One of the nice things about the first weeks of the NASCAR season is that you get a chance to see how drivers run at a variety of tracks. From the restrictor-plate racing at Daytona to the flat corners of Phoenix to the high speeds Las Vegas, the Cup Series has already visited three very different tracks. The trend will continue this weekend when the series heads to Bristol Motor Speedway for some short track racing. Granted, attempts to undo the recent changes have yet to bring back the bumping and banging that made the track famous, but there is always going to be something unique about jamming 43 cars onto a half-mile track.
From a fantasy perspective, the constant changes are kind of an annoyance. Not all the drivers that dominated on the track's original configuration continued their success when the progressive banking was added. Meanwhile, some of the drivers that had excelled on the new track seemed to take a step back last summer when Bristol unveiled its latest layout. One race is too small of a sample size to say for sure, but there is a good chance that we are just beginning to figure out which drivers will flourish and which will struggle on the latest version of Bristol. It could be an interesting weekend in Thunder Valley.

1. Jimmie Johnson, #48 Lowe's/Kobalt Tools, Hendrick Motorsports [Yahoo Class A]

Remember when Bristol was one of his worst tracks? Well, Johnson has finished in the top 10 in seven of his last eight starts at the track, including four straight. During the stretch, he has finished in the top-five on five occasions, including four finishes of third or better.

2. Matt Kenseth, #20 Husky/Dollar General, Joe Gibbs Racing [Yahoo Class A]

People often think of aggressive drivers as having the most success at Bristol, but Kenseth's smooth style has its place, as well. After all, his 10.3 average finish since the 2003 season is tied for the second best in the series, and he has 15 top-10s in the 20 races during the stretch. More importantly, he has six top-10s in his last seven starts at Bristol, including four finishes of sixth or better.

3. Brad Keselowski, #2 Miller Lite, Penske Racing [Yahoo Class A]

The defending race winner has actually won two of the last three races at Bristol. Granted, he did have a bad outing at the track last fall, but the back-to-back victories that preceded it speak for themselves. Overall, Keselowski is an underrated short track option, but he won't be for long if he keeps winning races at Bristol.

4. Kyle Busch, #18 Mars Brands/Interstate Batteries, Joe Gibbs Racing [Yahoo Class B]

Although he hasn't been quite as dominant at the track lately, Busch is still one of the best in the business at Bristol. He is a five-time winner at the track, and his 10.3 average finish is tied for the second best among active drivers in the last 20 races. Busch finished sixth at Bristol last summer, and he is also a threat to go to Victory Lane at the bullring.

5. Denny Hamlin, #11 FedEx, Joe Gibbs Racing [Yahoo Class A]

Despite some occasional bad luck at Bristol, Hamlin always seems to have one of the fastest cars. He has managed to finish seventh or better six times in his last 10 starts at the track; more importantly, he finally broke through and won at Bristol last summer. With the monkey off his back, Hamlin could go on a serious roll in Thunder Valley.

6. Carl Edwards, #99 Fastenal/Aflac/UPS/Subway, Roush Fenway Racing [Yahoo Class B]

Edwards has a bad year at Bristol in 2012, but honestly, he disappointed just about everywhere. In his 11 previous starts at the track, he posted a 9.2 average finish and went to Victory Lane twice. Don't write of years of solid finishes because of one bad year.

7. Brian Vickers, #55 Aaron's Dream Machine, Michael Waltrip Racing [Yahoo Class B]

He will make his 2013 debut this weekend, and if last season taught us anything, Vickers should be an excellent fantasy play this weekend. After all, he picked up a pair of top-five finishes at Bristol in 2012, and he was a serious factor for the win before settling for fourth in the night race. Take advantage of him being in the field this weekend.

8. Kasey Kahne, #5 Farmers Insurance/Quaker State, Hendrick Motorsports [Yahoo Class A]

For the most part, Kahne has been wildly inconsistent at Bristol, compiling a 19.7 average finish. That being said, he is in the middle of his best stretch at the track, picking up four finishes of 11th or better in his five starts. Kahne still isn't a lock to finish near the front of the field by any means, but a top-10 is certainly possible.

