UAB shutdown their football program also today
That sucks for them. Two many teams from Alabama in SEC will do that to you if you don't have a campus field and are a commuter school basically. They'll try again in the future, they were a club sport for a while under Watson Brown and they have a few alumni, notably Roddy White who attended UAB before turning pro.
But unless they put campus facilities on campus for the students and get away from the commuter type school which they are, it's going to be hard for them to compete in football. Not much to do in Birmingham on a Saturday when Bama and Auburn are playing at home on the same day. It kills attendance which is the key ingredient to funding your program at the D1 level.
I do know that the players that are there, if they decide to play in a Bowl if they get invited to one, need to play in that bowl game so that the other schools can evaluate them as they will be eligible to transfer and play right away in 2015.
