Geraldo Rivera: MSNBC Anchors Don't Care About Evidence, Are 'Cheerleading' for Zimmerman Conviction

Geraldo Rivera on Friday accused MSNBC anchors of not caring at all about the evidence concerning the shooting of Trayvon Martin and instead "cheerleading for the conviction of George Zimmerman."

Appearing on Fox New's The O'Reilly Factor, Rivera specifically pointed his finger at Martin Bashir, Chris Matthews, Lawrence O'Donnell, Al Sharpton, and Ed Schultz (video follows with transcript and commentary:

BILL O'REILLY, HOST: Continuing now with our lead story, ABC News and NBC News covering the Trayvon Martin case in opposite ways. Here now Fox News anchor Geraldo Rivera. And you say?

GERALDO RIVERA, FOX NEWS ANCHOR: I, first of all, want to point out that I spent many years in both news organizations -- 15 at ABC, eight at NBC. I think they are honorable people.

But NBC has changed since I was there. It was the creation of MSNBC or rather the decision by MSNBC to choose ideological sides in life generally and most specifically in this criminal action. I believe that they made an ideological decision that they would be on the side of the victim in this case and that they would argue strenuously for the prosecution of George Zimmerman and the ultimate conviction of George Zimmerman. But when you point to Martin Bashir, Chris Matthews, Larry O'Donnell, Al Sharpton my goodness --

O'REILLY: We didn't even use him. We didn't even use the reverend. Right.

Trayvon%20and%20George%20421_0.jpg
RIVERA: -- or Ed Schultz -- Mr. Ed. You have people who have a very firm conviction that it's not so much about the evidence as it is about the fact that a young, unarmed, black, teenager was shot dead doing something innocent.

(CROSSTALK)

O'REILLY: And none of those people were there and they don't know what happened.
But here is what is happening in the country. So you have this big fissure between ABC News which is doing hard news reporting and they come up with this startling shot of Zimmerman's head covered with blood, ok? So that's on Channel 7

.
And then you turn to Channel 4 and instead of hard news analysis, you have, as you put it, an ideological take on a life or death story that's going to be decided by a jury. Now, in your opinion, does this taint the entire NBC News operation?

RIVERA: Well, that's an excellent question. I think taint might be a strong word.
Let me just say that NBC also has people like Pete Williams who are lawyers and excellent analysts and ABC has Dan Abrams a wonderful analyst also. I believe they are now invested, Bill, in a way that is more political than it is legal analysis.

O'REILLY: So the whole organization, NBC.

RIVERA: Well, when you have Reverend Sharpton, let's say -- and I really hold him in high regard and I understand many, many people do not. They think that he is a charlatan. I think he really is a fine civil rights leader who has changed his life in the last 20 years.
And he is one of the moving forces to get the prosecution and the arrest --

O'REILLY: But he's in a bad -- he has been -- this has not been a good moment for him.

RIVERA: But now, jump-cut. Here you have Al Sharpton as the face of the person pushing the arrest of George Zimmerman. He also anchors his own shown on MSNBC. How could it not affect that network's coverage? I believe that they are cheerleading for the conviction of George Zimmerman. I have no doubt about it.

Later in the discussion, Rivera said, "We're coming on the 20th anniversary of the Rodney King decision in which an all-white jury in Simi Valley in Los Angeles acquitted the cops who were seen clearly beating up Rodney King...The verdict in that case acquitting the cops set off a firestorm of controversy and rioting...There is a situation here where George Zimmerman is going to be acquitted and people are going to be disappointed because of advocates like MSNBC."

I couldn't agree more.

The only question is whether the folks at MSNBC will be held accountable if their irresponsible behavior leads to the loss of property and God forbid the loss of life.

Maybe it's time for MSNBC's Chris Matthews to retire.

On Friday's Hardball, the 66-year-old host actually said that people's view of the Trayvon Martin-George Zimmerman case is impacted by "so much history ever since the first slave arrived in the United States" (video follows with transcribed highlights and commentary):

In the middle of a lengthy opening segment about the case gripping the nation, Matthews played a clip of Florida prosecutor Bernie De La Rionda telling a press conference, ?You haven?t heard all the evidence. Please be patient and wait for the trial.?

After the clip, Matthews said, ?Well, this is so tricky here, Joy-Ann, and I don?t know how we?re going to cover this. I?m going to try to do it with the presumption of innocence as we do in all cases.?

Isn?t that nice of Matthews to "try" to cover this case ?with the presumption of innocence?? You'd think that after decades in the business, it wouldn't be too difficult to presume the innocence of the accused when reporting on a murder trial.

For her part, Joy-Ann Reid of The Grio responded, ?The bottom line here is that this case has already been litigated and relitigated on Twitter, online, on blogs. Everyone feels that they too are prosecuting this case and people have taken a side.

And I think that raises a lot of troubling questions really about jury selection. Is the entire jury pool in the country tainted and can Zimmerman get a fair trial??

Actually, the taint is on the Left not the Right.

It?s the folks on the left that have already convicted Zimmerman and are just awaiting sentencing. That?s how atrocious the reporting has been by much of the liberal media.

By contrast, the Right?s position is and has been that Zimmerman is innocent until proven guilty and that none of us has seen all the evidence to render a judgment. That will come out in the trial.

With this in mind, I think Reid was projecting the short-comings and failings of her side in this debate onto those that have acted far more responsibly.

But fasten your seatbelts, for Matthews? response was startling.

?What scares me if we could all watch the picture, like a movie, a tape of everything that happened that night, from the beginning to the end, I think there would be difference of attitudes about guilt and innocence. That?s what scares me about this case, there?s so many different perspectives, so much history ever since the first slave arrived in the United States. The attitude of history here, you can?t push it aside I don?t think.?

What? So whenever a crime is committed against a black person by someone other than a black person, the ?history ever since the first slave arrived in the United States? is a factor?

Shouldn't the only factor be the evidence presented by the prosecution and the defense with total disregard to the color of these folks' skin or something that was outlawed centuries ago in this country?

It's been almost 150 years since the Emancipation Proclamation, and almost 50 years since the last Civil Rights Act, and slavery is still a part of our criminal justice system?

How sad that in the year 2012, a so-called newscaster on a so-called news network thinks this.

It seems a metaphysical certitude racism will never end in this country as long as people like Matthews bring slavery into every mixed race incident.

While checking facebook today, I came across a post about how the 'liberal media' is trying to stir up racial issues and hide the truth about Trayvon Martin - see for yourself:

Yep, it's got it all, Trayvon is really 6'2", and evidently a 'gangsta' and the media is only showing us his 12 year old picture...
It's disgusting because the comments under this post have people defending Zimmerman, saying he was getting beat up by the 6'2" 'gangsta' when he pulled his weapon.
Fortunately, someone showed up and presented the truth about this:
This is another Trayvon Martin facebook page being used to defend this horrific act.
The real Trayvon Martin page is here:
https://www.facebook.com/...
And it obviously shows that the pictures in the media of Trayvon are the same as his facebook page. And, seeing his Facebook page, his likes and friends, make this all the more sad and real.

I wrote back to the poster that the 911 call made by a neighbor clearly has a young boy crying for 'help' and 'no, don't' before the gun blast is heard.
I won't place the 911 call audio here, because frankly, it's too disturbing, and obviously not Zimmerman calling for help.
I am posting this, because I know people that will circulate this false photo knowing its a fake just to dupe people and to allow people to hold on to their racists notions of what happened in this tragic and criminal shooting.
Don't be fooled, a boy was murdered for no reason than a racist's fear and hatred, and defending him with this false photo is no better.
