CLEMSON VS CAL STATE FULLERTON

Clemson will serve as the home team against Cal State Fullerton in the 4 p.m. CT start. The Tigers will go with righthander Jason Berken (9-3, 2.90). He left his super-regional start with a concussion after a collision while covering first base.

Fullerton will go with righthander Lauren Gagnier (14-5, 2.52), who was the losing pitcher after working 2 2/3 innings (43 pitches) in Friday's 13-inning loss to North Carolina. Gagnier battled food poisoning Sunday, but his arm was fine. He'll seek win No. 15, which would give him sole possesion of the national lead. He and Texas Christian's Jake Arrieta are tied with 14 wins.

Tuesday morning update:
Horton hopes to be able to start right-hander Lauren Gagnier in Tuesday's game, but the junior has been bothered by a case of food poisoning in recent days. If he can't go, the Titans will come back with righty Wes Roemer, who went eight innings against the Tar Heels on Friday.

MIAMI VS OREGON ST

Miami will play as the home team in a rematch against Oregon State in the late game, which should begin near 8:30 CT. The Beavers hope for a better start from righthander Mike Stutes (7-2, 2.88) than what they got out of Dallas Buck in an 11-1 loss to Miami in their CWS opener. Miami was still debating between lefthander Manny Miguelez (8-4, 4.31) and righthander Carlos Gutierrez (9-6, 4.08), whom Miami coach Jim Morris called his secret weapon.

Gutierrez hasn't pitched since May 19, and it was originally thought he would need Tommy John surgery and miss the rest of the year. It turned out he has a less serious arm injury, and he's been throwing the last two weeks in preparation for a possible postseason start. He'll still require a medical procedure

Overall game thoughts

Overall game thoughts

Berken is Clemson's #3 starter. When looking at his recent appearances, it would give rise for concern. However, each of the short outings was with reason. KCWolf already mentioned the concussion in the S. Regionals. In the Regionals, he didn't come back after a long rain delay.

Cal State may have a slight edge in starting pitching, but I think this game (as they often do in elimination games) will be a pitching by committee effort. If that is the case, Clemson gets the edge as they have a better bullpen. I know Fullerton may resort to other starters out of the pen if need be, but the fact Roemer and Miller pitched recently leads me to believe they won't be as sharp as usual.

As for the bats, Fullerton is really good at the small ball/sacrifice game. Clemson has slightly more pop/power in their lineup while still having a really speedy line-up.

I think it will be a close contest. I see Clemson's pitching keeping Fullerton down with only a few runs and the Clemson bats being able to take advantage of any Fullerton pitching mistakes.

I am taking Clemson at +145. Note that this line opened with them at -130. Big swing here and I'm not sure why, but I'll be happy to go against the Public on this one.

Good luck no matter what you play.

Poon,

I agree with you. I'm confident one of the dogs will cash today. I don't think it's going to be Miami. Oregon State -175 says a lot! The Beavers lost 11-1 to Miami a couple of days ago, and they are laying heavy chalk? Not to mention, the public will bet on Miami over Oregon State more times than not. Miami's program is far more sexy than Oregon State's. Like we said yesterday, this is a young Miami team. I think the Canes left it all out on the field last night against Rice. Give me Clemson and Oregon State today. Best of luck fellas!

KCWolf, hope you don't think i was trying to hijack your thread. Just not too many that follow college ball so I figure just to put it in your thread as opposed to starting another.

Wise, I agree with you on Miami. I'm going to have a quick write up on that game later as well. I'm waiting to place my bet on OSU hoping that the public beats the line down a bit. Last night the Rice line dived right at the end.

Good to see Clemson answer back with 3 of their own and then hold in the top of the 2nd. Hopefully they will continue their offense in the bottom of the inning

For Gutierrez, see above blurb in KCWolf?s post. My personal opinion is that Miguelez will get the nod tonight. I think Gutierrez would start against Rice if Miami stays alive. Just my opinion though.

Wise, it is true Stutes hasn't pitched a lot recently. For that fact Miguelez hasn't had a lot of work either. I typically don't bet O/U in college ball, but do admit this one looks tempting. Besides for the pitchers, Miami really isn't an offensive juggernaut and their scoring so far in the tourney is definitely on the high side.

That being said, I'm still not sold. I'm going to weigh it though and may make a small play.

Night Game

Night Game

As you can tell from the recent appearances by Stutes and Miguelez, both have had up and down starts. If either gets in trouble early, the coaches will be headed to the pen like in the first game. Both teams want to move on at whatever cost. That being said, I still believe Stutes and the OSU pen give them a strong advantage. Gunderson could go 2+ for OSU if needed.

If you have seen any of Miami?s games, you know what they are about offensively. Hustle, hustle and more hustle. The don?t kill you all game long, but when you make a mistake, they pile it on in that inning. The aren?t overly impressive, but I feel they have a slight advantage over OSU offensively.

OSU has the revenge factor going. Miami wants to get the W to get another shot at Rice. Looks to be another good one in a CWS that has already provided a lot of excitement.

I?m going to go with OSU with a small play. It?s been said numerous times that pitching gets you wins in Omaha, and this game should be another example.

I?m waiting to place the bet to see if the line moves anymore. Lot of the public is on Miami. Currently OSU is at -156.
