computer question (I MAC)

I have never logged on to a Apple before. Friend gave computer to me. First off all the desktop icons etc. are in Spanish, is there a way of changing system over to English?? I would need step by step instructions, again have never used Apple.

Also is there a way to do something similar to Windows (disk defrag) to clean system up??
