Joe Girardi said after Saturday?s 16-3 win that Chad Green will draw the start in Sunday?s series-finale against the Orioles. The Yankees need a starter because they pushed struggling righthander Masahiro Tanaka back one day to pitch Monday in Anaheim.

Before the game, a source said Domingo German was expected to be called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to draw the start. The Yankees announced after the game that German will indeed be called up as Tommy Layne, who allowed a run in the ninth, was designated for assignment.

It?s possible that the plan was for German to start in case Green needed to be used on Saturday. Green said he found out he?d start during the ninth inning on Saturday.

Green, who began the season as a starter for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, has been in the big-league bullpen for more than a month. Green had last pitched on Tuesday entering Saturday?s game, pitching 3.1 perfect innings with five strikeouts on 45 pitches. German likely will be used to piggy-back Green.

?I was prepared to start,? Green said. ?They kind of mentioned it I guess a couple of days ago that it was a possibility. I knew if I didn?t get in the game tonight there was a chance that could happen.?

German is 3-5 with a 3.34 ERA in 10 games (nine starts) split between Trenton and Scranton, where he?s 2-1 with a 3.76 ERA in four games (three starts.) In his last outing on June 5, German gave up one earned run in 5.2 innings, allowing five hits and two walks with seven strikeouts.

JACOBY HELD BACK

Jacoby Ellsbury (concussion) will not travel with the Yankees for their upcoming West Coast trip against the Angels and Athletics. Girardi said the plan was for Ellsbury to begin working out with Double-A Trenton at some point during the week, though he wouldn?t be playing games.

Girardi said the injured center fielder hasn?t sprinted yet but he?s been riding a stationary bike, running on a treadmill and playing catch.
