Mariners vs. Athletics
March 18, 2019

by Tom Wilkinson

Mariners vs. Athletics Odds

The 2019 MLB regular season gets underway in Tokyo, Japan this week, as the Seattle Mariners visit the Oakland Athletics for a two-game series. The games will start very early on Wednesday and Thursday morning, so if you are going to bet these games make sure to make your wagers the day before.

The Mariners will be going with Marco Gonzales and Yusei Kikuchi as their starting pitchers, while the A?s will counter with Mike Fiers and Marco Estrada. Let?s look at this series that can be seen on ESPN.

Seattle Mariners vs. Oakland Athletics
Date and Time: March 13-14
Location: Tokyo Dome, Tokyo, Japan
MLB Odds: TBA
Probable Pitchers: Gonzales vs. Fiers and Kikuchi vs. Estrada
Mariners vs. Athletics TV Coverage: ESPN

The A?s and Mariners will meet in Tokyo for the second series between the teams since 2012. The focus for the fans in Japan will be on Ichiro Suzuki who is back in Japan. The Mariners are expected to put Ichiro in the starting lineup for this series because the games are taking place in Japan.

Ichiro may not play in any other games after the two in Japan. Ichiro is 45-years old and really not considered a player who will make the team after this series in Japan. The Mariners have not announced whether Ichiro will stay with the team, retire or do something else. Many Japanese baseball fans would like Ichiro to announce his retirement during this series, but that seems unlikely to happen.

?It?s going to be emotional,? Oakland manager Bob Melvin said to the media, ?At the end of the day, he?s on the other side and I know he can impact those games. He?s had quite the flair for the dramatic over his career, so I?m hoping he doesn?t come up in a situation that can really hurt us.?

The A?s are coming off a surprising season a year ago that saw them win 97 games. This will be the third trip for the A?s to Japan since 2008. ?I?m excited to go with all the guys that I care about,? third baseman Matt Chapman said to the media, ?It should be an incredible experience.?

Melvin said that the games in Japan will be different. ?The crowds are different. There are a lot of fun things and you?ll expand your horizons and understand that, internationally, it?s a little different than what we do here, and I think it?ll be good for them in the long run.? Melvin said to the media.

Starting Pitchers

The Mariners will be sending Gonzales in the opener. He ends the 10-year run of Felix Hernandez starting openers for the Mariners. He was 1-1 last season against the A?s with a 4.70 ERA in three starts. He will be opposed by Fiers who is making his first career Opening Day start. He was 12-8 last season with a 3.56 ERA.

The game on Thursday will see the Mariners send Kikuchi to the mound. He will be the first Japanese pitcher to open up his Major League career in Japan. He was 73-46 with a 2.77 ERA in eight seasons with the Seibu Lions. The A?s will counter with Estrada who had a miserable season last year for the Blue Jays, as he was 7-14 with a 5.64 ERA.

Key Stats

The Mariners are 2-6 in their last 8 games vs. a right-handed starter. The Mariners are 1-7 in Gonzales' last 8 starts. The Athletics are 4-1 in their last 5 games vs. a left-handed starter. The Athletics are 8-1 in Fiers' last 9 starts. The Under is 10-4 in the Mariners last 14 games vs. a right-handed starter. The Over is 4-1 in the Athletics last 5 games vs. a left-handed starter. The Over is 6-0 in the last 6 meetings in this series.

Mariners vs. Athletics Picks

I think the matchup between Gonzales and Fiers is a good one and I don?t see a lot of runs being scored, so I will go under the total at BetDSI in the game for Wednesday. I think the best choice for the Thursday game is to take the Mariners, as they look to have the edge with Kikuchi vs. Estrada.

Ichiro is big draw as A's, Mariners begin
March 18, 2019
By STATS LLC Editorial

Drums, trumpets, thunder sticks and, of course, coordinated songs, which even have dances to accompany them.

There's nothing quite like the atmosphere of baseball in Japan, an enormous reason why the Tokyo Dome will host Major League Baseball's 2019 opening series beginning Wednesday, featuring the Seattle Mariners and Oakland Athletics, rivals in the American League West.

"It's a carnival atmosphere," Athletics manager Bob Melvin noted after an exhibition game at the stadium on Sunday. "There's a lot going on that's different" from the United States.

The main draw for the 200,000-plus spectators who will take in the two-game series will be whether Ichiro Suzuki will be playing the last games of his decades-long storied career.

The 45-year-old Japanese superstar, considered by some the greatest Japanese position player of all-time and a sure-fire Hall of Famer, has broken camp with the Mariners on their 28-man roster after moving from the playing field to a special advisory non-playing role with the club early last season.

Seattle manager Scott Servais said that Ichiro will start Wednesday's opener but it remains unclear whether he'll make the 25-man roster once the team returns to Seattle.

"We're really taking it a day at a time," Servais said. "We're looking at the two games here against Oakland. He'll be available in those two games and we'll see how it goes."

His play as of late may not merit it, but his career accomplishments have earned him the opportunity to prove it on this stage in his home country. He is also slated to start the second game in the series before finding out his 2019 fate prior to the home opener on March 28.

"This is a great gift for me," Ichiro said through an interpreter. "I will treasure every moment here on the field. One week after this event, I will be reflecting back on these days, so I will make sure I remember every moment here in Japan."

The A's begin 2019 after unexpectedly surging to the AL's second wild card spot a season ago, thanks to a second-half run that shot them to 97 wins, topping Seattle in the process.

Now, they have a talented young collection of position players who can offset a questionable rotation led by first-time Opening Day starter Mike Fiers. The 33-year-old was acquired last August in a trade and, for now, is the ace.

"You're one of 30 guys to start a big league season, and that's really cool," Fiers told MLB.com.

Fiers was left off Oakland's postseason roster last season despite posting a 3.71 ERA over 10 starts. The year prior, he was left off of Houston's postseason roster during its run to a World Series title.

The A's brought him back on a two-year, $14.1 million deal in December to try and bolster a rotation ravaged by injuries over the previous 12 months.

"He was the first guy we signed back for a reason, and this is one of the reasons, so I know he's pretty excited about it, and he did a nice job for us last year," Melvin said.

The Mariners will also have a new face on the mound for Opening Day. Felix Hernandez, the longtime ace who has started every opener since 2008, has been relegated to the back of the rotation, and the opener honors will go to southpaw Marco Gonzales.