9. Martin Truex, Jr., #56 NAPA Auto Parts, Michael Waltrip Racing [Yahoo Class B]

It took him 11 starts at Bristol to crack the top 10, but Truex has been on a roll at the track lately. He has a 5.3 average finish in his last three starts, finishing in the top three in two of those starts. Don't let his 18.7 average finish at Bristol fool you. Truex has plenty of value this weekend.

10. Jeff Gordon, #24 Drive to End Hunger/Axalta, Hendrick Motorsports [Yahoo Class A]

Gordon provides a nice balance of safety and upside this weekend. In his last 10 starts at Bristol, he has finished in the top 15 eight times. Gordon also has four top-five finishes during the stretch, including third-place finishes in two of his last three starts at the track.

11. Clint Bowyer, #15 5-Hour Energy, Michael Waltrip Racing [Yahoo Class A]

After a mix of good and bad results at Bristol throughout his career, Bowyer looked strong in his first year at the track with Michael Waltrip Racing. He finished fourth in the March event and followed it up with a seventh-place run in the night race. Bowyer has typically been a solid short track option, and he should make a nice addition to fantasy rosters this weekend.

12. Dale Earnhardt, Jr., #88 National Guard/Diet Mountain Dew, Hendrick Motorsports [Yahoo Class B]

The good news is that Junior's 9.8 average finish in the last 20 races at Bristol is the best in the series. The bad news is that he has gone five races at the track without cracking the top 10 and nine without cracking the top five. Junior's value comes from his consistency, and while he is definitely a safe pick, don't count on an elite finish from him either.

13. Kevin Harvick, #29 Budweiser/Rheem, Richard Childress Racing [Yahoo Class A]

Formerly one of the masters of Bristol, the recent changes to the track have taken a toll on Harvick's numbers. He has just a single top-10 finish in his last eight starts at the track and zero top-five finishes. Granted, Harvick has managed five top-15s in his last six Bristol starts, but he has shown no signs of recapturing his elite form.
14. Greg Biffle, #16 3M/Bondo, Roush Fenway Racing [Yahoo Class B]

His 12.2 average finish in the last 20 races is still fourth best in the series, but the normally consistent Biffle has struggled a bit lately. He has finished outside the top 10 in his last three starts at the track, posting a 21.0 average finish during the stretch. Maybe it is just a mini-slump, but with all the track changes going on at Bristol, the downward trend is concerning.

15. Paul Menard, #27 Menards, Richard Childress Racing [Yahoo Class B]

After beginning his Bristol career with seven finishes outside the top 15, Menard has righted the ship lately. He has finished in the top 10 in three of his last four starts at the track, including 10th-place finishes in both of his starts in 2012. I wouldn't pencil in Menard as a lock for the top 10 this weekend, but a top-15 wouldn't be too surprising.

16. Marcos Ambrose, #9 Stanley/Dewalt Power Tools, Richard Petty Motorsports [Yahoo Class B]

In eight career starts at Bristol, Ambrose has finished in the top 15 five times. More importantly, he has finished in the top 10 four times, including a fifth-place run last summer. Call him purely a road course ace if you want, but Ambrose has a handful of oval tracks where he has legitimate value, as well.
17. Ryan Newman, #39 Quicken Loans/Haas Automation, Stewart-Haas Racing [Yahoo Class B]

Despite a hard crash at Bristol last August, Newman has been a solid option at the track for the most part. In his eight starts in Thunder Valley prior to last summer, he finished 16th or better in all eight starts. Newman had seven finishes of 12th or better during the stretch, including six top-10s. If you're looking for a driver that can deliver a solid top-15 this weekend, Newman should do the trick.

18. Tony Stewart, #14 Bass Pro Shops/Mobil 1, Stewart-Haas Racing [Yahoo Class A]

Bristol has become a bit of a nightmare for Stewart. He has finished outside the top 10 in seven of his last eight starts at the track, including five straight. Stewart has a 20.9 average finish during the stretch and has managed just two top-15s. You can never write Stewart completely off, but all signs say stay away from the three-time champ this weekend.

19. Jeff Burton, #31 Caterpillar/Cheerios, Richard Childress Racing [Yahoo Class B]

Nothing is a safe bet with Burton these days, but he has been somewhat predictable at Bristol lately. In addition to a sixth-place run last March, he has cracked the top 20 in seven of his last eight starts at the track. Owners will want to keep expectations on the low end of the spectrum, but Burton should at least be able to provide a top-20 finish.

