So while the capitalist world is busy curing erectile dysfunction and sleep and anxiety disorders that it has helped create, a socialist country just ended mother-to-baby HIV transmission. Oh yeah, and they have a lung cancer vaccine.

The World Health Organisation has confirmed that Cuba has become the first country in the world to effectively eliminate mother-to-baby transmission of HIV and syphilis.

"[This is] one of the greatest public health achievements possible," WHO director general, Margaret Chan, told the press. And the best part is that it was brought about by relatively simple strategies: namely, better testing and treatment of expectant parents, and providing HIV- and syphilis-positive mothers with options to protect their babies, such as bottle-feeding and C-sections.

What Cuba has done differently is integrate these treatments into accessible and affordable universal healthcare, so that they've become a normal part of treatment for all pregnant women.

"This is a major victory in our long fight against HIV and sexually transmitted infections, and an important step towards having an AIDS-free generation," said Chan. "It shows that ending the AIDS epidemic is possible."

Around the world each year, an estimated 1.4 million HIV-positive women become pregnant. Without any intervention, they have a 15 to 45 percent chance of passing the virus onto their children while they're in the womb, as well as during labour, delivery and breastfeeding. But that risk drops to just 1 percent if both mother and child receive antiretrovirals.

The rate of syphilis isn't far behind, with around 1 million expecting mothers worldwide each year infected. Similarly, the risk of transmission is greatly reduced by treating the mother with penicillin during pregnancy.

In fact, the hard part about stopping mothers from passing the diseases on has simply been giving women access to these treatments, which Cuba has now done.

WHO counts a country as having eliminated mother-to-baby transmissions when the rate of children born with HIV or syphilis is so low that it "no longer constitutes a public health problem".

Basically that means a country needs to have less than 50 cases of HIV and syphilis per 100,000 live births, maintained for at least a year, as well as at least 95 percent of pregnant women being tested for the diseases, and 95 percent of those who test positive receiving proper treatment.

WHO reports that Cuba has now met those targets, with only two babies being born with HIV in 2013, and five with congenital syphilis.

But it's not the only country making big improvements in this area, and Chan now expects others to follow Cuba's lead and seek validation that they've ended mother-to-baby transmission. Worldwide, childhood infection rates are quickly dropping, with just 240,000 children born with HIV in 2014 - nearly half the 2009 amount.

Still, we have a long way to go before WHO reaches its global target of just 40,000 new child infections per year, and Cuba has shown that better healthcare can help get us there.

"Cuba?s success demonstrates that universal access and universal health coverage are feasible and indeed are the key to success, even against challenges as daunting as HIV," said Carissa Etienne, director of the Pan American Health Organisation. "Cuba?s achievement today provides inspiration for other countries to advance towards elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV and syphilis."

Peace! :)

oh fer chrissakes...why didn`t danny Williams go to cuba for his heart surgery(or stay in Canada for that matter)?...why doesn`t the Saudi king have his check-ups in Havana?....why didn`t the Italian prime minister have his heart surgery in cuba?...why are middle class Canadians coming here and not going to cuba?....it`s a two tiered system in which the rich elite(and maybe a few south American dictators) get the best treatment

it is cheaper(the average joe may not be able to get antibiotics or aspirin but who cares?).....Canadians can travel to cuba.....why aren`t they going there for medical treatment?.....why aren`t you?

because "most" candians aren`t crazy.....

What surprised me is when Hugo Chavez, former dictator of Venezuela got sick with cancer he went to, of all places, Cuba for surgery and medical treatment. He lived about 7 years longer than expected as the result. They must have some really good doctors in that commie state.

I didn`t post that as a shot at you.......I honestly thought that chavez was sick longer than 22 months myself....

time flies.............

I have relatives in Colombia and Venezuela. Trust me, he was sick with cancer long before that. If you watch his speeches you can see him looking worse with each one. He supposedly went to Cuba secretly for treatment, too.

things are kind of rough in Venezuela at the moment...they were helping the castros but from what I`ve read, the gravy train is not what it was(oil prices)....

can`t be easy for the relatives(unless they`re very well off).....

I'm not quite certain why such a hate-on or derision towards Cuba, Cuban doctors and the entire Cuban health care system, but whatevs. You keep doing you, democracy!

The point is, the last time I checked, eliminating HIV transmission from mother to child is a super positive thing that all of humanity should celebrate, as recognized by the WHO. As is developing a vaccine for lung cancer. Period.