Gonzales posting a 4.00 ERA last season, though advanced analytics view his 166 2/3 innings more favorably than that.

"I don't know if it's really hit me yet," Gonzales said upon receiving the news earlier in March. "I'm trying to just take it one day at a time and try to prepare myself the best I can."

Ichiro keeps 'em guessing about future
March 18, 2019
By The Associated Press

TOKYO (AP) This is the Ichiro effect.

Richard Snitzer had never been to Japan. What finally drove the Japanese-American to travel here from his home in Hayward, California, was Ichiro Suzuki; not family ties, not pure wanderlust, but a chance to see a player he called ''simply the best.''

And get this. He's not even a Mariners fan, which he's advertised by wearing his A's jersey around the Tokyo Dome.

He'll be there Wednesday when Major League Baseball opens the 2019 season with Seattle facing Oakland to start a two-game series. The 45-year-old Ichiro is expected to play in both. What happens next? Ichiro isn't saying.

One thing is sure. It will be great theater.

''I'll have my phone ready to go, and I'll shoot and stand up and applaud when he bats,'' Snitzer said. ''I just hope he doesn't get the winning hit against the A's. If he hits a home run that doesn't affect the game, I'll be thrilled.''

A's pitcher Liam Hendriks probably spoke for both teams.

''We're just happy to be along for the ride,'' he said. ''I can't wait for the opening series when they announce Ichiro and hear that crowd.''

Chances are, most baseball fans in other places will be asleep when A's right-hander Mike Fiers throws the first pitch of the year - around 5:30 a.m. EDT.

That's OK, there will be plenty of time for everyone to catch up before the other 28 teams open on March 28 at Yankee Stadium, Dodger Stadium and points in-between. Plenty to see, too, in a season that will stretch to end of October - Bryce Harper now batting in Philly, the Boston Red Sox trying to repeat as World Series champions and more talk about changing how the game is played.

In the meantime, Ichiro slipped into Tokyo's Haneda airport on Friday under the cover of a gray and black cap pulled way down. He's been highly visible since then; at a rare news conference, showing off in practice with trick catches in right field, and signing autographs to fans lining the foul lines before exhibition games against the Tokyo Giants.

Almost the only shirts for sale in the Tokyo Dome are Ichiro models. And they're not cheap: between $35-45 for a T-shirt, $62 for a sweat shirt, and a baseball with No. 51 goes for $30.

''Yes, we are selling well because Ichiro is a man of effort,'' said Yu Takamiya, a vendor answering questions through his translator app.

Ichiro told reporters on Saturday that - based on spring training - he's lucky to be here. He hit .080 in Arizona, and he hasn't played a regular-season game in a year. He was 0 for 6 in two exhibition games against the Tokyo Giants. They don't count officially. But if they did, he's hitting .065.

''This is a great gift for me,'' he said a day after arriving. ''I will treasure every moment here on the field. One week after this event, I will be reflecting back on these days.''

A's manager Bob Melvin knows Ichiro well from managing the Mariners 15 years ago.

''There are certain guys that create that kind of buzz,'' Melvin said. ''He's used to it, but it's going to be a long few days for him. Once he gets on the field, that's when you just do your thing and insulate.''

Melvin recalled Ichiro's relentless training. It hasn't changed. Ichiro was alone running across the outfield in several practices in Tokyo.

''As far as playing and preparing, there was nobody better,'' Melvin said.

A's outfielder Stephen Piscotty, making his first visit to Japan, called Ichiro ''a master.''

''He still in control of his destiny here,'' Piscotty said. ''He's pretty special and it's an honor to be on the field with him. Obviously you look around, and you see how important baseball is in Japan, and Ichiro's a part of that.''

Other key parts of the upcoming season:

ROSTER RESHUFFLING

Bryce Harper was the biggest name to change places since last season, leaving the Nationals and signing a record $330 million, 13-year contract with Philadelphia. The Phillies were especially busy, adding J.T. Realmuto, Jean Segura, Andrew McCutchen and David Robertson. Also on the move were Manny Machado (Padres), Paul Goldschmidt (Cardinals), Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz (Mets), Nelson Cruz (Twins), Patrick Corbin (Nationals) and Josh Donaldson (Braves).

But another slow market for many free agents meant All-Star closer Craig Kimbrel and former Cy Young winner Dallas Keuchel didn't have jobs on the brink of a new season.

HIYA, SKIP!

New Toronto manager Charlie Montoyo quickly showed he's all for trying new strategy - he played a four-man outfield defense against Harper in spring training. There are six new skippers in the majors this year: Montoyo, David Bell (Reds), Rocco Baldelli (Twins), Chris Woodward (Rangers) and Brandon Hyde (Orioles) are doing this for the first time in the bigs, Brad Ausmus (Angels) has experience.

NEW RULES

Despite a lot of discussion, nothing major for this season. No prohibition on shifts, no pitch clocks, and no requirement for pitchers to face at least three batters until next year. No robot umpires for now. One change could affect pennant races this summer - no trades after July 31, so no more deals in late August for an extra player in the postseason.

REPEAT AFTER ME

It's been quite a while since a team won back-to-back crowns - the Yankees were the last to do it, taking their third straight title in 2000. Now, AL MVP Mookie Betts and the Red Sox will try to stop baseball's longest gap without a repeat champion. Clayton Kershaw and the Los Angeles Dodgers, meanwhile, will try to avoid becoming the first team to lose three straight World Series since star pitcher Christy Mathewson, famed manager John McGraw and the New York Giants fell in 1911-13.

OPENING NEXT

After the Mariners and A's leave Japan, they'll return to the United States to finish out spring training games. Then everyone is in action for regular season play on March 28. Among the matchups: Red Sox at Seattle, Baltimore at Yankee Stadium and Arizona at Dodger Stadium. Also, the Cubs will play at Texas - this will be the Rangers' last season at the park they opened in 1994 before moving into a nearby new home next year.

'Rookie' Kikuchi in spotlight in major league debut in Japan
March 16, 2019
By The Associated Press

TOKYO (AP) Talk about a pressure situation.

Just as he was adjusting to life in the United States, Yusei Kikuchi is back in Japan getting ready to make his major league pitching debut in front of a sellout crowd at Tokyo Dome.

From his new teammates, to his Japanese fans to his family and friends, everyone will be expecting Kikuchi to come up with a dominant performance when he takes the mound for the Seattle Mariners on Thursday in Game 2 of the season-opening series against the Oakland A's.

