YTD: 13 - 7 - 1 = +5.50 units

ho hum day goin 1 - 1 yesterday...had a hard time finding lines....

today's plays and cut and pasty write - ups:

1) St Bonaventure -2 over BYU ( 2 units)

Led by Mike Gansey's career-high 27 points and a solid defensive effort, the Bonnies advanced to Monday's title game against BYU, with a 21-point whipping of Michigan. Freshman guard Ahmad Smith poured in 16 points, followed by junior point guard Marques Green's 15, as the Bonnies cruised to victory. After leading the nation in three-pointers last season (10.5 per game), there was no reason to think that things would change this year. Well, they haven't, as the team has already amassed 21 treys in the first two games. Gansey was a red-hot 5-of-5 from behind the arc against Michigan. With Green and Smith adding to the scoring deluge for St. Bonaventure, this is a team that could actually match last year's record of 17 wins.

watch for those three's!!!!!

2) GONZAGA - 4 ( 1 U) over UTAH

Starting forward Trace Caton had a less-than-impressive showing for the Utes, scoring just one point, pulling down three rebounds and handing out three assists in only 30 minutes of foul-plagued action. Always the disciplined team, the Utes registered 15 assists against 12 turnovers, while Southern Utah turned the ball over 15 times on the night and had just one player score in double figures. Utah had a tough time out of the gates in their first real action of the 2002-03 campaign, hitting only 32.3 percent from the floor, including a 3-of-17 performance from beyond the arc. Things changed in the second half, however, as the Utes concentrated their efforts a little closer to the basket, converting 51.9 percent from the field while attempting only 10 shots from long range.

3) KENTUCKY - 7 vs ARIZ ST ( 2U)

Donnell Knight, who registered his third career double-double effort with a team-high 15 points and 12 rebounds, helped the Sun Devils generate an 11- point halftime lead, that quickly dissolved into single digits as the second half progressed against Morehead State last week. In fact, the Eagles actually had a chance to tie the game in the waning moments after a Sun Devil turnover, but a last-ditch three-point attempt was off the mark, as Arizona State held on for the three-point win. Tommy Smith and Ike Diogu also scored in double figures for the Sun Devils in the contest, contributing 11 and 10 points, respectively. Although he shot just 2-of-7 from the field coming off the bench, Kenny Crandall added five points and a team-high five assists in the victory as well. The Sun Devils finished the game shooting 40.7 percent from the field, but converted only 1-of-12 from behind the three-point line. Curtis Millage will still be watching from the sideline in this contest. The team's second-leading scorer from a year ago (13.5 ppg) will not play because of eligibility issues with regards to his academics.

Without Millage able to give the Sun Devils a lift, and based on the performance that they gave against a team like Morehead State last week, it appears as though Arizona State is overmatched in this contest. Expect the Wildcats to prevail quite easily and advance in the winner's bracket.

4) INDIANA - 4 first half ( 2 U)

The biggest difference with the Hoosiers, a team that played more games at neutral sites than they did at home where they were 10-1 last season, is that they are without their star from a year ago, Jared Jeffries. The team's scoring leader at 15.0 ppg and top rebounder with seven and a half boards per contest, bolted early for the NBA, leaving his teammates to defend the fort in Bloomington. Assuming the leadership role for Indiana will be guard Tom Coverdale, who is the only other player to have averaged double-digits scoring in 2001-02, dropping in 11.9 ppg. Coverdale, who shot 41.7 percent from the field, was a valuable asset when it came to distributing the ball, handing out a team-high 178 assists. Kyle Hornsby is another experienced starter, returning after scoring just under eight points per contest, while Jeff Newton, who started one three games last year and scored 8.1 ppg, also assumes more responsibility. Coming off the bench, coach Mike Davis will utilize A.J. Moye as a spark, after he shot close to 48 percent from the floor last year. Indiana, the defending Big Ten Conference Co-champion and national runner-up, was deadly from the perimeter a year ago as it drained a school and league-record 270 three-pointers.

6) Duquesne - 4 ( 2 u)

After facing arguably the Big East's top team, Duquesne will square off against one of the conference's weakest squads tonight. While Forney and Njoya are not bona fide stars, they are both solid performers who put forth consistent efforts. Expect the Dukes to give the Steel City crowd plenty to cheer about.
