Computer is running super slow and it won't open Norton Anti-Virus when I try to get it opened. Will run every other program, but it's like they are in quicksand. Op system is Windows XP, 512 memory, 65 GIGS free, really not sure what the problem is..any help would be appreciated.

Hit Ctrl Alt Delete:

See what other programs are running in the background. If you download lots of music, or media, you could be loaded down with spyware.

Also, run msconfig when you start your computer and see what programs your system is automatically running when you boot up. This may solve a lot of the problem.

The problem could be a lot of things...

First thing I would do is back up everything of importance to you.

Second I would run disk defragmenter and see if any problems arise, most likely you have a problem with you hard drive or a virus.

Lastly if this does not find any errors I would format the hard drive and reload XP back to factory. If this is a name brand computer ex. Dell, IBM, etc. you should have recovery software.

Escrow and Stomie- Thanks for the feedback, appreciated.

I run Ad-Aware every morning, so spyware isn't the problem. I also had previously configured my start-up to run only the necessary programs.

Ran the defrag and it had no problems. Installed Microsoft Publisher last night, trying to uninstall it now, which is taking 30 minutes to do.

Does this computer problem correspond with a recently changed icon or avatar in your current window?

How about print driver problem?

Spoolsv.exe = CPU hog Possible Cause: Print job still in que Suggested Fix: Cancel print job Step by Step: 1. Go to Settings>Control Panel>Printers 2. Locate pending print que under the documents column. 3. Double click on printer to pull up spool que. 4. Right click on first job and select cancel. Result: This should cancel the hung print job and free up the CPU. Typically this is the result of an incompatibility between the print job source and the printer driver. If you record the source of the job and the desired printer, you may be able to find out from the driver distributer where the conflict is originating-- it might be as simple as a font!!

Hoops, this is the same problem I had with my system just a few weeks ago. I couldn't open my Norton AV either and it turned out I had a virus(es) that really jacked up my computer and I had to reformat everything.

Go to Add/Remove Programs and see if you are able to remove the software and then reinstall it.

Sounds very much like a virus, and worse yet, sounds like the kind that tries to hide from virus detectors. Sometimes this kind eats up system files on the hard drive, especially a fear since your drive is balking at uninstalling MS Publisher. Those are usually in the Sobig and Bugbear family.

If it is one that is hiding from your virus software, you can detect by scanning with a different virus program than you usually use. AVG is free and Kaspersky has a trial version that have both caught viruses for me that Norton missed. I find McAfee worthless, so don't bother with that. You can't run more than one virus program at a time, so disable your current one before trying a new one. Also, Symantec has a bunch of free virus-specific removal tools, so if you can narrow it down, try running a series of these and it may catch it. here's that link:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/tools.list.html

May need to reformat your drive & reinstall XP from scratch, but that is the nuclear option and a huge PITB. First, since you use XP, you might also try to restore to an earlier period but that won't get rid of the virus and won't help if system files are damaged already.

Hoops,

I can pretty well say that you have a virus, what I would try first is going to this site and do a free virus scan, but be prepared this could take awhile and you may have to do this 2 or 3 times.

Good luck,

Box,

Go to start, then click run, then type in msconfig, then enter
now a screen will come up click on the startup tab, you will see all the programs that are starting when you boot windows, (they will have check marks by them) if you don't want them starting and using your ram memory up then uncheck them this help your bootup and let your computer run faster, one note, when you bootup next time it will say that you are using selective startup, just click the box that says don't show me this next time (you" ll get the idea.)

Good Luck,
LL

Box,

Go to the startup tab at the top, that will open up what is starting with your computer, uncheck what you don't want, may want to make a note of what you uncheck in case you accidentaly uncheck one you need.

good luck, let me know if I can help.