''I never thought I would be making my debut in Japan,'' Kikuchi said in Japanese. ''It's like a dream come true. It's a new season for the team and new start for me so I want to pitch my best.''

In January, Kikuchi signed a four-year, $56 million deal with the Mariners that incudes club options that could make it worth $109 million over seven seasons.

And if the pressure of opening the season in Japan wasn't enough, Kikuchi is following in the footsteps of American League rookie of the year Shohei Ohtani. The two players are graduates of the same high school in Iwate Prefecture in northern Japan.

Seattle manager Scott Servais said he didn't hesitate to give the 27-year-old lefthander such a big assignment.

''Early on in camp, it was easy for me to see he was more than capable of handling everything we could throw at him,'' Servais said. ''His ability to continue to attack the strike zone with all his pitches is really going to be important throughout the season. I see no reason why he can't go out here and have a really good outing his first time out.''

Servais has said Kikuchi's biggest challenge will be adjusting to a more grueling MLB schedule.

Teams in Japan only play a 144-game season compared to 162 in the majors and the longest travel time between cities in Japan is less than two hours by plane.

The goal is to keep Kikuchi in the rotation all season but the Mariners may limit his innings on occasions to help with that.

And when it comes to getting advice on adjusting to the majors, Kikuchi couldn't have a better mentor than teammate and veteran Ichiro Suzuki.

''My teammates, members of the pitching staff have all given me their kind input and Ichiro-san has also given me some advice,'' Kikuchi said at a press conference.

Just for the record, Ichiro made it clear that he wasn't telling his young compatriot what to do.

''I gave him advice because he asked for it, I didn't volunteer it,'' Ichiro said, drawing a big laugh from Kikuchi.

The Mariners have traded several notable veterans this off season while building a roster with younger prospects. Seattle general manager Jerry Dipoto is hoping Kikuchi will fit perfectly in his plans.

Last season, Kikuchi helped the Seibu Lions finish with the best record in the Pacific League in Nippon Professional Baseball when he went 14-4 and struck out 153 batters over 163-2/3 innings.

He has a career record of 73 wins, 46 losses and one save with a 2.77 ERA.

Kikuchi pitched Hanamaki-Higashi High School to Iwate's first national final at Koshien Stadium in the 2009 Spring Invitational. The following autumn, he met with representatives of at least eight big league clubs that were interested in signing him.

In October, six teams named him as their top pick in Japanese baseball's annual amateur draft, with the Lions winning his negotiating rights in a draft-day lottery.

Throughout his professional career, Kikuchi has established a reputation as Japan's hardest-throwing left-handed starter.

In addition to a four-seam fastball and a slider, he also throws a curve and a change, and has experimented with a split-fingered fastball and a two-seam sinking fastball.

Left-handers from Japan are a bit of a rarity in the majors. Kazuhisa Ishii enjoyed success with the Los Angeles Dodgers between 2002 and 2004 while Kei Igawa was a big disappointment for the New York Yankees over two seasons from 2007.

Oakland manager Bob Melvin knows Kikuchi will present a challenge for his young team.

''They kind of a have a home- field advantage here with Ichiro and Kikuchi,'' Melvin said. ''We've seen some limited video of (Kikuchi) so we know he's good...this will be our first taste of him so it's going to be exciting especially here at Tokyo Dome.''

Mariners top A's 9-7 in opener
March 20, 2019
By The Associated Press

TOKYO (AP) Ichiro drew all the cheers. Most everyone else on the Seattle Mariners did all the hitting.

A crowd that came to salute Ichiro Suzuki in his homeland saw Domingo Santana deliver the biggest hit at the Tokyo Dome, a grand slam that sent Seattle over the Oakland Athletics 9-7 Wednesday in the Major League Baseball opener.

Batting ninth and knowing he'd get two plate appearances, Ichiro popped up and worked a walk. The 45-year-old star took his spot in right field to begin the bottom of the fourth inning, then was pulled to another huge ovation. He was met with hugs from the Mariners on the diamond.

''The fans in Japan probably aren't used to the reception I got from my teammates, but it's not that unusual in the majors,'' Ichiro said.

Mariners manager Scott Servais said Ichiro will play in Thursday's final game of the series, but there is no guarantee he'll start.

''We certainly want to give him an opportunity to go out and play, but we also want to get some other guys in the game,'' Servais said. ''I understand everybody wants to see him go all nine innings. We're trying to do the best thing for the team and Ichiro understands.''

This marked the earliest opening day ever - the summer sport actually started on the last day of winter. No doubt, most fans in North America were sound asleep when Oakland's Mike Fiers threw the first pitch at 5:36 a.m. EDT (6:36 p.m. local).

A year after the Cubs' Ian Happ homered on the very pitch of the season, the ball again was flying.

Tim Beckham also homered as several Seattle newcomers excelled. Khris Davis, who led the majors with 48 home runs last year, Stephen Piscotty and Matt Chapman connected for the A's.

''It was great. It's a fun crowd to play in front of. Even the pregame stuff was exciting. I think everybody had a good time,'' Oakland manager Bob Melvin said.

A packed crowd of 45,787 was buzzing for its favorite star, sending cheers, chants and camera flashes for Ichiro bounding all around the park. Signs and Ichiro jerseys were plenty, too.

Ichiro became the second-oldest position player to start an opener, only a few months younger than Julio Franco was for Atlanta in 2004. Several of the players in this game weren't born when Ichiro began his pro career.

Ichiro is getting very near the end of a sensational pro career that began in Japan in 1992 when he was at 18. He stopped playing last May to become a Mariners special assistant - after totaling 4,367 hits on both sides of the ocean - and struggled in spring training this year.

Santana, one of many Mariners new to the lineup, had no trouble at the plate. His opposite-field grand slam capped a five-run burst in the third for a 5-2 lead and Beckham's drive in the fifth made it 9-4.

Beckham got three hits and scored three times. Also making a nice debut for Seattle were Jay Bruce, who singled for MLB's first hit of the season, and Edwin Encarnacion, who scored twice.

The Mariners won for the 12th time in 15 openers. They also beat the A's in 2012 when MLB last started in Japan.

Seattle starter Marco Gonzales hung in for six innings, allowing three earned runs and seven hits, and got the win. Felix Hernandez had started the last 10 openers for the Mariners.

Hunter Strickland pitched a scoreless ninth for a save in his first game for Seattle. Edwin Diaz, who led the majors with 57 last year, was traded with Robinson Cano to the Mets in the offseason.

