I am going to purchase a new computer system as I listened to SPOCK and decided throw out my computer out the window.....

This is what I am looking at....

The cpu will be primarily used for email, internet, excel, and wordperfect. I hardly play games online so the video card is of little importance in my search for a good system.
Would appreciate some thoughts if any of you have some experience with a similar setup.....

THANKS

If those uses are your requirements then the best advice would be to not over-spend on a machine, plain and simple. The most basic machines will do all you are asking at very good speeds. You have to consider how you get on-line as well and what you will be doing with it in the future. Excel and word perfect files do not take up much hard disk space, gaming does so if your not playing games on-line or otherwise then a gigantic hard drive is not a requirement, nor is a super fast processor. If you get on-line with a dial up connection then again speed is not a big issue on your end. Many desktops on low-price range will do more than what you are asking. You can save a ton by purchasing a machine with a Pentium 3 as most places are clearing them out to make room for the newer faster Pentiums. My desktop is still a Pentuim 2, mostly my 2 and 3 year old use it, but I do as well sometimes, when I am not on the laptop. My only other advice is not to skimp on memory, the more the better.

If you have any specific questions about certain machines I would be more than happy to help.

Thanks Penguin,

The reason for the 100GB HD is due to the fact that I download numerous songs that I copy onto a CD(burner). I just want to have a decent system that will be good for the next 5-7 years, so flexibility is important. I have always purchased Pentium's and this would be my first Athlon cpu, do you have any thoughts on them? Also, would it be wise to get a bigger cooling fan?

Thanks Bud

all is good here......well, at least *partially* good. have half of a closing on the home improvement loan on Tuesday, but they are gonna hold out 13K of it until January when my *title search* comes up clear again :( ..... at least i'm getting enough to do most of the remodeling necessary to get a ton more for the downstairs apartment :D (Brad decided to stay in Phoenix to try and make things work, so it's up to me now to get the place in tip top shape) It's quite likely he'll be making the SuperBowl trip tho!!

as far as the puter goes...not that what you are looking for means much to a puter idiot like myself, but the BEST advice i could give you is WWWAAAAAIIIIITTTTTT!!!!!! I heard you are getting a Sam's Club in Toronto in the near future/future, and you can't beat that store for puter prices :D

Athalon processors do not run to the advertised speed COMPARED to a Pentium, but they are good equipment nontheless. I always suggest a bigger cooling fan for EVERY machine, not because overheating is so much of a common problem, but that it is usually a disaster when it happens. I also would ditch the DVD option, I never really understood why a desktop has a DVD in the first place, I mean how many people watch a movie on their desktop? I know you can hook it to the TV, but focrying out loud shell out the $69 at Wal-Mart and just buy a cheap one for the tv. Sorry bout the rant there. Otherwise I see no problem in buying an Athalon processor for the applications you are interested in, and it is a good idea to get a solid CD burner if you download music for that purpose.

Good news Annie....Say hi to the kids for me....

At Best Buy/Future Shop this system runs for about $1399.00 CDN
plus tax(15%).... I have a friend that will build this system for me for about half the price so I am saving $ there, just wondering if I should add or take away components of the system...

Thanks

C U soon!!

I have cable access as well so I know what you mean about the fax modem being useless, as far as mother boards I would love to sound like I know what I am talking about on that one, but I would defer that question to your friend who builds computers. Components and software I can help with, but I have never actually built a machine, God knows I have replaced enough stuff on my computer, but never started from scratch.

One more thing, check with him about the itegrated sound card, if your into music that is something you may want to upgrade later and if it is part of the motherboard (intergrated) you can't update it, at least not easily.

When I bought my system....

P4 2.4GHz Norwood, 533MHz Bus CPU <~~there`s a 400 and 533

Gigabyte 8IHXP Motherboard - 478 socket, 6 PCIs, 1 AGP(4x) 4 RIMM sockets, built in LAN and Sound

Thats about it. I put back my burner, DVD player, and 2 HDs. For the new AMDs and P4....you`ll need a newer power supply

I veryyy happy with my P4...everything is smooth....havent experienced any choopiness or nothing.

for internet purposes and basic use of excel and word etc. Emachines shud be more than sufficient ..

I have also heard that the eMachines have a very very heavy CPU which makes it very hard to lift up .. figure it will last in ur room more than the earlier one did ..

btw if u need help in lifting it up to throw it outta the window please call me

Cheers !!!

Just my opinion, but every E-Machine I've ever opened up has had cheap components. My suggestion would be to let your friend build your system, keep it generic, stick with NVidia for your video, overspend on RAM.

I rebuild my system about once a year, sell off the old parts, buy new and I don't lose too much in the process. I always buy processors with the best value, which right now means something in the Athlon 1600-1800 range, I found one for $53 brand new, matched a MB for $74 that included NVidia chipset built-in. Buying the newest and greatest is v-e-r-y expensive and useless for the most part unless you're a big time gamer.

Like I said, just my opinion.
