First off sorry for my last 2 weeks performance, for whoever tailed . Luckily for me I don't flat bet, so I have walked away each week with a profit. Like I said that Warren play was my largest of the year, so it was nice to come through with a w there. If you go .500 in golf picking favorites, you will get ran over. Congrats to Jimmy Time and Phar for their nice picks last week. :0corn This is one quote i saved that I think might be useful this week..
Q. Looking ahead to Torrey Pines, how fun is that to go back and be able to play there with -- basically you had an opportunity to play there many times and grew up in San Diego, is that a nice thing to look forward to?
CHARLEY HOFFMAN: Yeah, that is my Major for the year. Obviously there's the Major, but that's my Major. Growing up there, watching the tournament, playing for my first start when I was 16 as an amateur, there's definitely I learned so much as an amateur that I thank the Century Club every year and Tom Wilson to have the opportunity to play there as an amateur. I learned so much playing there that helped me succeed in professional golf that I would never ever gain if I didn't do that and I'm going to try my hardest. I wouldn't say that I put a lot of pressure on myself, but I definitely give it my all that week and hopefully I can give the fans of San Diego something to cheer about in the off week that if we're not going to the Super Bowl.

To the entire golfing world the first major of the year is the Masters at Augusta National. However to Pat Perez, the year's first "major" is this week at Torrey Pines.

I first met Pat at the driving range at Torrey when he was a bright-eyed 13-year old who dreamed of playing on the PGA Tour and particularly, the Buick Invitational. Even back then, anyone could see he had all the talent required to be a Tour player although he was not good enough to beat me!

How things have changed.

PP arrived in San Diego on this past Saturday afternoon. After the five-hour trek from Scottsdale, he came straight up to Torrey where we had a session on the range. I am glad to say he is still swinging well . After practice it was one of many taco runs this week - to our favorite stop EL COXITAN.

Sunday, golf played second fiddle to football - the AFC Championship game - and what a disappointment that was. Who knows what might have happened with a fully fit LaDanian Tomlinson, Antonio Gates and Philip Rivers...

Monday PP is playing a Pro-Am in Palm Desert, driving back to San Diego and then we start serious practice on Tuesday, followed by a Wednesday Pro-Am.

I think PP will have another good week as long as he doesn't try too hard to play well, being as Torrey means so much to him.

Go low.

Coach MO
He is also coming off an impressive weekend that landed him in the top 8.

I did have the same leans last year (went back and looked at my notes) and both charlie and pat perez got crushed. So who knows :142smilie

Three-time Buick Invitational winner Phil Mickelson on Monday canceled his news conference scheduled for Tuesday at Torrey Pines because of an upper respiratory illness that has bothered him the past two days.

After a visit with his doctor Monday morning in San Diego, he was confined to bed rest for two days.

He has not withdrawn from the Buick Invitational at Torrey Pines. He said his goal is to play in Wednesday morning's pro-am. He is to tee off on the No. 1 tee at 6:42 a.m. on the North Course. He also plans to play Thursday in the Buick Invitational, which would be his 2008 PGA Tour debut.

Mickelson has been plagued by heavy congestion, fatigue and shortness of breath since October, a Mickelson spokesman reported. It's unclear, the spokesman said, if Mickelson's condition was caused by working on his Rancho Santa Fe property following the wildfires that devastated his neighborhood or if the illness developed shortly after that when Mickelson was in Singapore. He won the HSBC Champions event the following week in Shanghai, but Mickelson said he has not felt 100 percent since then.

His condition worsened over the weekend.

Looks like the greeks lines are what i was expecting. Was hoping for a Hoffman vs Villegas since they are valued near the same in outrights. This is gonna be a lot tougher than I thought. :0corn

Looks like a tough week for outrights also. Tiger going for four in a row, on the same course that will hold the US Open in June...I know he's gonna win the US Open, but will he win this week?

Man i have an injury file which i think is key to matchups. And was surprised to see Immelman in the field.. then i see this
Trevor Immelman withdrew on Monday morning from the Buick Invitational.
Immelman had a benign growth the size of a golf ball on his diaphragm removed a month ago and it looks like he needs more time to recover. He still is scheduled to play in next week's FBR Open. He has been replaced in the field by Chez Reavie, who finished tied for fifth place at last week's Bob Hope Chrysler Classic.

 Damn..If Daly goes this week he is an insta fade no matter who he goes against.

Leonard's rare show
Count Justin Leonard, the runner-up in last week's Bob Hope Chrysler Classic, as one of the players who is only competing in the Buick Invitational this week because the U.S. Open is here in June.