Fiers, making his first opening day start at 33, was hit hard for three innings and took the loss.

NOT THIS TIME

After a lot of offseason talk about improved pace of play, the opener took 3 hours, 24 minutes. ... The Mariners had held opponents to no more than three runs in their past 12 openers, an MLB record.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Mariners: C Omar Narvaez got stung in the bare thumb on a fastball right down the middle after an early cross-up with Gonzales. Narvaez was checked by a trainer and stayed in. ... 1B Daniel Vogelbach was hit in the elbow by a pitch and kept playing.

Athletics: OF Nick Martini (sprained knee), who hit well after making his big league debut last season, is on the injured list for at least another week.

UP NEXT

Mariners: LHP Yusei Kikuchi makes his major league debut in his home country. The 27-year-old lefty starred for Seibu last season, then joined Seattle with a contract that could be worth $109 million over seven years. Kikuchi mixes a hard fastball with a tough, looping curve.

Athletics: RHP Marco Estrada makes his debut after signing with the A's. The 35-year-old was 7-14 with a career-worst 5.64 ERA last season for Toronto and was hampered by hip and back problems.

Ichiro takes with field with 45,000 voices in full support
March 20, 2019
By The Associated Press

TOKYO (AP) Talk about a serious home-field advantage.

Ichiro Suzuki had it on a night to celebrate all things Ichiro - ''Ichiromania'' in other words - as he started for the Seattle Mariners against the Oakland Athletics in MLB's opening game of the season.

About 45,000 voices in a sellout crowd on Wednesday at the Tokyo Dome chanted his name as he took his place in right field. The scene is likely to be repeated on Thursday when the teams finish their Tokyo series. That game may also mark and end for the 45-year-old Ichiro, though no one is saying.

''I thought it was amazing to see the crowd come out here for him,'' Mariners second baseman Dee Gordon said after a 9-7 win. ''This whole situation is pretty much for him and he deserves it.''

Ichiro provided his usual flair early, catching a ball behind his back during batting practice.

Cameras flashed and chants echoed all around the park when Ichiro came to bat in the third inning. But with fans eager to see him deliver, he popped up with a runner on second base.

He worked a walk in his second at-bat in the fourth and, after taking his place in the outfield for the bottom half, was pulled from the game. He trotted off to another huge ovation and was hugged by Seattle players in the infield.

''The fans in Japan probably aren't used to the reception I got from my teammates, but it's not that unusual in the majors,'' Ichiro said.

Mariners manager Scott Servais said Ichiro will play Thursday, but didn't say whether he'll start.

''We certainly want to give him an opportunity to go out and play, but we also want to get some other guys in the game,'' Servais said. ''I understand everybody wants to see him go all nine innings. We're trying to do the best thing for the team and Ichiro understands.''

Hundreds wore Ichiro jerseys - of different eras and colors - emblazoned with No. 51, and a military band played a Sousa march in the pregame ceremonies.

A half-dozen fans lined up just behind the third-base dugout and held up cards spelling out his name in Japanese. Another wore a shirt that read: ''Ichiro I believe - 3,090.''

A's manager Bob Melvin knows Ichiro from their days with the Mariners.

''Every time he comes to the plate, every time the ball is hit to him, there's going to be a lot of moments. A lot is going on that circulates around him.''

Ichiro went into the game hitting ninth - not exactly a vote of confidence - despite having 3,089 hits since joining Seattle in 2001.

Another fan was keeping count with his sign: ''Ichi-Meter, 3,089.''

And one sign had the clearest message of all: ''We Love You Ichiro.''

Japanese fans are hoping it's not the end, but they know it's likely. They also thought that when Ichiro played here in 2012 with the Mariners - also against the Athletics - and had four hits in one game.

He's had only 2 hits in 31 at-bats in spring training, including two exhibition games in Japan - perhaps the worst hitter anywhere this spring.

''Seven years ago it appeared he had played for the last time in Japan,'' Fumihiro Fujisawa, head of the Japanese Association of Baseball Research, told The Associated Press. ''I don't think anybody believed he would be active now.''

It may not last long. Neither the Mariners nor Ichiro are saying that happens next. But it seems likely he will not be on the Mariners' 25-man roster when the regular season resumes with a four-game series in Seattle against the Boston Red Sox.

He could be around, however, for two games against the San Diego Padres to end spring training in Seattle.

Japanese pitcher Yusei Kikuchi will make his major league debut on Thursday for the Mariners. It's his beginning and it could be Ichiro's end.

''Japanese fans secretly think that first game for Kikuchi might be the last one for Ichiro,'' Fujisawa said. ''We are afraid of that.''

Both managers said they are just fans on nights like this.

''There will be certain periods in the game here when you sit back and reflect and little bit, and certainly just watch,'' Melvin said.

Added Servais: ''It's exciting, it's fun for our team, it's fun for myself. What Ichiro has done is unbelievable. He's goes down in history as one of the all-time great players.''

Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Odds to win the college basketball national title:

2-1? Duke

7-2? Gonzaga, Virginia

4-1? North Carolina

10-1? Michigan

12-1? Michigan State

18-1? Kentucky, Tennessee

**********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Happy Opening Day, everyone!!!!

13) So far this spring. UNLV fired Marvin Menzies and Vanderbilt fired Bryce Drew, both after their third season at that school, after seasons where their best player didn?t play after Christmas. Here are the details:

? Menzies was 48-52 in three years at UNLV, 23-31 in Mountain West.
? Drew was 40-59 in three years at Vanderbilt, 16-38 in SEC.

By way of comparison, here is how another coach did in his first three years at his current job:

? Unnamed coach: 38-47 at School A, 13-29 in conference games.

In other words, if Duke had hired Mike Krzyzewski three years ago, he?d be fired by now.

12) A person who has money to burn bet $500 on the Baltimore Orioles to win the World Series this year at 1,000-1 odds. Orioles were 47-115 last year, so good luck with that.

11) How is it Opening Day and Dallas Keuchel and Craig Kimbrel are still free agents?

10) Coaching carousel:
? Alabama hired hoop coach Nate Oats, who 13 days ago signed an extension with Buffalo.
? Stetson hired former UCF head coach Donnie Jones.
? UNLV hired South Dakota State coach TJ Otzenberger.
? Jackrabbits then replaced Otzenberger with assistant coach Eric Henderson
? San Francisco promoted assistant Todd Golden to replace Kyle Smith as HC.

