BOISE STATE CLOSES OUT NON-CONFERENCE PLAY WITH HUGE ROAD TEST AT SMU
he Boise State men?s basketball team already ended the nation?s longest home-court winning streak earlier this season at Oregon. They hope to end another long streak at SMU tonight, and put a resume-building win in their pocket in the process.
The Broncos (10-1) hit the road for the final non-conference game of the 2017 season with a huge 7 p.m. matchup against SMU at Moody Coliseum in Dallas. The game will be televised nationally by ESPNU.
SMU (8-3) has the nation?s second-longest home court winning streak at 29 straight games. Boise State won at Oregon earlier this season to end the nation?s longest-home court winning streak at 46 games.
Boise State is coming off a 85-80 double overtime win at home Wednesday against Grand Canyon. The Broncos rallied from a late deficit and forced overtime on a 3-pointer from Lexus Williams with three seconds left.
The 10-1 start ties for the best 11-game start in school history, but the Broncos would love to have a road win at SMU on the resume come Selection Sunday. SMU is ranked rank No. 27 in the Ken Pom rankings and No. 31 in ESPN?s BPI, and a road win tonight likely would do wonders for the Broncos? hopes of eventually landing in the NCAA Tournament.
A win also probably gets the Broncos close to the Top 25. They would be 11-1 with road wins over Oregon and SMU, and also would have wins against possible NCAA Tournament teams Illinois State, Loyola-Chicago and Grand Canyon.
Boise State would probably get a nice bump in the computer and advanced rankings with a win. They currently rank No. 30 in the RPI, but No. 52 in ESPN's BPI and No. 60 in the Ken Pom rankings. All three will be averaged together this year to help provide a tool for the NCAA selection committee.
Also new this year is that a road win against a top-75 RPI team will count as a 'Quadrant 1' win on team sheets for the selection committee to use when picking the field. More emphasis and weight is being put on road and neutral court wins this season, meaning a win tonight would be huge for the Broncos come March.
Shake Milton leads SMU with 18.8 points and 4.5 assists per game. He?s one of five players in double figures for the Mustangs, which rank No. 22 in the country with 18.2 assists per game.
SMU has wins over No. 2 Arizona and No. 15 USC . The Mustangs are coming off a 79-66 win against New Orleans on Wednesday.
Boise State posted a 71-62 win over SMU last year in Boise. The Mustangs went 26-2 after the loss to finish the season at 30-5 overall.
