No doubt this was going to happen. Could you imagine if he was still in place after the last game? A couple of days after each season the Canadiens have a season summary conference with the media to explain the way the season went. It would have been an ugly one if he was still in position.
It would have looked a little something like this:
"Hey Monsieur Gauthier, can you explain...
Cammalleri being traded during a game?
Perry Pearn fired before the game?
Jacques Martin's firing the day of a game?
Cunneyworth's choice as coach?
Trading Kostitsyn at the end of the season when his value was reduced to near nothing?
Giving Gomez icetime + PP when your season is over instead of letting kids like Eller/Leblanc get more ice time to develop for next season?
The signing of Andrei Markov for 3 years?
Why did you sign Campoli?
Why did you wait so long to sign Josh Gorges?
Why did you let Guy Boucher and Julien Brisebois work for other teams?
Why do you call your players "Monsieur" followed by their last name?
To which Monsieur Gauthier would have replied: Uhhhhhhh"
I'm sure I missed many more mistakes that could be explained by reactive decisions due to the lack of following the strategic plan for the team's long-term success (if there is any strategic plan).
Other notes: Bob Gainey was also relieved of his duties as advisor to GM. Serge Savard has been hired by Geoff Molson as a consultant to hire the next GM.

OK, enough said. Disappointing season. Time to move on!
I look forward to next year. Patrick Roy behind the bench, Vincent Damphousse as the General Manager... Gonna be an interesting next few weeks and summer shaping up the Montreal Canadiens for next season!!! :0074