9) Alabama guards John Petty, Kira Lewis, Jr. and Dazon Ingram all announced that they?re transferring out of Alabama?s program; this was before the Crimson Tide hired Oats.

8) Eight different major league teams used a 4-man outfield at least once LY, all against left-handed hitters. Hitters that saw it the most? Lucas Duda and Joey Gallo (7 games). Overall, hitters were 10-37 (.270) when the defense had four OF?s.

7) Last year, 42 different major league players played 5+ different positions.

6) Random golf stat: 2018 European Ryder Cup golf team went 11-1 Thursday in the Match Play tournament in Texas. The guys on the American team went 4-5-2 (Rickie Fowler isn?t playing this week).

5) Teams with best win %age in Sweet 16 games (minimum 12 games):
? Michigan 13-3, last in 2018
? Oklahoma State 11-3, last in 2005
? North Carolina 27-8, last in 2017

? Kentucky 36-12, last in 2-18

4) Charlotte Hornets were 2-0 against the Spurs this season, first time they swept the season series with San Antonio since 1996-97.

3) Oakland A?s traded minor league IF Jesus Lopez, international signing bonus pool space to Toronto for 1B/DH Kendrys Morales.

2) Fernando Tatis Jr. will be 20 years, 85 days old on Opening Day; if he plays, he will be the youngest player to play on Opening Day since Adrian Beltre in 1999.

1) Today is Opening Day in baseball, always a day full of optimism- if you can?t be optimistic when you?re 0-0, when can you be? Not every team has realistic hopes of making the playoffs this year, but you never know. At this time last year, I had zero hope of the A?s making the playoffs, but they wound up winning 97 games!!! Enjoy the season.

LEADING OFF: Harper, champ Red Sox open, all 30 teams play
March 27, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Thursday:

FOR OPENERS

Bryce Harper, Mookie Betts, Mike Trout and everyone else is set to play, at last. All 30 teams are in action, with opening day on deck at Yankee Stadium, Dodger Stadium and ballparks in between. The forecast is pretty good in most places, with no snow or frosty temps expected, although rain is a possibility in Kansas City and Oakland.

Chris Sale starts for the World Series champion Red Sox when they visit red-hot Seattle - well, the Mariners have started out 2-0 after sweeping the A's last week at the Tokyo Dome.

CY AND SIGH

Jacob deGrom and Blake Snell get an early chance to defend their Cy Young Awards - first-time winners last year, they're pitching against the guys who were the runner-ups.

DeGrom (10-9, MLB-leading 1.70 ERA) starts for the Mets when they face three-time Cy winner Max Scherzer (18-7, MLB-high 300 strikeouts) at Nationals Park. Snell (21-5, 1.89 ERA) starts for the Rays vs. Justin Verlander (16-9, AL-best 290 Ks) and the Astros at Tropicana Field.

Since the Cy Young Award was first presented in 1956, only twice before have reigning winners opposed the second-place finisher on opening day the next season. In 1979, Ron Guidry (Yankees) faced runner-up Mike Caldwell (Brewers) and NL winner Gaylord Perry (Padres) went against Burt Hooton (Dodgers).

DEBUT YOU

Paul Goldschmidt (Cardinals), Manny Machado (Padres), Nelson Cruz (Twins), Michael Brantley (Astros), Robinson Cano (Mets), Billy Hamilton (Royals) and Yasiel Puig (Reds) play for the first time with their new teams. The Phillies show off a bevy of newly acquired All-Stars: Harper, Andrew McCutchen, Jean Segura, J.T. Realmuto and David Robertson.

Harper has five career home runs on opening day, tied with Albert Pujols and Ian Kinsler for most among active players. He'll take on Julio Teheran and the NL East champion Braves - Harper is 18 for 50 (.450) with a personal-high eight homers against the Atlanta right-hander.

AILING

Cleveland shortstop Francisco Lindor, surprise World Series MVP Steve Pearce, Reds star Scooter Gennett and aces Clayton Kershaw and Luis Severino are hobbled. Royals catcher Salvador Perez, Tigers pitcher Michael Fulmer and Diamondbacks outfielder Steven Souza Jr. are out for the year.

GOOD LUCK, SKIP!

Six managers will make their debut: Brandon Hyde (Orioles), Charlie Montoyo (Blue Jays), David Bell (Reds), Rocco Baldelli (Twins) and Chris Woodward (Rangers) are first-time skippers, while Brad Ausmus succeeded longtime Angels skipper Mike Scioscia.

FAREWELLS

Manager Bruce Bochy, who guided the Giants to three titles in five seasons, begins his final season when San Francisco plays at San Diego. ... The Rangers host the Cubs to begin the 26th and last season at their current ballpark. Texas moves next year across the street into a new stadium with a retractable roof. ... Longtime announcers Marty Brennaman of the Reds and Steve Blass of the Pirates, both 76, start their last seasons when Pittsburgh visits Cincinnati. The teams also end the regular season together in Pittsburgh on Sept. 29.

''I've always tried to live a life of anticipation, so I'm looking forward to it,'' Blass said. ''I know I'm going to miss it.''

THEY BLUE IT

The Rays are looking at using blue lights to tint the roof of Tropicana Field in hopes of giving the domed stadium a different look as well as making it easier for players to track flyballs. Plans to use them are pending approval by Major League Baseball, which is not expected to make a decision by opening day. Tampa Bay played an exhibition at Tropicana Field on Tuesday and turned on the blue lights for the national anthem, but not during the game.

Diamond Trends - Thursday
March 28, 2019
By Vince Akins

SU Play ON Trend of the Day:

-- The Athletics are 10-0 SU since May 31, 2018 at home off a game as a favorite in which they did not hit a home run.

SU Play AGAINST Trend of the Day:

-- The Mariners are 0-7 SU since Jul 28, 2018 after they played extra innings.

Hitter-Based Trend of the Day:

-- There is no hitter-based trend for Thursday. Here is one that is not currently active, but one that you may want to save in your personal trend file. In franchise history, the Dodgers are 16-0 as a road favorite after a game as a road favorite in which Justin Turner struck out at least twice.

Starter-Based Trend of the Day:

-- The Rays were 5-0 SU last season as a DOG with Blake Snell when they won in his last start against their opponent.

LEADING OFF: Knebel's decision, Morton faces former team
March 28, 2019
By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors Friday:

DAY OF DECISION

Corey Knebel plans to choose a course of action on his ailing right elbow, potentially sidelining a key part of Milwaukee's vaunted bullpen for the season.

