Three shooters, one described as a black 18-21yo, were seen fleeing the scene. Apparently, they shot 2-3 different guns into a second line parade in the Treme, which is a historic predominately black, low-income neighborhood west of the french quarter. Many current local musicians were raised in this neighborhood, and a few maintain residence there. This is the type of 'hood in which young uneducated males kill each other routinely. I am desensitized to the teen on teen violence at this point. Unfortunately, you will also read of stray bullets killing children, and other innocent bystanders, from time to time. Makes me shudder to think of it.
In this case, these animals opened fire on a crowd of 400, including elderly and children. Reports are 10-12 vullet wounds, none critical, with a few folks injured during the stampede.
I am in the Treme a couple of times monthly for work. Like I do at all troubled ( low-income predominately black)NOLA neighborhoods, I typically visit between 10am and 2 pm, which are known as the safest times of day. Looks like this episode occurred at 1:45pm, so I may have to rethink my strategy.