Leonard has played at Torrey Pines only three times in his career, and hasn't played on the weekend once. He's played only one round on the renovated South Course, shooting a 74 while he was missing the cut in 2005.

?I'll probably pay a little closer attention than I normally do just preparing for it, so that I feel like when I come back in June I'll have done that additional homework and it will be finished,? Leonard said.

On not playing the course in the past, Leonard said, ?It seems like this time of year we always play in really soft conditions. I don't feel like that suits my golf game very well. I don't really enjoy playing soft golf courses. I would rather see the golf course play firm and fast and narrow up the fairways and just make it difficult.

?Seeing how they're kind of getting ready for the U.S. Open, and they know a lot of guys are coming to get a look at it, I think it will be set up more U.S. Open.?

Ugly weather
The forecast for this week is likely to disappoint Leonard and others who were hoping to see firmer-than-normal conditions at Torrey. The light rain that hit many San Diego communities yesterday mostly missed La Jolla, but weather.com predicts a 40 percent chance of showers from Thursday through Sunday. The high temperatures are supposed to hover in the high 50s.

Whalers i think this explains the sony
? Robert Allenby, who battled flu symptoms at the Sony Open, played increasingly better at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic, finishing tied for 12th. He plans to play roughly the same west-coast schedule he did a year ago when he . "I should have won three or four times last year, realistically. I was playing that well," Allenby said. "My goal this year is to simply learn to finish it off better."

Good read here..

Q. What was the message that you tried to impart to Anthony Kim? You've obviously been a mentor to Tiger. What was your message to him? He had a successful year and was in a funk after the season, but what is it about him that you like?
MARK O'MEARA: I would say -- I met him that week. I had never seen Anthony before, never met Anthony. I didn't play that much on the regular TOUR last year, as you know. I don't know what tournament it was this last year where he was playing, and I just remember -- I thought I saw an interview, I could be totally off base, but I thought I saw where he was maybe tied for the lead or was going to be in the last group on Sunday, Colonial or somewhere. And the golf reporter, whoever it was, they were interviewing him, and they said, Anthony, you've been really playing well this year, you're in the final group, and how do you feel about going into tomorrow? He said, I just don't understand why I haven't won yet. I thought that was pretty -- I'm not sure that's an exact quote, don't get me. But it was something in that manner.
But yet when I met him, he came up, and he said, Mark, I'm so excited to be playing with you as your partner and I've grown up watching you play and know what you've accomplished on the regular TOUR and winning the majors, how many tournaments you've won and I know you're obviously very close with Tiger. But I know I've made some comments and I've made some mistakes, and I was very young and I was very na?ve. I've got to tell you, I've learned from those, and I want to change.
So I went to dinner with him a couple nights, and I told him for him to come up and say that to me, somebody who he really didn't know that well, was already a step in the right direction. He knows he's made some mistakes. He's willing to change and become a better person and a better player, and I think he just -- we played with Nick Price and Charles Howell, and we grew up in a little different era than a lot of young players today.
I just conveyed to Anthony, I've been around the game a long time. I'm not an expert but I've watched a lot and I've seen a lot. But you've got as much talent or more than any other player I've ever seen besides Tiger, and I believe that.
I'm not trying to put pressure on him, and I told him that. Here's I think what you need to do, and I laid it out for him. Unless you don't like money and you don't want to win tournaments, then maybe you continue down that other road. But if you really want to win tournaments -- he could win multiple tournaments a year easily and win major championships. That's how talented he is in my opinion.
I'll tell you what, I've never been more excited about playing with a young player and watching how he played -- granted, it was pretty cool, too, that he was my partner. I know we didn't win, but I think I'm a pretty good judge of what I see in somebody's bag and what they've got in talent, and that kid has got it.
I played with him a little this winter. He was out in the desert practicing pretty hard. I saw him yesterday, and he was like, I missed ten putts inside of five feet. I said, listen, I don't know how you played. But I watched you make a big putt for two-putt on 17 and I watched how you finished 18. I know it's tied for third and I know you want to win badly. But you've got to knock at the door, keep knocking at the door and sooner or later they're going to open the door. It's going to happen.
You're not going to win every week. If you try and force it too hard you're always going to get in your own way. So you've got to let it come to you and be patient. Then when you win, it will build on itself. You'll learn from that. Life is all about learning experiences. This kid very much impresses me a lot, a real lot.

