be with the team Tuesday night when the No. 19 Red Raiders host the Baylor Bears in a Big 12 matchup.

Knight has reportedly been suspended for five days by the university for an incident Monday involving school chancellor David Smith. A member of the media services department declined to confirm the suspension, but did say a statement would be released later on Tuesday.

Knight, who has had well-documented problems with authority figures and players in his past, was approached by Smith at a local supermarket, a witness told the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal.

What Smith said to Knight prompted the coach to become agitated, as he accused the chancellor of being a liar, saying that there had been nothing wrong with his previous demeanor.

According to the witness, Smith backed away from the confrontation, but it did no good. Knight followed him, at which point the chancellor demanded he be shown more respect.

Physical contact was not made by the men, and a manager at the supermarket downplayed the incident to the paper.

"This was not a major event as far as I'm concerned," the manager said.

The Red Raiders own a 16-4 mark, including 4-2 in the conference. Assistant coach Pat Knight is expected to take over his father's coaching duties against Baylor on Tuesday and Kansas on Saturday.

Maybe he will be coaching. Hate conflicting stories!

 :D
