Apparently The San Diego Chargers are being deceitful to the public about Philip Rivers contract negotiations when they say they are giving him a great offer.

On ESPN Radio they reported that part of The incentives that The Chargers included a $5 Million Bonus if Rivers can Get the team to 4 consecutive Super Bowls and another bonus incentive if Rivers makes 4 Pro-Bowls in his first 6 years.

These are virtually unattainable incentives and that The Chargers are being deceitful enough for Rivers to pack his bags and go home.

Butch league move by the Chargers -- in my opinion they should try to save face and give Rivers a reasonable contract. This is making Eli Manning look very smart for pulling the move that he did to get traded. If San Diego keeps this act up I wouldn't be shocked to see more of their first round draft picks in the future do exactly what Manning did.

I made a mistake.. He has to " WIN " 4 Superbowls .

Blackman,
You know I forgot about Manning doing that with The Chargers. That is a great point you have brought up.

Apparently The Chargers made this deal to get The 1st round pick from The Giants next year and may have had no intentions of signing Rivers at all.

Who would want to be drafted by them next year.

it is funny that some people here were predicting that manning would be the one who would have difficulty signing.

rivers will sign shortly with the chargers once the ownership starts feeling the heat.

This is all according to plan for San Diego.
Everyone always blames the team, but it is an easy way to go.

Word was out (not by the team) that Rivers was going to start this year. That is the last thing teams want out. That screws up the negotiating.
The ownership never said Rivers would start. Now Rivers wants starting QB money. The Chargers are going to wait until either just before or just after the season starts. That way they can say "you have missed too much training and can not start, and that means you wont get starter money".
Rivers has no leverage at all at that point.

Also dont forget we are talking real money here. Lets say the Chargers wait and save a couple million. Thats a couple MILLION. How many staff salaries can be paid with that amount of money?

No matter how much money the Chargers offered, I guarantee that if Rivers holds out until next year, he wont get half as much. He knows that.

What good would Rivers signing would have been?
---He would be a millionaire and a good chance to start his entire career in the NFL.
What bad can happen since he didn't sign?
---he has given up money he could have invested
---Mainly he has given QB Drew Brees another chance to be the long term starter of the Chargers. We all know the idea of competition; never give an opponent (or a rival) any extra chances. This could prove to be Rivers HUGE mistake.

There might be something to this -- I felt on draft day (and still do) that Rivers was not a top ten pick, and was definetly not the second best QB in this draft, so that makes sense to me. Don't get me wrong, Rivers is a solid player, but if I'm taking a QB that high I'd prefer he doesn't throw the ball like Dennis Eckersley.

eli wouldn't be in camp right now either if he was a bolt. this is a chargers issue - and will be until they get much better. who wants to come out of college and play for the bolts ? the chargers are a cheap outfit and the leaugue's worst at handling their draft position. :142lmao:

Well we don't really know what the Chargers did offer and how they offered it...we only have sports radio and news reports...

Maybe both parties are wrong...still sounds like The Chargers are being downright devious " IF " those incentives are true reports.

Ya know I thought The Mets organization were as sneaky and lying organization as they come, but The Bolts could be just as bad!

Word is getting around baseball what a crummy outfit The Mets are.
They purposely delay bringing up prospects until late in the season so that The prospects eventual arbitration dates down the road are delayed by a year or more.
They lied to the Met fans in signing Kaz Matsui and saying how great he was..when in all reality The Met organization was just interested in getting huge revenues from selling merchandise to The Japanese fans.

Archie Manning knew what he was doing for his son by keeping him away from The Bolts.

just one thing more...we know these players are getting sometimes too much money. 4bubbas reply is correct in moneys that can be used to pay other salaries.

I will give credit to the Spanos family/Chargers..they donated $ 1 million last year to The Fire Fund to help the relief in the San Diego community which is more important thatn any football stuff.

Maybe the team is still shell shocked from QB Cryin Leaf ! ? LOL

Pujo21,

Right!!!

Its easy for the fans to say "give every dollar in your pocket to sign all the players". It may be hard to believe but this is a business.
Look at Snyder from the Redskins. How much money has he blown to coaches and players. Where has it gotten him???
Stupidity in business will eventually break you.
