from the Pioneer Press:

Carlos Pulido vs. Sox: Pulido, in the majors for the first time since his only previous season with the Twins in 1994, hasn't allowed an earned run in three middle-relief appearances, spanning 8 1/3 innings. The crafty Pulido doesn't throw particularly hard, but he has changed speeds well and hasn't walked a batter as he prepares for the biggest major league game of his career. Four White Sox have faced Pulido in their careers, including Frank Thomas, who is 3 for 6 with two homers.

Pulido unveiled: Manager Ron Gardenhire disclosed the secret he had been keeping the past few days in announcing that left-hander Carlos Pulido, who hadn't pitched in the majors for nine years until last month's promotion from Class AAA, would start Tuesday against the White Sox.

Pulido, 32, has not allowed an earned run in three long-relief appearances for the Twins, spanning 8 1/3 innings.

Gardenhire had considered rookie Grant Balfour, who pitched in that spot in the rotation Wednesday but lasted only 2 2/3 nervous innings.

He said he made the decision after watching how effective Cleveland's left-handers were against the White Sox over the weekend.

"I'm ready for it," said Pulido, who has played in 10 cities and five countries since he spent the 1994 season with the Twins.

Notes: Carlos Pulido gets the start

By Mark Sheldon / MLB.com

MINNEAPOLIS -- For nine years Carlos Pulido has journeyed through several baseball outposts all over the world, never knowing if he'd get back to the big leagues.
Not only does the left-handed pitcher find himself in the middle of a pennant race with the Twins, now he'll be thrust into the rotation with a first-place finish on the line.

Manager Ron Gardenhire filled out his rotation for Minnesota's big four-game series at Chicago by naming the left-hander his starter for Tuesday at Chicago. Pulido was chosen ahead of veteran right-hander Rick Reed and rookie Grant Balfour.

Reed was activated from the disabled list before Sunday's game and has postseason experience. But, he's also struggled most of this year and is 5-12 with a 5.10 ERA. Balfour battled control problems for 2 2/3 innings during his first career start Wednesday against Anaheim.

"We think (Pulido) deserves it," Gardenhire said. "He's pitched very well since he's been up here. He has no fear. He's a veteran that's pitched against a lot of great hitters. We'll run him out there and see what happens."

Signed by the Twins last winter to a minor league contract, Pulido was 12-5 with a 3.56 ERA in 25 starts with Triple-A Rochester before getting promoted.

In his first three Major League appearances since 1994, Pulido hasn't allowed an earned run over 8 1/3 innings.

With career stops in Taiwan, Japan, Mexico, plus games in various winter league and minor-league towns, what was Pulido's biggest start in the last nine years?

"In Venezuela, 1996. We won (the Winter League championship)," he said.

As someone who has probably experienced more than your average 32-year-old pitcher, Pulido is approaching Tuesday's start with the calm of a veteran.

"I never expected that," Pulido said. "Now that I'm here, I'm glad I can help the team."

The Twins hope Pulido's deceptive off-speed stuff can keep White Sox hitters off balance. Chicago is 22-20 in games against a left-handed starter.

"We watched what Cleveland's lefties have done against Chicago and they've done ok," said Gardenhire. The Indians played the White Sox this weekend.
