Cubs Agree to Terms with Garciaparra

10 minutes ago Sports - Reuters

CHICAGO (Sports Network) - The Chicago Cubs (news) Tuesday agreed to a contract with shortstop Nomar Garciaparra (news). As per team policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Garciaparra, who filed for free agency just after the season ended, came to the Windy City after being acquired from Boston in a four-team deal just prior to the trading deadline.

The 31-year-old appeared in 43 games with the Cubs this season and batted .297 with four homers and 20 RBI.

Garciaparra began his career after being selected by the Red Sox in the first round of the 1994 draft. Prior to his acquisition by the Cubs, he had spent eight-plus seasons with Boston.

He has played in the postseason in both the Division Series (1998, 1999 and 2003) and League Championship Series (1999 and 2003) for Boston - and set an ALDS record in 1998 with 11 RBI in four games.

The five-time American League All-Star has hit .322 with 293 doubles, 182 homers and 710 RBI in 1,009 major league contests.

Garciaparra has also hit .300 or better in seven seasons and had a career-best 30-game hitting streak in 1997.