The 27-year-old has a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament. He could have Tommy John surgery and return at some point next year, or try to rehab the injury.

''I've got all the cards on the table, and it's just, `Which one?''' Knebel said Thursday.

Knebel had 16 saves and a 3.58 ERA last season, plus a sparkling 0.90 ERA in nine playoff appearances. He was an All-Star in 2017 with 39 saves and a 1.78 ERA.

REMEMBER ME?

Charlie Morton, who won Game 7 of the 2017 World Series for Houston shortly after winning Game 7 of the AL Championship Series, faces his former team. Morton went 15-3 with a 3.13 ERA for the Astros last season, then became a free agent and signed a two-year deal with Tampa Bay. He will oppose Gerrit Cole (15-5, 2.88 ERA last year) at Tropicana Field.

''There's an element of emotion attributed to this start that wouldn't be there if I was pitching against a team that I didn't know on a personal level,'' the new Rays right-hander said. ''Whether or not it's a challenge or a benefit, I don't know.''

LA LONGBALLS

The Dodgers set a major league record by hitting eight home runs on opening day against Arizona, and try to keep up the power surge vs. Diamondbacks lefty Robbie Ray.

Joc Pederson and Enrique Hernandez each connected twice at Dodger Stadium as the team tied the franchise mark for homers in any game. Ray looked sharp in spring training, striking out 32 in 16 1/3 innings.

MARATHON MAN

Nathan Eovaldi throws his first pitch that counts since a Herculean effort for Boston in the World Series. Last October, he made relief appearances in the first two games against the Dodgers and then, after one day of rest, worked into his seventh inning and threw 97 pitches in Game 3, giving up a winning home run in the 18th. Eovaldi, who'd had two Tommy John surgeries, was saluted by the Red Sox for saving the bullpen and putting them in position to wrap up the title.

Eovaldi was rewarded with a $68 million, four-year deal. He'll start at Seattle against Yusei Kikuchi, who pitched well last week in becoming the first Japanese-born player to make his big league debut in his homeland.

HALO, THERE

Matt Harvey makes his AL debut when he starts for the Angels against the A's at the Coliseum. Harvey, the former Mets ace who helped reboot his career last summer in Cincinnati, signed an $11 million, one-year deal with Los Angeles in December.

Harvey will face Athletics slugger Khris Davis, who led the majors with 48 home runs last year. Davis homered on opening day last week in Japan and connected again Thursday in a win over the Angels.

Dodgers set opening day mark with 8 HRs in win over Arizona
March 28, 2019
By The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) Joc Pederson and Enrique Hernandez each hit two of the Los Angeles Dodgers' eight home runs Thursday in a 12-5 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Dodgers set a major league record for homers on opening day and tied the franchise mark for any game.

Hernandez, Austin Barnes and Corey Seager all homered in the fourth inning to chase Arizona ace Zack Greinke (0-1). Max Muncy, Cody Bellinger and Hernandez connected in the seventh for the power-packed Dodgers, whose pursuit of a third straight National League got off to a thrilling start.

Adam Jones and Christian Walker homered for the Diamondbacks, but their pitching staff's eight homers allowed also set a team record.

The Dodgers and Diamondbacks weren't the only ones going deep, either, as teams around the majors combined to set an all-time high for home runs on opening day.

Hyun-Jin Ryu (1-0) struck out eight over six stellar innings as Los Angeles' first opening day starter not named Clayton Kershaw since 2010. Kershaw's franchise-record streak of eight consecutive opening day starts ended due to left shoulder inflammation.

BREWERS 5, CARDINALS 4

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Center fielder Lorenzo Cain soared above the wall to rob Jose Martinez of a tying home run for the final out, lifting Christian Yelich and the Milwaukee Brewers over St. Louis.

With at least one Cardinals player in the bullpen already raising his arms to celebrate, Cain pulled back the pinch-hit drive by Martinez in right-center. A fired-up Cain flung the ball high into the air as the Brewers poured onto the field to celebrate.

Yelich got right back to work after winning the NL MVP award last season, putting Milwaukee ahead to stay with a three-run homer off Miles Mikolas (0-1) in the third.

Mike Moustakas and pitcher Jhoulys Chacin (1-0) also connected for the Brewers in a performance that looked a lot like their run to the NL Championship Series last October. Josh Hader retired the first two batters before Cain's play finished off the save.

Kolten Wong homered twice for the Cardinals, and Harrison Bader also connected.

Paul Goldschmidt went 0 for 3 with three strikeouts and a walk in his first regular-season game for St. Louis.

METS 2, NATIONALS 0

WASHINGTON (AP) - Robinson Cano homered in his first at-bat for the Mets and added a late RBI single, Jacob deGrom outpitched Max Scherzer as each struck out at least 10 in a sterling matchup between the winners of the past three NL Cy Young Awards, and New York edged the Bryce Harper-less Washington Nationals.

A day after signing a $137.5 million, five-year contract, deGrom (1-0) compiled 10 strikeouts with one walk and five hits in six innings, setting a major league record with his 30th consecutive start allowing three runs or fewer. The lanky righty topped runner-up Scherzer in Cy Young voting last season - and got the better of him in the win and run columns on this day.

Scherzer (0-1) was charged with both Mets runs in 7 2/3 innings, with 12 Ks, three walks and two hits.

PHILLIES 10, BRAVES 4

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Bryce Harper struck out twice in green Phanatic cleats in his $330 million debut and bowed to thousands of fans in No. 3 jerseys who gave him rousing standing ovations during Philadelphia's win over Atlanta.

Harper had the city electric in anticipation for his first game in Philly since he signed a $330 million, 13-year deal that was briefly the richest in baseball.

He went 0 for 3 with an intentional walk and failed to deliver a big hit - but no worries, the Phillies picked up the scoring slack. Harper's presence in the lineup helped blow the game open when the Braves walked the lefty slugger to load the bases. Rhys Hoskins followed with a grand slam off reliever Luke Jackson that broke open the game.

Phillies newcomer Andrew McCutchen hit a leadoff homer against Julio Teheran (0-1). Maikel Franco added a three-run shot against the defending NL East champions.

Aaron Nola (1-0) won despite walking five in six innings.

