Not only are people seemingly confused as to how the first amendment works, but I think there’s plenty of confusion out there today on so called cancel culture. As usual, old Rev is here to help.
Cancel culture originally meant digging up old comments or actions that were socially acceptable at the time but judged harshly under today’s standards. Now, many on the left frame it as accountability for current statements or behavior, while the right still sees it as retroactive character assassination.
The shift in definitions is why the two sides often talk past each other—one means retroactive character assassination, the other means consequences for what you just said today.
