AFC Contenders:

1.Oakland--other than that midseason 4 game slump, its hard to argue against them
2.Tennessee--hot as any team in the league right now. If they weren't so banged up, I'd consider them higher than Oakland
3.Pittsburgh--this isn't an overreaction to Monday's nights beating of Tampa. That was what the team has been capable of doing and they finally showed it. The defensive #s the past 4 weeks for the Steelers are very impressive.

AFC Pretenders:
1. New England--sorry Patriot fans; last season was a fraud. After you win, you lose the hunger.
2. Miami--they'd be a contender if they had home field throughout but I don't trust them if they have to go into a cold weather site.
3. NY Jets--could maybe argue for them but watching their listless effort vs the Bears makes it hard to make a case for them winning in the playoffs.
4. Indy--Sorry, no more games against Houston. That defense hasn't turned the corner as much as the media thinks it has.

NFC Contenders:
1. Green Bay--only negative is their defense against the run. Home field would obviously help.
2. Philly--they've been awesome but I wonder if they've peaked too soon. How rusty will McNabb be in the playoffs?
3. NY Giants--absolutely; they're peaking right now.

NFC Pretenders:
1. Tampa---Pittsburgh exposed what many of us already suspected: they struggle in matchups vs smashmouth teams. Check out their losses this season and last. Except for NO and Minny last year, all the losses were to power teams.
2. San Fran--just not that sold on them. Garcia and Hearst seemed better last year. Double team Owens and they'll have problems.
3. New Orleans--defense is poor; given up 20 or more in every game.

Not sure how you can consider a team that is not even in the playoffs and is an underdog to win the game thta they need to get in ahead of two division champs. The Giants are a contender?? Sorry I have a hard time buying that one. I won't even get into Green Bay as your strongest team in the nfc.

valuist ..interesting post...i agree with your AFC analysis...but last yr. was not a "fraud" for the pATS...it was what it was... a great run ..by a team "peaking" at the right time..playing hard , team football...and finding ways to win...they are clearly not the same team that went on that run last year...and i dont dispute your classification of them this year

as for your NFC picks...you mention that tampa was exposed by PItt a "smashmouth" football team...they had thier third string QB playing against PITT...and although i may actually agree with your analysis that they struggle against "smashmouth" teams....what teams are "smashmouth" in the NFC??????....EAGLES maybe but other than that?

I agree with him completely Tampa not getting home field is huge and now with Brad Johnson unhealthy I don't see them going very far. The Giants are definately playing very well right now but for them to win three in a row on the road will be awfully tough right now. Smashmouth you have to realize he said contenders. They are playing the best ball right now. Due to injuries and lack of depth the 49ers, and Saints have no shot at all. The Eagles to me are the best team out there right now. The only teams that have a shot to beat them are the Packers and Giants. The only reason the packers have a shot is because of Number 4 and how well he plays in bad weather. An analogy similar to his would be like saying the Lakers are still contenders for the NBA title although they are not in contention right now.

The packers always have a chance with number 4, but another key injury to watch is the status of Gilbert Brown who is listed as probable Sunday. With Brown in the game the packers can stop the run and without him they can't.
