ELBOW SURGERY PUTS GOALIE ON BENCH TILL MARCH
Martin Brodeur will be out for four months after elbow surgery, the team announced today.
Brodeur injured his elbow in a game Saturday against the Thrashers. It was first announced as a bruise, but further testing showed a more serious injury.
"This Thursday morning, Martin Brodeur will undergo surgery to repair the distal bicep in the left elbow," Lou Lamoriello said in a statement. "We will not have any further comment or update until after the surgery is complete."
Lamoriello was optimistic Brodeur would make a full recovery.
"I look at the glass as half-full," the GM said today in Newark. "This is not a career-ending injury."
Brodeur is seven wins shy of tying the all-time record for goalies, held by Patrick Roy (551).
Kevin Weekes likely will be the team's No. 1 goaltender in his place.
Last night's 2-0 loss to the Sabres marked the first time in 51 regular-season games that Brodeur did not start.