20. Kurt Busch, #78 Furniture Row, Furniture Row Racing [Yahoo Class B]

For his career, Busch is one of the most decorated drivers at Bristol. He is a five-time winner at the track, and he has eight top-15s in his last 11 starts at the track. The bad news is that he has finished outside the top 15 in his three most recent starts at Bristol, and it remains to be seen if his move to Furniture Row Racing will allow him to return to form. Busch certainly has some upside, but a wait-and-see approach is probably the way to go.

21. Joey Logano, #22 Shell-Pennzoil, Penske Racing [Yahoo Class B]

Logano got a rough introduction to Bristol, and while he still has a 22.1 average finish, he has been a bit better lately. Logano has finished 16th or better in his last three starts at the track, including a career-best eighth-place run last summer. He is definitely heading in the right direction, but one top-10 isn't enough to make him a great fantasy play by any means.

22. Jamie McMurray, #1 McDonald's/Cessna, Earnhardt Ganassi Racing [Yahoo Class B]

It is tough to recommended McMurray at any track because of his tendency to have terrible performances, but Bristol is an exception. He has finished 11th or better in five of his last seven starts at the track, including a seventh-place run last March. McMurray could be worth a look this weekend.

23. Ricky Stenhouse Jr., #17 Best Buy/Valvoline/Zest, Roush Fenway Racing [Yahoo Class C]

Bristol can often be tough on rookies, so it is hard to know what to expect from Stenhouse this weekend. It does bode well that Roush Fenway Racing has had success at the track in the past, but I recommend at least waiting until after practice before making a decision on whether or not to take a chance on the rookie.

24. Juan Montoya, #42 Target, Earnhardt Ganassi Racing [Yahoo Class B]

Montoya has actually been decent at Bristol compared to other tracks. He has finished in the top 20 in eight of his 12 starts at the track and even has three top-10s. That being said, the upside is probably only a top-15, which doesn't exactly offset the risk that comes with a DNF machine like Montoya

NASCAR Picks for Bristol

by Brian Polking, Monday, March 11, 2013 1:16:40 PM CDTFFToolbox.com

25. A.J. Allmendinger, #51 Phoenix Racing, Phoenix Racing [Yahoo Class C]

He has had his share of bad outings at Bristol, but Allmendinger has finished in the top 20 in three of his last five, including two straight. Throw in the fact that he was solid in his season debut at Phoenix, and Allmendinger could be a sneaky sleeper this weekend.

26. Aric Almirola, #43 Smithfield Foods, Richard Petty Motorsports [Yahoo Class B]

In seven starts at Bristol, Almirola has managed three top-20 finishes. Unfortunately, he has also finished 35th or worse four times. Bristol appears to be one of those tracks that Almirola is still trying to figure out, and he doesn't need to be on fantasy rosters in the meantime.

27. Bobby Labonte, #47 Kingsford/Clorox/Bush's Beans, JTG Daugherty Racing [Yahoo Class B]

The veteran has been boom or bust at Bristol lately, but does have a pair of top-15 finishes in his last four starts;there aren't a lot of longshot picks that can claim that. In any case, Labonte could make a surprisingly useful pick if you're desperate for a sleeper, but the odds are just as likely that he will saddle your team with a horrible finish.

28. Casey Mears, #13 GEICO, Germain Racing [Yahoo Class C]

Mears was never good at Bristol, even when he was driving for some of the top teams in NASCAR. That being said, he has reeled off three straight top-25 finishes at the track. The ceiling obviously isn't high, but recent history says Mears could pop in the top 25 this weekend.

29. Danica Patrick, #10 GoDaddy.com, Stewart-Haas Racing [Yahoo Class C]

She actually had a decent run going in to her Bristol debut last August before Regan Smith ended her night, but the physical racing at the track isn't going to change. Staying out of trouble will be the top priority for Patrick this weekend as she tries to gain experience, and as a result, her fantasy value is going to be limited.

30. Travis Kvapil, #93 Burger King/Doctor Pepper, BK Racing [Yahoo Class C]

If Kvapil has a strong suit, it is short track racing. He debuted at Bristol with a top-10 finish and last summer, he cracked the top 20. Don't get me wrong, Kvapil is anything but a safe pick, but if you play in a league where you have to pick a different driver every week, there probably isn't a better track to use Kvapil.
