After the game ended, Wickman and pitcher Paul Byrd became embroiled in a heated argument that nearly escalated into a fistfight.
?I don?t know why we?re struggling,? left-hander C.C. Sabathia said.
?I do know we need to start winning some games, put together a win streak and climb out of where we?re at.?
Where the Indians are is rock-bottom, if two of the team?s most veteran pitchers are ready to duke it out in front of their teammates as well as a group of reporters.
None of the reporters heard what began the argument, but some did hear Wickman challenge Byrd to fight him and others heard Byrd tell Wickman to remove the ice packs from his arm first.
The players eventually separated and moved in different directions, Wickman walking into the players? lounge and Byrd walking out of the clubhouse to board the team bus.
The brief but loud fracas came at the end of a week that included five losses in seven games, veteran left-hander Scott Sauerbeck being designated for assignment and shortstop Jhonny Peralta completely falling apart, both offensively and defensively, after being demoted from third to sixth in the batting order.
