Poor Dan--maybe next time he can do a little fact finding before he submits his opinion.

"Rather, the former anchorman of the "CBS Evening News," is seeking $20 million in compensatory damages and $50 million in punitive damages.

CBS spokesman Dana McClintock said: "These complaints are old news, and this lawsuit is without merit."

Rather narrated the September 2004 report that claimed President Bush skirted some of his duties during his National Guard service and that a commander felt pressured to sugarcoat Bush's record. Rather maintains the story was true.

But an independent review for the network determined the story was neither fair nor accurate. CBS fired three news executives and a producer for airing it."

its interesting, if this was not a high profile person, i.e. bush, would rather have been fired ... after all those years tossed for a gaffe ... i dont think many of believe bush actually didnt shirk a lot of his military career ... just read for ten mins online and it pops up over and over ... he has missing months and gaps that crop up continuously from many sources ... always thought it was a lil fishy network would dump rather ... i mean, when hasnt bush and his cronies lied ... wmd, cheney i wasnt in the bunker until 10 a.m. when mineta saw him at 9;20, the missing of 2.3 trillion dollar pentagon announced 9/10/01--great timing, the swift boat jab, etc

This is indeed old news, and I am not going to bother to post the numerous sources that have investigated this, but here is one from the Boston Globe investigation:

"A detailed Globe examination of the records in 2000 unearthed official reports by Bush's Guard commanders that they had not seen him for a year. There was also no evidence that Bush had done part of his Guard service in Alabama, as he has claimed. Bush's Guard appointment, made possible by family connections, was cut short when Bush was allowed to leave his Houston Guard unit eight months early"

Rather should have verified the documents that he presented, clearly, but his accusations were accurate.
