Capital fighter Arthur provides Limond with his own version of hell at Braehead
GLASGOW?S ex-British and European Welterweight Champion Gary Jacobs today aptly summed up Capital super-featherweight ace Alex Arthur?s brutally effective destruction of Glaswegian challenger Willie Limond at Braehead Arena.
Said Jacobs ? after Capital star Arthur had stopped Limond in one minute 51 seconds of round eight: ?Arthur isn?t just a ring talent he is a boxing talent and a half ? what a fighter!?
Arthur ignored the banners proclaiming ?welcome to hell Arthur? and the hostile torrent of booing from the partisan fans at the Braehead Arena to turn this British title fight into eight rounds of hell for challenger Limond.
The win now leaves the Capital star needing just one more notch on his Lonsdale belt to emulate his Leith Victoria predecessor Tancy Lee who won a belt outright.
Against a seething background of pro-Limond cheering the first round opened briskly with Arthur ? noticeably taller and with a big reach advantage ? trading jabs with Limond.
The pro-Limond fans roared as their hero scored with a rasping right cross to Arthur?s ear but the Edinburgh champion shrugged his punch off and held his own to tie the round.
The second round was marked by both boxers missing each other with stiff combinations while scoring with the occasional jab and hook. Another even round.
However the third was sensational for Arthur as he caught Limond with a crashing right-hand head punch that staggered the Glaswegian who retreated quickly round the ring as Arthur plastered him with jabs, hooks and upper cuts.
Arthur then rocked Limond with a beautiful upper cut and cracking power-packed combination punches that had the Glasgow man glad to hear the bell.
The fourth saw more of the same as defending champion Arthur drove Limond round the ring under a torrent of quality shots.
But the fifth round was the key one that put the writing on the wall for Limond as Arthur explained post-fight.
He said: ?My coach Freddie Roach had been working on feinting a left hook then crossing Limond with a straight right and that?s exactly how I cut his left eye in round five.?
In round six a slashing right upper cut ripped open Limond?s damaged eye again as he was pursued ruthlessly around the ring by Arthur.
By round seven it was Limond who was looking like a fugitive from hell as his damaged eye closed rapidly ? a fact that a now rampant Arthur capitalised on by attacking from the Glasgow man?s blind side and hitting him with hurtful triple jabs to the head.
In the eighth and final round a tremendous right upper cut to Limond?s jaw made even the legions of his now silent ringside fans gasp as Limond staggered on the verge of a knockout under a torrent of punches to head and body prompting English referee Richie Davies to jump in and save the battered Glaswegian.
Limond?s manager Alex Morrison said after the bout: ?I totally underestimated Arthur, he has a jaw of iron and he was just too strong for Willie and punched far too hard for my boxer.?
Limond was taken to a Glasgow hospital for observation after the fight where he received eight stitches in his battered eye.
Speaking from his Glasgow home on Sunday the beaten challenger paid tribute to his Edinburgh conqueror saying: ?I have no alibis. Alex Arthur was the better man, much too strong and big for me.
?His reach caused me all sorts of problems.?
?I?ve actually phoned Alex and told him this but now I will fight at featherweight.?
Arthur said: ?When Willie hit me with that shot on the ear in the first round I knew that he couldn?t hurt me so I decided to bide my time until Freddie Roach told me to go for it in the third round ? now bring on Michael Gomez!?
Roach hailed his new charge?s performance claiming: ?I felt Alex could have finished it as early as the fourth round but he proved he is a world class fighter.
?His combinations were terrific and he followed my strategy in cutting off Limond?s ability to move in the ring brilliantly too.? Arthur?s manager Frank Maloney hailed his boxer?s destruction of Limond.
He said: ?Sensational, that was Alex Arthur against Limond but I always knew that Alex would be too big and too strong for Willie and punch too hard for him and so it proved but now for Michael Gomez.?
Arthur?s ring mentor Irish ex-world champion Barry McGuigan said: ?Alex was immense he broke Limond down in an even more impressive fashion than I expected.?
Freddy Roach also helped to fire up Alex who has proved once again that the bigger the occasion the bigger the performance.?Meanwhile, Gilmerton light-welterweight Gary Young made it a Capital double by dropping English opponent Leroy Williamson for an eight count in the second round en route to scoring a 40-35 points shut out.
It was a victory that keeps hot Capital prospect Young?s unbeaten pro record intact.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Arthur is a 130 lb'er, always has been. Khan has been fighting at 138, he's a big 135 lb'er who will eventually move up. After the Arthur fight, Limond decided he wasn't big enough for the 130 lb division and was moving down to 126. Now he's moving up to fight a guy who could easily fight at 140...lol
As mentioned in the article, Limond had problems with Arthurs length...Arthur is 5'9" Kahn is 5'10"
Also mentioned was Limond's inability to take Arthurs punches at 130...Khan hits very hard at 135 and he's aggressive
And the icing on the cake, Limond didn't have any power at 130 and he'll have even less at 135. Arthur took his best shot and didn't feel a thing, the guy has 8 ko's in 30 fights and he's fought mostly scrubs. Limond doesn't have the firepower to keep Kahn off of him, Kahn will walk right through the pitter patter and drop bombs on the little guy. Arthur stopped Limond in 7.5 rounds, Kahn could do it in half the time but I'll take the 8.5
I loaded up on this one, line moved to -145 right after I played it
