Bush approval rating hits new low, Iraq support falling away: poll

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Public approval for US President George W. Bush (news - web sites) has hit a new low, as Americans show increasing disapproval over his administration's occupation of Iraq (news - web sites), a poll revealed.
The American president's overall job approval rating has fallen to 42 percent, down from a 49 percent rating recorded in an April 8-9 Newsweek poll.
For the first time since Bush took office in January 2001, a majority of Americans surveyed by Newsweek (52 percent) disapprove of him.
The Republican president's approval rating on Iraq has hit a record low, as well, plummeting to 35 percent from 44 percent in the April poll.
Just 41 percent of registered voters said they would like to see Bush re-elected, down from 46 percent in a March survey, while a majority of 51 percent said they would not.
The poll, conducted by Princeton Survey Research Associates International, canvassed 1,010 adults May 13-14 and had a three-percentage-point margin of error.
