IN THE DUGOUT: With lefty Mike Matthews scheduled to start for St. Louis today, Brewers manager Davey Lopes contemplated resting corner outfielders Geoff Jenkins and Jeromy Burnitz, both of whom bat left-handed. That plan could change, however, because the team has lost four in a row and Burnitz was ejected in the top of the first inning Monday.

Lowdown: In each of his last two outings, Brewers rookie right-hander Ben Sheets allowed five runs and failed to pitch past the fifth. He'll need to improve his performance to have a chance against the Cardinals today. Sheets' problem lately has been an over-reliance on his curveball. The Cardinals were patient against him last week at Miller Park, waiting to get ahead in the count and then drilling fastballs. The Brewers, who are 4-5 against left-handed starters this season, dropped a 7-4 decision against Matt Morris Thursday at Miller Park. Richie Sexson hit two homers but the Brewers managed little else in six innings against Matthews, who allowed three hits, walked one and struck out six.