Peace! :)

because it`s a hellhole for the actual people........last time I checked the official average monthly salary was around $20 per month.....most have a lousy quality of living that is totally controlled by castro and his regime...the people have what the castros allow them to have...and that`s not changing until the castros are purged from the country...all this crap about their life expectancy and infant mortality rate.....you really think that honest statistics are coming out of a totally state run society?

do you see people surging to cuba so they and their families can live a better life?...

My mother was born on Cuba and lived there until she was 8. Last time my dad traveled to Cuba for business, he had a cabbie drive him to her family home. It was once stately, now it is a wreck and inhabited by at least 6 familes. You wanna know how bad it is, tip a cabbie $20 and they start to cry.

One of my mom's childhood friends is a doctor in Cuba until she and husband defected earlier this year. She lived better than the masses, and was even on facebook from cuba, which I find difficult to comprehend. Still, the quality of life is not remotely close to a 1st world standard. Surprisingly, they are big into education. It is not unheard of for a Cuban child to speak 3-4 languages fluently. My tour guide last time I was in France was a defector who spoke 6 languages. Sharp and educated guy. Served as diplomat in Cuba and defected during a trip overseas.

That said, I hope the world is able to benefit from the advances the Cuban medicine has recently developed.

But can't you see that you're absolutely conflating two separate issues that have absolutely nothing to do with one another? The fact that some/many people live in abject poverty should NOT automatically dismiss the accomplishments or advancements in medicine by their doctors. And I would like to think that the World Health Organization knows what they're doing or talking about. After all, they're charged with monitoring these things worldwide. They help people worldwide. If they're not to be trusted with these findings, then who is? It's not like Castro or the Cuban media that is extolling these virtues and making these claims, but the motherloving WHO!!!

And to address your point regarding the flow of citizens, it appears that the outflow is extreme when compared to the influx of newcomers. This is to be expected for most developing nations. Most Cubans target the US for immigration, but Spain, Italy, Puerto Rico and Mexico are also destinations.

However, the fact that SOME people are moving to the country should not be discounted, however small the number is. The fact that Spanish and Russian immigrants dominate those moving to Cuba is quite interesting. I assumed that Haiti, which ranks 3rd, would have the largest number of immigrants to the country.

Nevertheless, unless convinced otherwise, I do believe that the WHO is legit. As are their proclamations when it comes to the medical field. So again, YAY Cuba for eliminating the transfer of HIV from mother to child, and for developing a vaccine to combat lung cancer!

Peace! :)

i`m skeptical of any claims until proven(and no,i don`t trust the who...see below)

"North Korea?s health system would be the envy of many developing countries because of the abundance of medical staff that it has available, the head of the World Health Organization said on Friday."

"WHO Director-General Margaret Chan, speaking a day after returning from a ? visit to the reclusive country, said malnutrition was a problem in North Korea but she had not seen any obvious signs of it in the capital Pyongyang."

of course SHE DIDN`T...lol

"North Korea?which does not allow its citizens to leave the country?has no shortage of doctors and nurses, in contrast to other developing countries where skilled healthcare workers often emigrate, she said."

really?.....

I'm pretty sure it`s established fact that people starve to death in n korea....north korea IS hell...

i`ll believe all the claims when they are shown to be proven....

the opening of relations with cuba has me conflicted....people are saying that the people and economy will be helped...i guess it`s possible but I'm skeptical......i think it throws a lifeline to the castros when they are proving extremely vulnerable...Russia abandoned them...and their most recent sugar daddy Venezuela is having their own issue with oil prices....may have been a primo time to get rid of the castros...

yes, there will be walmarts and mcdonalds` built and that will employ some Cubans that surely need the work...but the money will go through the castros...anybody that thinks that working Cubans will get paid anything more than what the castros allow them to be paid is fooling themselves...this will prop up and extend the castro regime.....

some large American corporations will probably make serious bank..rich folks(hollywood celebs and the rich in general)will have a new playground....but i haven`t read any information regarding the reimbursement of the billions that were stolen from americans and expats when the castro coup took place(confiscated from good people like cie`s relatives)........we didn`t embargo castro because of Russian missiles or the fact that they were communists....we embargoed the Cuban regime because they stole from americans and the good people of cuba...

we`ll see..we`re all hoping for the best.....i`m still very skeptical of any information coming out of dictatorships...
