China Calls for Immediate Halt to War on Iraq
13 minutes ago Add World - Reuters to My Yahoo!

BEIJING (Reuters) - China, a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council, called on Thursday for an immediate halt to the U.S.-led war against Iraq (news - web sites) and a return to efforts to resolve the crisis peacefully.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan said the war was a violation of the U.N. charter and international law.

"We strongly urge relevant countries to immediately stop military action," he told a news conference without mentioning the United States by name.

"They ignored the opposition of most countries and peoples of the world and went around the U.N. Security Council to begin military action against Iraq," he said.

"This constitutes a violation of the U.N. charter and international principles," he said. "We hereby express our grave concern."

The strength of the statement surprised Chinese analysts who had anticipated a mild reproach that would keep Beijing's desire to keep its improving relations with Washington on track.

Jin Canrong, a professor of international relations at People's University in Beijing said before the official statement he had expected an expression of regret and hope for a resumption of diplomacy "in very hollow and rhetorical terms."

He had expected China, which like France and Russia pushed for a diplomatic solution in the United Nations (news - web sites), to "keep a low profile."

Earlier, in a rare move, state television broadcast live, with simultaneous translation, the address by President Bush (news - web sites) on the start of the war.

Other official news outlets, including the Communist Party mouthpiece People's Daily, ran the text of Bush's brief speech on their Web sites shortly after it ended.

State television also carried a later live broadcast from Baghdad by Iraqi President Saddam Hussein (news - web sites), also with simultaneous translation.

China has boosted security around foreign embassies in the past few weeks, partly for a two-week session of parliament that ended on Tuesday.

Extra guards were stationed near embassies, some with flak jackets, helmets and automatic weapons. Several roads were blocked off this week, including one near the Israeli embassy.

"They told us it is because of the international situation," said a diplomat from Spain, one of the countries which backed the U.S.-led attack.

The U.S. embassy has been cordoned off and streets near it closed to traffic since the September 11, 2001, attacks.

Let's hope once and for all this dispute completely dismantles and destroys the United Nations. I'm only half joking when I say it's too bad the terrorists didn't drive those airliners into UN Plaza instead of the two towers several blocks away. The UN is the most corrupt, ineffectual, government body on the planet. Gut it and send it's whores (diplomats) home. Now.

Right you Nolan

And The Frenchy Frogs are the most corrupt. They are afraid that when The Smoke clears that they will be exposed for breaking The U.N. Charters by giving these Chemicals to Iraq for Sweetheart Deals.

Noone should ever ever again forget what these humps have done.

Sneakiness is there Benchmark and always has.
Send them back there stinking Statue of Liberty. To me it is a replica of The Trojan Horse.

french are worried we are going to find out all their illegal dealings with Iraq.....when we do, there will be some hell to pay....

i agree with Nolan....this once and for all will rid ourselves of the UN....it is a joke....doesn't even attempt to enforce its own laws and just gives other countries a chance to impede on US sovereignty, affect our policies, raise anti-American sentiment, and tries to impede/obstruct the spread of freedom while the thugs in charge maintain their power....just a pack of liars and cheats

Hellah, I know you hate the Jews, but saying you know things for facts is a little overboard....i am sure we will try to keep Israel out of this but we can't take away their right to defend themselves if they are attacked.....i doubt they will make a move on Lebanon at this time

China thinks the US is a threat to their own imperialist policies (and we are -- would rather see a free Taiwan)....last thing they want to see is another demonstration of our power....of course they will disapprove...."diplomacy" doesn't work with them -- it just emboldens them...a show of force and a route of Iraq and a liberating of the Iraqi people will shut the Chinese up in a hurry

Why was the UN formed? To unify the allies and fight the Axis powers, right? The Axis powers were defeated in 1945.
Do we still need the UN?

We pay to much towards the UN. Cost us about 30% The rest of the world gets to share whats left.
A strong Nato, throw the French out would be a better choice.

talk to my folks last night, they said there were Jets going over Lousy(a village full of palistinens) and dropped bombs. Plus there was a report or article somewhere from a Isreali newspaper saying they are gonna rid palistinens out of Lebanon once and for all - if I can find it i`ll post it.

i can see where they wouldnt bomb beruit because of all the american franchises being there(a biggie is Cisco - headquarters of middle east operations) but Isreal has a thing for Lebanon. Hopefully they dont make any move at all....cuz if they do, then my parents are gonna come back here, and they are gonna live with me for some time...and yada yada yada...

Hellah:

As I have written before, I have the ultimate respect for your knowledge and work ethic, as well as sincerity.

