College baseball? the one sport I win consistently that allows me to piss it away in other sports.

2014 Season Record: 76-64 for +26.39 units
2013 Season Record: 119-105 for +47.52 units
2012 Season Record: 97-89 for +7.51 units
2011 Season Record: 75-66 for +13.65 units
2010 Season Record: 110-100 for +9.85 units
2009 Season Record: 69-56 for +17.85 units

Sat out the first couple of days taking it in, starting off today with:

Texas -115 (@ Rice) for 1 unit ? Like the experience in starting pitching the Longhorns have today in Chad Hollingsworth. Rice is going with a Austin Orewiler who has potential but didn?t pitch at all last year.

Thanks OS.

1-0 last weekend, for Friday and the start of Weekend #2:

Houston -150 (vs. Bama) for 1 unit - Cougars have advantages all around over the Tide. Think the starting pitching matchups for games 1 & 2 are really favorable for them. Bama's best chance for an upset win is likely on Sunday due to the starting pitching matchups.

QUICK HITS ON No. 20 ALABAMA

Alabama is ranked as high as No. 20 in the nation and is among the nation's Top 25 in two of the five major polls. The Crimson Tide is coming off a 3-0 weekend where they swept Maryland-Eastern Shores in a weekend series.

OFFENSIVE OUTLOOK
Alabama is hitting .364 as a team, led by Casey Hughston's .846 average through three games, where he went 11-for-13 with six runs scored and eight RBI.

Mikey White followed with a .600 average and Kyle Overstreet hit .545 with a team-leading 10 RBI.

Alabama was 8-for-8 in stolen bases and committed just one error for a .991 fielding percentage in its three games played.

ON THE BUMP

Alabama pitching didn't allow a run in three games as all three starters earned a win. RHP Will Carter went 7.0 shutout innings with six strikeouts, while LHP Taylor Guilbeau went 6.0 innings with seven strikeouts and RHP Geoffrey Bramblett struck out three in 6.0 scoreless frames.

Out of the pen, the Crimson Tide used six pitchers with RHP Ray Castillo earning the team's lone save with five strikeouts in 3.0 shutout relief innings.

HOUSTON ON THE BUMP

On the bump, Houston starters Andrew Lantrip - who was named to the American Athletic Conference Honor Roll as well as Jake Lemoine, combined to throw 10.0 shutout innings vs. the Minnesota in their first starts of the year. The Friday-Saturday due struck out 11 and allowed seven scattered hits in their outings.

Earning wins were Lantrip, Lemoine and junior Bubba Maxwell, who was the pitcher of record when the Cougars earned the walk-off win in the ninth on Sunday vs. the Gophers.

Freshman reliever Seth Romero made his debut and tossed 4.0 innings in relief last Saturday to earn his first save of this collegiate career, while senior Taylor Cobb countered that on Wednesday to earn his first save of his Houston career vs. Texas Southern.

Houston's pitching staff has held opponents to a .220 average, while compiling a 2.25 ERA in four games played. The Cougars have fanned 26 in 36.0 innings.

TCU baseball begins tough stretch

After an undefeated opening home stand, the TCU baseball team will travel to Arizona State for a three-game series against the Sun Devils this weekend.

First pitch Friday is set for 7:30 p.m. at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

TCU, ranked as high as No. 1 in the five major polls, beat UT Arlington 4-1 Tuesday night after sweeping Southern Illinois to open the season. The Frogs (4-0) outscored the Salukis 32-4 in three games and have allowed only two earned runs in 36 innings.

Preston Morrison, who tossed seven scoreless innings in TCU?s season opener, will start Friday. The rest of the Frogs? opening weekend rotation of lefties Tyler Alexander on Saturday and Alex Young on Sunday will also stay the same.

Center fielder Cody Jones is batting .600 (9-for-15) from TCU?s leadoff spot. Freshmen Evan Skoug and Connor Wanhanen are tied for a team-best five RBIs.

But the Frogs will get their toughest test of the young season against the nationally ranked Sun Devils (3-1), who check in as high as No. 9.

They took two of three games against Oklahoma State ? another ranked team ? last weekend and beat Oklahoma 7-4 Wednesday night.

Colby Woodmansee is hitting .474 with a pair of homers and five RBIs to lead the team. The sophomore shortstop has done his damage from the back end of the lineup, batting eighth for the first two games and seventh in the last two.

Left-hander Bret Lilek, who will start Friday, threw 4 2/3 innings, giving up two earned runs and walking four Feb. 13 against OSU. ASU won 4-3 in 10 innings with closer Ryan Burr earning the win. Another lefty, Ryan Kellogg, will start for the Sun Devils on Saturday.

The junior right-hander Burr set the school career saves record (26) Wednesday in two scoreless innings against OU. Burr also closed out a 7-4 win over OSU on Sunday.

For TCU, the ASU series will mark the beginning of a grueling stretch between now and the start of Big 12 play on March 12, against Baylor.

The Frogs host Cal Poly for a series next weekend, and then host Rice for one game the following Tuesday. After that, they?ll head to Dodger Stadium for games against USC, UCLA and Vanderbilt, the defending national champion. A Tuesday game at Loyola Marymount on March 3 will wrap up TCU?s stay in Los Angeles..

