New look for Purdue: Boilermakers coach debuts against UT

While he?s never met him as a head coach, Tim Beckman is 1-0 lifetime against Danny Hope.

While Beckman was an assistant at Bowling Green State University, the Falcons routed Hope?s Eastern Kentucky Colonels 63-13 in the 2003 season-opener for both teams.

Sunday the pair will meet in a completely different scenario, as Hope enters his first year as head coach at Purdue and Beckman begins his tenure as head coach at the University of Toledo.

Rookie UT coaches are 7-17 in their first game. First-time Purdue coaches are 17-16 in their debuts.

?Purdue is in a similar situation as we are with a new head coach,? Beckman said. ?But we know what they are capable of. I know what Coach Hope is all about.?

Preparing for any team with a new head coach can cause some headaches, but Beckman doesn?t expect much to change in the Boilermakers? basic offensive and defensive philosophies after the retirement of Toledo native Joe Tiller.

Hope served as Purdue?s assistant head coach under Tiller last season and his offensive line coach from 1997-2001.

Under first-year offensive coordinator Gary Nord, Purdue may be a little more balanced in its offensive attack than in years past, according to Beckman, so the Rockets must be ready for anything.

The Boilermakers welcome back a wealth of options at running back, including sophomore Ralph Bolden and fifth-year senior Jaycen Taylor, who sat out last season with a knee injury but rushed for 560 yards in 2007.

?The people that are successful now are 50-50 [run-pass],? Beckman said.
?I think they?ll try to run the football and establish the run and throw it to keep you off pace and on your heels a little bit.?

Purdue is expected to utilize fifth-year senior Joey Elliott and redshirt freshman Caleb TerBush at quarterback, but Beckman said the Rockets? are keying in on Elliott.

?I think Elliott will be the guy,? Beckman said. ?He?s a senior that has some proven leadership qualities.?

Hope and his staff have done their due diligence as well, becoming well-studied on Beckman and his assistants? tendencies after watching film from their previous coaching stops.

The Boilermakers? coaches analyzed film from Oklahoma State, where Beckman spent the last two seasons at defensive coordinator; BGSU, where Beckman served as defensive coordinator from 1998-2004 and where UT assistants Matt Campbell and Mike Ward formerly worked, and Appalachian State, where UT co-offensive coordinator Scott Satterfield served as an assistant from 1998-2008.

?We?ve looked at everybody?s tape, all the guys on their staff and the backgrounds that they have,? Hope said. ?I?m assuming [Beckman?s] going to do what he [and his assistants] have had success with in the past.

?A lot of what they do on both sides on the ball is similar to what we do,? Hope added, ?so practicing against ourselves is good training for us. If they come out and do something different, it?s probably not anything that we haven?t seen at some point in time.?

While they too have studied plenty of film, Beckman and his players are more concerned with their own efforts and performance.

?We really can?t focus on what they?re going to do,? said UT senior running back DaJuane Collins, who will see the bulk of carries in the rushing attack with sophomore Morgan Williams suspended for two games.

?We just have to focus on us, because if we come out and execute our style of offense, it?s going to force them to change their game plan.?

And when it?s all said and done, the Rockets would like to be able to hand Beckman the game ball to commemorate his first win at UT.

Said Collins: ?We want to come out and win one for him.?
