In 1875, the prize for winning was $2,850. In May of 2004 the winner of the Derby took home a record $5,854,800. Giacomo was a surprise winner of the 2005 Kentucky Derby and generated a $102.60 win pay-off, the second largest ever in Kentucky Derby history.