However, there is NO WAY that Israel will invade Lebanon at this time. To do so would be catastrophic and would fracture the (underlying) support by Arab nations for the campaign agaisnt Iraq.

I believe Israel is a criminal nation and certainly does have territorial ambitions beyond its borders. There is also precedent for an invasion (1982). But their operations in Lebanon would likely be limited to targeted air strikes and so-called "defensive" attacks against targets they perceive as a threat. Israel has all it can handle right now with problems in the Palestinian Authority. To launch an invasion of any kind would put them at great risk and would certainly be opposed by the United States (not that it matters, since Israel basically controls American foreign policy in the region).

Of course, I welcome your feedback if you have any thoughts as to why Israel would invade Lebanon at this time.

Nolan - All I can say is ....I hope you are 100% right. Isreal destroyed Lebanon in the 70s by splitting the country in half - I dont want to see them destory it again. Especially with my family living there. Everyday though, they are doing something shady at the southern border of Lebanon...Isreali government is shit - and I hope they all die a painful slow death. fawk them...

nolan,i agree regarding lebanon

nolan,i agree regarding lebanon

i am not jewish, nor am i any kind of fanatical israeli supporter...

but, like israel or not, they are a democracy and our biggest ally in the region....

israel does have nuclear weapons, although they have never used them, even though gravely provoked...

saddam is on record as saying,"one of my biggest mistakes was not having nuclear weapons when going into kuwait"(to secure oil fields they believe are rightfully theirs)...and you have to understand that if the israeli`s hadn`t taken out that french built iraqi nuclear reactor in the 80`s,there would have been nuclear weapons thudding into israel during the gulf war,not poorly guided scuds....

about 3 hiroshima-sized nuclear weapons would pretty much effectively annihilate a small country like israel...

make no mistake,a substantial part of our decision to take out saddam is rooted in continued existence of israel....which is seen as being jeopardized by the one dictator in the region ballsy and crazy enough to try and annihilate them and precipitate some sort of holy war.....

the world is rife with black market nuclear processing material, and, some say, actual nuclear weapons may be available(the soviet union cannot account for all cold war nuclear weapons).....n. korea has already been caught secretly shipping missiles to terrorist sympathizer yemen on unmarked vessels...

if saddam`s nuclear rector had not been taken out prior to the gulf war, israel almost certainly would have been hit with nuclear weapons....thus bringing retaliatory strikes from israel....thus opening up the middle east region to a potential full scale arab-israli conflict fecking up a good portion of the world`s oil supply and possibly causing a global catastrophe....

it`s not hard(imo) to understand why we are doing what we are doing...the guy has proven he`s willing to push the envelope farther than your average despot.....and i think we see this scenario, even if held in check in the near future, playing itself out again in another few years....

the regime change and occupation i do see as a potential mess and may be impossible to sustain....

but,if you can`t assuredly get the knife away from jack the ripper, then maybe, you have to get rid of jack....

if anyone see`s fit to respond, please don`t quote my article....it`s there for everyone to see...g.l.

While it is no secret they do not like us displaying this power and it is evident that one scud was made in China I still say they are our ally in a distant way.Their 20 million Musilims have been told to cool it in China and there will be NO formal organized anti U.S. protest of any kind permited.Period. --and they WILL enforce it--however the press is given the freedon of print and they are not presenting us in any favorable light by any means.

the United Nations is about 80% useless, but I support their existance. Their UN peacekeepers/ soldiers that keep enforce the peace after long and bitter wars. Also during elections many times the UN are invited in to supervise the election, and then tell the World if it was carried out in a fair manner. The UN has many failings some recent disasters in Africa for instance, still their has been some accomplishments.

thanks

It worth emphasizing that the "Jewish state" was founded based on an anceint Biblical map, and to this date the "Jewish state" still refuses to declare its borders in favor of future expansion. There is nothing like this Biblical map that sends shivers among Arabs and Muslims, since its borders spans the occupied West Bank (including occupied East Jerusalem), occupied Gaza Strip, southern Lebanon, western parts of Jordan, and southern Syria including the occupied Golan Heights. Such deep fear was the prime motive behind the Palestinian and Arab rejection of the U.N.'s proposed partition plan in 1947.

Ever heard of the "Greater Isreal"??? It details occupying almost all the middle east...WHICH EXTENDS to Iraq. hmmmmm

Elvis - they are a criminal nation in every meaning of the word. They caused the war in Lebanon....and they STILL bomb Lebanon just because Palestinians live there. Southern Lebanon is a hellish place to live as the Isrealis just do as they please. They are more then a criminal nation....