Q. How does his talent compare to Tiger at 21?
MARK O'MEARA: Well, 21, 22 Tiger already won six tournaments. I think Tiger's mental game was probably stronger. I think actual technique-wise, swing-wise, I reckon Anthony's swing is better at 21 or 22 than what Tiger's was. But just because you have a good swing and just because you might hit the ball well doesn't mean that you're going to win tournaments. We've seen that. We've seen players that don't have very good swings that -- this guy if you watched him on the range you wouldn't think he had a chance. But yet the guy goes out and has got the heart and the mind and the short game.
I see a little bit of immaturity, younger, kind of aggressive, kind of gets a little hot under the collar, but all those things are things that we've kind of talked about. You know, hopefully he'll take that to heart. I imagine he's going to play well this week, too, because he's coming off a good week last week and he's confident. There's no way he shouldn't play well every week. He's way too skilled not to.
CHRIS REIMER: Let's hope you play good this week, and good luck.

I'm wondering if Tiger may change his strategy this week. Is there a chance he hits a lot of 3 woods and 2-irons off the tee to prepare for the US Open? If so, he'd be at a huge disadvantage in the wet conditions. His focus may be more for the Open than actually winning this week. But Tiger could still win if he played in this matter but maybe the door is open just a bit...going to watch for some interviews

One more good read..

Justin Hicks qualified for a sponsor's exemption at this year's Buick Invitational by being named San Diego Chapter of the Southern California PGA's Player of the Year last year. A teaching pro at Stadium Golf, Hicks has missed qualifying for the Buick Invitational by one stroke three times.

For the last eight years he has arrived at Torrey Pines at dark-0:30 to follow Tiger Woods' practice round, which Woods always starts at daybreak on Tuesday. Hicks would videotape as many of Tiger's shots that he could and use the tape for teaching purposes at Stadium Golf.

But this year, Hicks is in the Buick Invitational field, and yesterday instead of videotaping the No. 1 golfer in he world, Hicks realized a dream come true by playing a practice round with Tiger Woods .

Hicks teed off alone just after 6:30 a.m., choosing to go in front of Woods rather than asking to join him on the tee.

"It's weird because it's like asking a pretty girl out, it's that kind of nerves," Hicks said.

Woods and his practice partner, Bubba Watson, joined up with him on the hole after Watson's drive went 80 yards over Hicks' head .

"I kind of knew he was going to tee off early, and I was hoping to play with him," Hicks said. "When he got to us on No. 1, he asked if he could join up."

Hicks said it was "nerve-wracking," playing a practice round with Woods.

"I felt like the ugly girlfriend with the hot girls next to her," Hicks said.

The three only played 14 holes, skipping five, six, seven and eight and jumping over to No. 9. It was there that Woods and Watson hit their tee shots simultaneously.

Hicks said he didn't say a word to Tiger or Bubba. They never said a word to him.

"It was still fun," Hicks said. "I was just trying to stay out of their way. Almost like a good caddy. Don't speak unless spoken to. The only thing I was hoping to do is I have two little boys and I was hoping to get Tiger to call them and leave a message on my cellphone."

Hicks, 37, said he wished he'd played better. Watson out-drove him and Woods by 40 to 50 yards on most holes. If it was any consolation, Hicks drove his ball equal to Woods on a few holes, especially at the end when Woods lost a few drives right.

"What was really frustrating was that at certain points I wasn't playing very well," Hicks said. "It's great to play golf with him, but not if you're not playing very well at certain points.
It was embarrassing, and you know, you're just working on your game."

Hicks not only was impressed with Woods, but he also couldn't believe Watson's length off the tee and his shot-making around the greens.

"Bubba hit driver, 7-iron into No. 1," Hicks said of the 520-yard, par-5 hole. "And he hit 8-iron on No. 17 (a 172-yard par-3).

Hicks said the entire experience seemed to go so quickly, and it did since they skipped four holes to get to No. 9. His caddy, Todd Howerton, said it was "surreal."

"Things happened so fast out there," Hicks said. "We played in an hour and 45 minutes, and it was over."

Actually, Woods did say a few words to Hicks. When they finished up on 18, Woods walked over to Hicks and his caddy and wished them good luck in the tournament.

Hicks will enjoy what he called the "celebrity treatment" he has seen the pros get every year he's been out here with his video camera.

"You know how Andy Warhol talked about that 15 minutes of fame, well this is my four days of fame here," said Hicks, who could add two more by making the cut on Friday.

W/O Woods---Allenby 50-1. I'm giving up backing virgin PGA winners. I'm not too hot on 1 time winners either. Although Allenby hasn't won in a while, he does know how to do it.

Kim over Olgilvy -111
Sabbatini over Choi +100 The interesting thing here is that both players names end in an "i" and neither are Italian.

I saw this quote from KJ
But thinking about it at home last week, and coming here and playing a practice round today, I now really think that the fade shots that I have really fit this course very well, and I feel like I'm going to have the best week ever at this tournament than what I've played in the past.

Take that for what its worth..
