Yesterday we went on an 8 mile kayaking trip. Got home everything was fine. Slept great. This morning I was sitting at my desk and I stretched my arms above my head and leaned back over my desk chair and tilted my head back to stretch and there was a horrific pop sound at the base of my skull and a terrible pain in my neck. Now my neck is so stiff I can barely move it without pain and I have pain about 10 inches down my spine. Right after it happened it made me sick to the point where I thought I was going to barf and I got all light headed and now have half a headache.

WTF did I do???

I took 3 advil and am trying to move it slowly to see if I can get it to relax a bit so I can move my head.

I don't like the loud pop you heard. If me, I would go to the chiropractor. If u don't like them or are scared of them, I would go to your MD who will prescribe anti-inflammatory medication, pain medication, and probably give you a steroid shot or maybe a Medrol dose-pack. This will be after he takes an almost always meaningless x-Ray that prolly won't show anything. Whatever you do, I would do it today. If it's not better in a few days, u might need an MRI.

Having some mild popping when u stretch is normal and the normal "clicking" of your facet joints. A "horrific pop" is something else, so seek treatment. Hope it's not too bad. Message me if any questions, and I could call you this evening on the way to work.

Clint gives very good advice here, I would follow it. Hope everything is all right.

Believe me I didn't like the loud pop either SixFive!! The pain is now radiating into the front of my rib cage (under my tata). When I take a deep breath I feel "pressure" in that area. I tried to lean my head over to answer my office phone and thought my head was going to snap off. Most of the pain shoots down the right side of my back when I do that. Everything seems to be more on the right side. I can turn my head to the left and lean it to the left but up, down and to the right is the worst. I'm not very trusting of back crackers since they messed up PaSprint's back so I think I'm going to call my regular dr. Thanks! I'll keep you updated.

Chicky,
I'm no nurse, but this sounds almost exactly like what I did to my neck one morning about a month ago. I rested in bed keeping my neck stable with an ice pack underneath it for as long as possible until I needed to get another one. A painkiller or two made it manageable and with plenty of rest, the pain went away for the most part by that evening. I also took a few Advil throughout the day, which helped with the inflammation. I was pretty stiff for a few days after, but that went away eventually. Right after I did it, I was told to go to the doctor and get it checked out, but chose not too... stubbornness I guess, but it also hurt to move around and driving to the doctor would have been difficult without being able to turn my neck really. You should probably do what 6'5" says, but just wanted to let you know what I went through because I was fine eventually and you should be too. Take care.

I took some advil and will be taking more shortly. Between work, Bre's field hockey game, and Kolby's baseball game I don't have down time to rest so I'm trudging through it for the time being but I will make sure as soon as I get home from the ball field tonight that I do rest. Still waiting on the chiropractor to call.

Ice it too, not heat.

I have no ice here. I'll have to do that later tonight when I get home. I have a "rice bag" I could probably throw around it while I watch the games. But in this heat that won't stay cold long either.

Chiropractor called. 2:45 Weds.

Wednesday?? That blows. Maybe your doctor could get you in sooner. I think that's too long to wait. You might need to go to Urgent Care tonight. If you lose function (numbness/tingling/non functioning limbs), go to the ER. If your pain is unbearable, go to the ER. Good luck tonight and please update.

I'm almost always on the side of wait and see in most cases, but your vibid description of the loud pop really has me concerned. I wish I was there to see and evaluate in person.

PS occupational therapists and physical therapists and some other healthcare professionals have something they use now called Kinesio-tape. If this is muscular, it will help you tremendously. Google it, and go see one if you know them.

I went to bed last night with a rice bag on my neck and took 2 Aleve. Slept pretty well after finally getting to sleep. Woke up this morning kind of stiff but with more movement on the right side and less pain. Had to drive to Lock Haven this morning to take a test and when I was driving I noticed I could turn my head more to the right to look for traffic. I can now turn it almost all the way to the right and more of the pain is gone. So I'm thinking if I keep up with the rice bag and the Aleve I should be ok in a day or two and shouldn't need the chiropractors appt tomorrow so I think I'm going to cancel that.
