Madcap Escapade tops Triple Crown late nominations
Undefeated filly MADCAP ESCAPADE (Hennessy), who is scheduled to run in Saturday's $500,000 Ashland S. (G1) at Keeneland, tops a list of 15 late nominations to the 2004 Triple Crown. She joins nine other fillies, most notably Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) winner and Eclipse champion HALFBRIDLED (Unbridled), who are nominated to the Triple Crown.
The 15 new prospects, which include two recent graded stakes winners, became eligible for the three-race series by paying a late-nomination fee of $6,000. They bring the total number of three-year-olds nominated to 449, third largest since the birth of Triple Crown Productions in 1986. The newcomers join the 434 nominees that were signed up for $600 each during the early nomination period that closed January 17.
Representing the Louisville-based team of owner Bruce Lunsford and trainer Frank Brothers, Madcap Escapade rolled to a 4 3/4-length victory in the Forward Gal S. (G2) at Gulfstream Park in her most recent start on March 13. The bay filly has yet to be tested in three starts, winning her first two starts by a combined 21 3/4 lengths. To date, she has earned $169,200.
Brothers is also the trainer of another late nominee, QUIET HERO (Quiet American).
SINISTER G (Matty G), winner of the March 20 Lane's End S. (G2) at Turfway Park, and KILGOWAN (Smoke Glacken), winner of the March 13 El Camino Real Derby (G3) at Golden Gate, are among the late nominees.
Trainer Niall O'Callaghan has three late nominations: ASCERTAIN (Ire) (Intikhab), fifth in Saturday's UAE Derby (UAE-G2); GAMBLIN (Family Calling), third in the Rushaway S. on the Lane's End undercard; and CALL ME SHANE (Tale of the Cat).
The other late nominees are: SONG OF THE SWORD (Unbridled's Song), who is scheduled to run in Saturday's $500,000 Illinois Derby (G2); MUSTANFAR (Unbridled), runner-up in the Tampa Bay Derby (G3); KAUFY MATE (Diligence), winner of the Sam F. Davis S. at Tampa Bay Downs; LITTLE MATTH MAN (Matty G), third in the Lane's End; HUMOROUSLY (Distorted Humor), winner of the OBS Championship S.; PURE AMERICAN (Quiet American), an impressive allowance winner at Oaklawn Park; MONOCULAR (Distant View); and TRIESTE'S HONOR (Old Trieste).