MARINERS 12, RED SOX 4

SEATTLE (AP) - Tim Beckham hit two of Seattle's three home runs off Boston ace Chris Sale, and the Mariners improved to 3-0 with a victory over the defending World Series champions.

The Mariners followed up their two wins against Oakland last week in Japan by rattling Sale (0-1) and knocking out the lefty that had dominated Seattle in the past. Sale was done after just three innings, while the Mariners were just getting started on their big offensive day.

Beckham did the most damage, hitting a solo homer in the second and following up in the third with a two-run shot. The infielder was hitless in 15 career at-bats with nine strikeouts against Sale before hitting his second and third home runs of the season.

Edwin Encarnacion added a solo shot off Sale as part of a four-run third. Ryon Healy and Domingo Santana both homered against Boston's bullpen as Seattle finished with five long balls.

Santana has nine RBIs in three games, the most in team history after the first three games of a season. He had 20 RBIs in 85 games last year with Milwaukee.

Marco Gonzales (2-0) was shaky early but pitched into the sixth and allowed three earned runs.

YANKEES 7, ORIOLES 2

NEW YORK (AP) - Luke Voit hit a first-inning homer, Masahiro Tanaka finally got an opening day victory in his fourth try and New York started the season with a win over Baltimore.

Voit launched a three-run drive off Andrew Cashner (0-1), and Greg Bird added a solo homer in the eighth, the first big flies for the Yankees a year after hitting a record 267 en route to 100 wins. Of course, that wasn't enough to catch the rival Boston Red Sox, who won 108 games and a World Series championship.

Tanaka became the first Japanese pitcher to start four openers, breaking a tie with Hideo Nomo. Tanaka (1-0) allowed two runs, one earned, and six hits over 5 2/3 innings.

Brandon Hyde lost in his managerial debut with Baltimore.

TIGERS 2, BLUE JAYS 0, 10 INNINGS

TORONTO (AP) - Jordan Zimmermann took a perfect game into the seventh inning, Christian Stewart hit a two-run homer in the 10th and Detroit beat Toronto.

Zimmermann, who pitched a no-hitter for Washington on the final day of the 2014 season, came close to bookending it - Hall of Famer Bob Feller threw the only no-hitter on opening day, for Cleveland in 1940.

This bid ended when Teoscar Hernandez reached on a two-out infield single. That was the only hit Zimmerman allowed in seven sparkling innings.

Niko Goodrum doubled off Daniel Hudson (0-1) to begin the 10th, and Stewart homered on an 0-2 pitch.

Victor Alcantara (1-0) pitched one inning for the win and Shane Greene finished for a save as Detroit won its opener for the seventh time in eight seasons.

Playing their first game under rookie manager Charlie Montoyo, the Blue Jays lost their eighth consecutive home opener - tying the third-longest streak in baseball history.

ASTROS 5, RAYS 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Justin Verlander outpitched Blake Snell in a rare opening day matchup between a reigning Cy Young Award winner and runner-up, helping Houston begin the season with a victory over Tampa Bay.

George Springer homered on opening day for the third straight year. Michael Brantley and Jose Altuve also went deep for the Astros against Snell (0-1), the AL Cy Young recipient who won 21 games and led the American League in ERA in 2018.

Verlander (1-0) allowed a leadoff homer to Austin Meadows before dominating a mostly young lineup featuring just one player - center fielder Kevin Kiermaier - who started for the Rays on opening day last year.

The 36-year-old right-hander, fresh off signing a three-year contract that added $66 million in guaranteed money for 2020 and 2021, limited the Rays to one run and three hits over seven innings before a crowd of 25,025 at Tropicana Field - Tampa Bay's 14th consecutive sellout for a home opener.

CUBS 12, RANGERS 4

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Javier Baez homered twice, Jon Lester won for the first time in his last five opening day starts and Chicago spoiled the debut of new Texas manager Chris Woodward.

Kris Bryant added a two-run shot for the Cubs, opening their fifth season under manager Joe Maddon after four playoff appearances in a row that included the 2016 World Series title.

Lester (1-0) went six innings to win his first opening day start since 2013 with the Red Sox.

Elvis Andrus and Nomar Mazara each hit a two-run homer for the Rangers in the 26th and final opener in their current ballpark. Mike Minor (0-1) made his first opening day start and permitted six runs on five hits over 4 2/3 innings.

ATHLETICS 4, ANGELS 0

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Reigning home run champion Khris Davis went deep for the second time this season, Marcus Semien added a solo shot and Oakland blanked Los Angeles for its first win after a pair of losses to Seattle last week in Japan.

Mike Trout singled and walked in his first game since signing a record $426.5 million, 12-year contract, and manager Brad Ausmus lost his Angels debut after taking over for Mike Scioscia.

Stephen Piscotty added an RBI double as the A's backed Mike Fiers (1-1), who lost in Tokyo last week in his first opening day start. Fiers allowed one hit in six innings. Three relievers completed a three-hit shutout that breezed by in 2 hours, 18 minutes.

Trevor Cahill (0-1) gave up four runs over six innings against his former team.

Albert Pujols went 0 for 3 with a strikeout as he began his 19th season.

TWINS 2, INDIANS 0

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Minnesota newcomer Marwin Gonzalez hit a two-run double in the seventh inning, Jose Berrios outpitched Corey Kluber and the Twins gave manager Rocco Baldelli a victory in his debut against Cleveland.

Berrios (1-0) set a Twins opening day record with 10 strikeouts. He allowed just two hits and a walk in 7 2/3 innings.

Taylor Rogers got four outs for the save, stretching his scoreless streak to 27 innings.

Kluber (0-1) hardly deserved defeat after retiring the first 14 batters he faced until Gonzalez drew a walk. Byron Buxton broke up the no-hit bid with a one-out double in the sixth.

The two-time AL Cy Young Award winner made his fifth straight opening day start. He yielded four hits in seven innings.

The AL Central champion Indians played without star shortstop Francisco Lindor and mainstay second baseman Jason Kipnis, both recovering from strained right calf muscles.

ROCKIES 6, MARLINS 3

MIAMI (AP) - Kyle Freeland allowed two hits and one run over seven innings in his first opening day start as Colorado beat the sloppy Miami Marlins.

Freeland (1-0), who had a breakout 17-win season in 2018, retired his first 11 batters before Starlin Castro lined a single. The only other hit the left-hander gave up was a pinch-hit home run by J.T Riddle leading off the sixth inning.

Neil Walker also had a pinch-hit homer in his first at-bat for Miami. Marlins teammate Jorge Alfaro homered with two out in the ninth.

