I was reading the thread KCWolf started about the cost for an average family to pay for insurance vs the minimum wage salary. Seems hard to ignore, but I'm not shocked people here have no problem with it.

The part that really got me thinking was Chadman's post. I think he started going down a path I haven't heard anyone else talk about, then veered off. Here's the question I have:

What impact would a single payer system have on the economy?

As KCWolf pointed out, insurance costs a nice chunk of money, and our employers are footing a part of it. What if they didn't have to pay that any more? Wouldn't that make companies more profitable? Wouldn't it drive cost to produce down and then prices down?

One more thought on universal health care: Can't we have a way for people that want to upgrade their coverage pay extra for "special treatment"? A lot of the rich are worried that they will get the same care as a Welfare mom...can't we offer a way to get better care?

Sometimes I have a thought on certain issues and I have to ask myself is this crazy or am I losing my mind, for instance on the rich and their health care, I think that like anything else in this country if you have the money you can get it, a back door policy or lets say the black market. You can buy anything on the black market then why can't you buy health care.
Want they be a medical solution for the rich, super rich... a new version of medical care with a new name to enhance the life of the very wealthy, just change the name and go into a private business, it would be like joining a private country club, the insurance companies would love to sell a membership or policy to the rich at a 30 % profit margin.
Send the poor to the clinics and ration their care and of course delay their care as long as possible... maybe the really sick people will die while waiting for their health care. How do we pay for this incompetent health care, tax the middle class, wait a minute, there is no middle class, tax everyone that will pay, and of course give the super rich another tax break... trickle down economics... this is why we are in such great shape has a nation.
The top 1% have more wealth than the bottom 95% of the people.... something is wrong.
SLAVERY, the day of making a good living for a working man is in its last days, don't you think ?

I hear you HT. Why can't it be set up like mail. You can pay a little bit (taxes instead of stamps) and get USPS service, or you can pay extra and get FedEx or UPS service. Seems logical enough....maybe that is the problem.

Garry If they are making minimum wage they are below poverty and eligible for free healthcare. If they are 400% above poverty--making 80,000 in NY they are eligible for free healthcare for children.

On side note remember our debate on minimum wage and I remaked it would kill jobs for youth-

The unemployment rate for young Americans has exploded to 52.2 percent ? a post-World War II high, according to the Labor Dept. ? meaning millions of Americans are staring at the likelihood that their lifetime earning potential will be diminished and, combined with the predicted slow economic recovery, their transition into productive members of society could be put on hold for an extended period of time. . .
