Two days after his skull was fractured by a foul ball that struck him during his first Cubs game, 7-year-old Dominic DiAngi was out of the intensive care unit Saturday and ?spending a lot more time with his eyes open than closed,? his father said.

The Frankfort boy has been hospitalized at Children?s Memorial Hospital since he was hit in the head by a foul ball off the bat of Cubs pitcher Ted Lilly on Thursday.

On Saturday evening, Lilly and first baseman Derrek Lee stopped by Dominic?s hospital room for a 20-minute visit, and they brought him a Cubs jersey.

?I saw him. It was great,? Lilly said as he and Lee left the hospital.

Dominic was moved out of intensive care to a regular room Saturday, and he watched one of his favorite movies, the baseball-themed film The Sandlot.

?Today has been a great day,? his father, Peter DiAngi said. ?He's off the breathing machine, off the morphine and off most of the medication. Now, he's just trying to get some rest.?

Dr. Tord Alden, a pediatric neurosurgeon at Children?s, said the swelling in Dominic?s brain ?is improving and does not appear to be getting worse.?

Dominic could be released from the hospital early next week.

It wouldn?t be soon enough for his family.

?We?re looking forward to him smiling and talking to us,? Peter DiAngi said. ?We?re looking forward to having our boy home.?

The Cubs kept in touch with Dominic and his family throughout the day Friday and again on Saturday.

The team sent Dominic a baseball signed by the whole team, a signed glove and jersey from shortstop Ryan Theriot and a bat from second baseman Mark DeRosa. Dominic also requested a copy of the audio of WGN radio broadcasters Pat Hughes and Ron Santo wishing him well during Friday?s broadcast of the Cubs-San Francisco Giants game.

?I think it?s great they did that and that they?re worrying about Dominic,? Peter DiAngi said. ?It means a lot.?