Colorado's Nolan Arenado began earning his new $260 million, eight-year contract when he doubled to start the fourth and scored the first run off Jose Urena (0-1). Trevor Story homered, and David Dahl had three hits and scored twice.

REDS 5, PIRATES 3

CINCINNATI (AP) - Pinch-hitter Derek Dietrich connected for a three-run homer in the seventh inning and the new-look Cincinnati Reds rallied past Pittsburgh.

Playing their first game under manager David Bell, the Reds got starring performances from two players signed for backup roles last month. They also ended the game with a relief pitcher playing center field, a sign of Bell's openness to new ideas.

Jose Iglesias doubled twice and drove in a run. Jose Peraza's homer off Jameson Taillon (0-1) tied it in the seventh, and Dietrich put Cincinnati up 5-2 with his homer off Richard Rodriguez. Dietrich got a curtain call from the crowd of 44,049, the largest for a regular-season game at Great American Ball Park.

Reds newcomer Zach Duke (1-0) retired the two batters he faced. Cincinnati closer Raisel Iglesias came on in the eighth and gave up a solo homer by Corey Dickerson. Bell replaced him with two on in the ninth - another unconventional move. David Hernandez loaded the bases before retiring Dickerson on a grounder for his first save since 2017.

PADRES 2, GIANTS 0

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Manny Machado went hitless in his first game with San Diego but Fernando Tatis Jr. singled twice in his big league debut against San Francisco.

Wil Myers homered off Madison Bumgarner and added an RBI single in the start of a new era for the Padres, who popped above .500 for the first time since June 8, 2015.

The Padres signaled their intentions to move beyond the rebuilding stage when they signed Machado to a $300 million, 10-year contract early in spring training. Then they promoted Tatis, whose father played in the big leagues for parts of 11 seasons, giving fans some hope after years of futility. San Diego hasn't had a winning season since 2010.

Tatis became the youngest player with a multihit game on opening day since Milwaukee's Robin Yount in 1975.

Eric Lauer (1-0) threw six innings of four-hit ball. Bumgarner (0-1) struck out nine while allowing two runs and five hits in seven innings.

Kirby Yates pitched the ninth for a save.

It was the beginning of the end for Giants manager Bruce Bochy, who announced in spring training that he will retire at the end of this season, his 25th as a big league manager.

ROYALS 5, WHITE SOX 3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Brad Keller pitched two-hit ball over seven shutout innings, Adalberto Mondesi tripled twice and Kansas Royals held off Chicago after the start of their season opener was delayed nearly two hours by rain.

Eloy Jimenez went 0 for 3 with an RBI in his major league debut for the White Sox after signing a $43 million, six-year contract - a record high for a player under club control yet to appear in a big league game. The 22-year-old outfielder was nicked on the left toe by a pitch with the bases loaded in a three-run ninth.

With the sacks full again, Brad Boxberger retired Yolmer Sanchez on a line drive to deep right field to earn a save in his Kansas City debut.

Jorge Soler drove in two runs and Whit Merrifield scored twice for the speedy Royals. Merrifield extended his hitting streak to 21 games dating to last season and stole two bases - he led the majors with 45 steals a year ago.

Keller (1-0) struck out five and walked one to help the Royals improve to 18-33 on opening day.

Carlos Rodon (0-1) was charged with three runs - two earned - and three hits in 5 1/3 innings.

**********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Wrapping up a very busy Thursday??.

13) Purdue 99, Tennessee 94 OT? Vols trailed by 12 at the half; they were 4-13 on the foul line in the first half, 7-9 in the second, 3-6 in OT. Purdue was 16-33 on the foul line.

Second half of this game was outstanding, exciting basketball. Ryan Cline made 7-10 shots behind the arc; Tennessee was 12-24 on the arc, but made only one of last five. Wild game.

2011 Florida Gators were last team to play consecutive OT games in NCAA?s; Gators beat BYU in the Sweet 16, then lost to Butler in the Elite 8. Same results for Tennessee here.

12) Virginia 53, Oregon 49? Teams combined to go 18-58 on arc; Virginia led 30-22 at the half, but were down 3 with 5:30 left. Ducks scored only four points in last 5:44 of this game.

Virginia?s Kyle Guy was shooting 43.9% on arc coming into this game, but he was 2-11 here, and is now 5 for his last 31 over the last four games. They?ll need more from him Saturday.

11) Gonzaga 72, Florida State 58? Seminoles went 3-20 on the arc, were out-rebounded 45-36 and went down fairly meekly.

10) Texas Tech 63, Michigan 44? Not even close; Red Raiders thrashed Michigan here, holding Wolverines to 1-19 shooting on arc (starters were 0-14). Tech won 12 of its last 13 games; their next game is Saturday against Gonzaga.

9) Brewers 5, Cardinals 4? Lorenzo Cain ended the game by robbing Jose Martinez of a game-tying home run. Excellent catch.

If you like to play over/under on first five innings of a game, Thursday?s results: 8-7 under.

8) Dodgers 12, Diamondbacks 5? Dodgers hit eight home runs, a record for Opening Day.

7) Coaching carousel:
? Niagara hired Patrick Beilein (John?s son) as its coach.
? Southern Illinois promoted assistant Bryan Mullins to head coach.
? Appalachian State named Dustin Kerns coach.

6) Astros 5, Rays 1? George Springer homered on Opening Day for the third year in a row.

5) Teams with five different Opening Day starting pitchers the last five years:
White Sox, Reds, Brewers, Padres.

4) Tigers 2, Blue Jays 0 (10)? Excellent pitching duel between Zimmerman/Stroman was decided in extra innings when Christin Stewart homered for Detroit.

3) Mets 2, Nationals 0? Robinson Cano drove in both runs to back up a brilliant six innings tossed by Jacob deGrom.

2) Mariners 12, Red Sox 4? Seattle treated Chris Sale like a pi?ata, getting seven runs in three innings against him. Mariners won two games in Japan, are off to a 3-0 start.

Edgar Martinez was in the ESPN booth for part of this game and Alex Rodriguez did a great job of picking his brain about hitting-related things. Obviously they played together for several years and A-Rod has a lot of respect for a guy who was a seriously tremendous hitter.

1) Reds 5, Pirates 3? Derek Dietrich hit a pinch-hit, 3-run homer in the 7th inning, as Cincinnati came from behind and won its opener.
