Five-time NHRA season champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. is eager to get back in his Pro Stock hot rod when the drag racing season opens today with the Pro Stock Showdown at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Coughlin will use the 16-car event, which concludes with championship eliminations Saturday, to prepare for the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series opener the following weekend in Pomona, Calif.
"This will actually be the third test of the offseason for the team, but my buddy Richie Stevens filled in for me before, so this will be my first time back in the cockpit since last November,'' he said. ''It definitely gets your blood pumping."
Coughlin, of Dublin, Ohio, drove the Victor Cagnazzi Racing Chevrolet to seven titles last year and a fifth-place finish in points. A four-time Las Vegas NHRA title winner, Coughlin won the 2008 Showdown and was runner-up a year ago to Allen Johnson, who is back to defend his title.
One team not attending will be KB Racing with drivers Greg Anderson and Jason Line. Anderson, who tested for five days last month in Palm Beach, Fla., is regrouping after a Jan. 4 fire nearly destroyed his home in Concord, N.C. Another setback for the team has been the health of team owner Ken Black of Las Vegas, who remains hospitalized after suffering a stroke in early December.
Other weekend action includes Melanie Troxel possibly testing a Nitro Funny Car owned by Roger Burgess and the speedway's new Supreme Sportsman Series for NHRA Sportsman categories.
Racing is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Saturday.
? VETERAN JOINS GAUGHAN -- Rusty Wallace Racing has hired veteran crew chief Brad Parrott as crew chief for Las Vegan Brendan Gaughan's No. 62 Toyota in the NASCAR Nationwide Series.
Parrott's father, Buddy, will be the spotter for Gaughan's team, which finished ninth in points last season.
Gaughan will compete in the Best in the Desert series Parker 425 off-road race Saturday in Arizona before returning to Las Vegas for Super Bowl Sunday to work a betting window at his family's South Point casino.
? KARDASHIAN TO CUP -- Reality TV star Kim Kardashian will sponsor a NASCAR Sprint Cup car in the Feb. 26-28 Shelby American at Las Vegas Motor Speedway to promote a new fragrance available at her Sephora store in the Venetian.
Mike Bliss is expected to drive the No. 36 Chevrolet for Tommy Baldwin Racing..