TCU at Arizona State
Friday, 7:30 p.m: TCU RHP Preston Morrison (1-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. ASU LHP Bret Lilek (0-0, 3.86)

Saturday, 2 p.m: TCU LHP Tyler Alexander (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. ASU LHP Ryan Kellogg (1-0, 5.40)

Sunday, 1:30 p.m: TCU LHP Alex Young (1-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. TBA

The Sun Devils will have one of the best one-two punches in the country on Friday and Saturday with Brett Lilek and Ryan Kellogg on the mound.

After Lilek and Kellogg, things get dicey.

Going with Arizona State tonight -110
if they win will stop, if they lose will play them again Sat.

Good Luck this season Mr. Poon !

Good info to share IE, thanks for that. I like ASU in Game #2 but going the other way in today's tilt. Adding:

TCU -110 (@ ASU) for 1 unit - ASU is a decent squad and had an impressive first week, but this price for TCU's starter Morrison won't happen often so I'm going to take advantage.

Miami Hurricanes, Florida Gators primed for early season baseball showdown
BY JESSE SIMONTONMIAMI HERALD WRITER
GAINESVILLE
It?s the heart of winter ? even in Florida ? but the college baseball season is already heating up.

Despite chilly conditions, UF and Miami, a pair of top 10 rivals, will tangle this weekend in a pivotal early-season series.

The two powerhouse programs, jockeying for state supremacy, will kick off a three-game set Friday night at 7 in McKethan Stadium, with Hurricanes ace Andy Suarez (0-0, 3.60 ERA) taking the mound against Gators right-hander Logan Shore (1-0, 0.00 ERA).

?This is [a series] where you find out where you?re at and you get some questions answered normally when you play [Florida],? UM coach Jim Morris said.

?It?s a challenge to go up there and win the series, but that?s what the goal is.?

Lately though, the No. 8 Hurricanes (4-1) haven?t had much luck accomplishing that objective.

Last season, Miami notched its first series win (two of three) over Florida since 2008, as the No. 6 Gators (4-0) have won 17 of the past 21 meetings.

Florida ended UM?s season three consecutive years from 2009-11, and both teams expect the intensity level to ratchet up for a meeting a week into the 2015 campaign.

?There?s definitely a lot of buildup for the series,? UF left field Harrison Bader said.

?Miami is a really big rival, so getting the chance to play them is a lot of fun. There?s always a lot more fans that come out and support us. It will be an all-out warfare, for sure.?

The matchup pits UF?s armada of arms against UM?s big bats, but both teams are more balanced than a year ago.

Bader, a junior off to a torrid start (9 for 15 with six extra-base hits and 14 RBI), has strengthened the middle of the Gators? lineup, while the Canes? pitching staff has been stabilized by moving lefty Thomas Woodrey into the rotation.

?I know they?re known for their offense going into this season, but their pitching is pretty good, too,? UF coach Kevin O?Sullivan said.

?They got a guy named Suarez. ?. He?s one of the best left-handed pitchers in the county.?

Both teams have opened the 2015 season with offensive outbursts, with UF outscoring opponents 50-8 with seven home runs and a team ERA of 1.25.

Miami suffered a midweek loss to Florida Atlantic, but the Canes tallied 53 hits (22 extra-base knocks) in its four-game sweep against Rutgers.

Now, the two rivals are eager to measure themselves against increased competition.

?It?s a great series to start the year off,? UM third baseman David Thompson said. ?They?re a good team and it?ll be a real good test for us.?

Said O?Sullivan: ?Obviously the weekend is important to a lot of people. Our fans, their fans, their program, our program. But the fact of the matter is it is our fifth game of the year. We?ve got 56 of these things, so I think it?ll be a good barometer of where we?re at, but it?s certainly not going to be an indication of where we?ll be come the end of the season.?

Thanks for sharing Shawn. Will be looking to potentially play Florida in Games 2 & 3 of that series if the prices are similar to what they were today. Miami's pitching drops off after their ace.

Great start!!

Some brutal weather yesterday..snow in Athens Ga...30's in Gainesville.

One of the kids I coached all thru LL All Stars is starting as a freshman for N IL.

They're at Texas Tech this weekend and he texted me that their pitchers were both sitting 92-94. First two games he goes 4-8, even though they got shutout in both games. Very proud of him.

Keep up the good work. you are probably not missing our weather.

Thanks OS.

RRC - good to hear from you and that's awesome that kid is getting playing time as a true frosh. Looking at NIU's schedule I see they play at UIC a couple of times, Chi State and Purdue, hopefully you can see a couple of his games this year.

As for the weather, definitely better out here not going to lie. If it snows it is typically gone within a day or two as the temperature will pop up into the 50's even during the winter here.

For anyone that's interested in the sport, www.d1baseball.com is a site to bookmark. Use to just be a central place to get scores and links to schools' sites. They did a revamp this year and brought in some of the few journalist that cover the game and its a real comprehensive site now with commentary, weekend previews and much more.
